Chrome can produce a screenshot that seems the wrong size for two different reasons: it captured a different portion of the page than you intended, or the saved image’s pixel dimensions differ from the page’s CSS-pixel viewport. Those are separate issues. The right fix depends on how you captured the page and on the image’s actual dimensions; the available documentation does not establish a single Mac-specific bug as the general cause.
First identify what “wrong size” means
Check whether the problem is the screenshot’s extent or its scale and pixel dimensions:

- Wrong extent: the image is too short or narrow because it shows only the visible browser area when you wanted the whole page, or captures more than you wanted.
- Unexpected dimensions or scale: the saved bitmap has different pixel dimensions from the viewport you expected, or content appears larger or smaller than expected.
Before changing settings, note the expected and actual image width × height. Also establish whether you used an ordinary screen capture, Chrome DevTools’ Capture screenshot, Capture a full size screenshot, or a script controlling Chrome. Each path can produce a different result.

A viewport screenshot captures what is currently visible in the browser viewport. A full-size page screenshot includes content beyond that visible area. If a screenshot is unexpectedly short, check the capture mode before adjusting display or zoom settings. In DevTools, choose the viewport capture for the current view or the full-size capture for the entire page.

A full-page image can be much taller than the browser window by design. It is not evidence by itself that Chrome has enlarged the page or that your Mac’s display scaling is wrong.
CSS pixels, device pixels, and Retina displays
Chrome defines device pixel ratio (DPR) as “the ratio between physical pixels on the hardware screen and logical (CSS) pixels.” A page’s CSS viewport dimensions and a screenshot’s raster dimensions therefore measure different things. The bitmap need not have the same width and height in pixels as the CSS viewport.

Do not assume every Retina Mac doubles screenshot dimensions. DPR depends on the device and capture setup. Compare the CSS viewport, the screenshot bitmap, and the full document dimensions separately; that helps distinguish a pixel-density difference from a capture-area mismatch.

- Viewport width and height: confirm the emulated dimensions match what you intended.
- Device type: verify the selected type is appropriate for the page you are testing.
- DPR: check the device pixel ratio used for emulation.
- Viewport zoom: distinguish the zoom used to fit the emulated viewport inside DevTools from the emulated viewport’s own dimensions.
These settings can affect the emulated page or how it is displayed inside DevTools. The apparent size of the preview is not necessarily the CSS viewport size or the final bitmap size.
Check scripted captures for dimension overrides
If a script controls Chrome through the Chrome DevTools Protocol, inspect both the device metrics and screenshot settings. A device-metrics override can set width, height, and device scale factor; screenshot capture can also specify a viewport. A mismatch in those configured values can produce a result different from the page size you expected.

- Whole-document dimensions if you intended a full-page capture.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Record the capture path. Note whether you used an ordinary Chrome screen capture, DevTools’ Capture screenshot, DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot, or an automated protocol capture.
- Describe the mismatch precisely. Is the image too tall or wide, does the content look scaled, or are the saved pixel dimensions unexpected? Write down the intended and actual width × height.
- Choose the intended capture extent. Use a viewport capture for only the visible browser area and a full-size capture when you need content beyond it.
- For Device Mode, verify the emulation. Check width, height, device type, DPR, and the viewport zoom used to fit the preview.
- For automation, inspect overrides. Review configured device-metrics width, height, and device scale factor, along with the screenshot viewport and scale values.
- Compare the three dimensions separately. Check CSS viewport size, bitmap size, and full-document size to determine whether the mismatch is about extent, pixel density, or an emulated override.
If the mismatch persists
To narrow down an unresolved case, collect the Chrome version, macOS version, macOS display scaling setting, exact capture steps, and a sample image’s pixel dimensions. Those details make it possible to distinguish a capture-mode difference from a device or automation setting. Without them, the cause on an individual Mac cannot be determined from the symptom alone.
