First check that the intended page is visible, then compare an ordinary viewport screenshot with Chrome DevTools’ “Capture full size screenshot.” There is no verified Windows-specific cause or universal fix in the available reports; the comparison helps narrow down where to investigate.
First, check whether the page or the capture is blank
- Navigate to the intended URL and confirm that page content is visible in Chrome. Check the address bar too: if it says
about:blankinstead of the expected address, the page may not have reached the state you intended to capture. - Take an ordinary screenshot of the visible browser viewport.
- In DevTools, open the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P, search for “Capture full size screenshot,” and run it. A Chrome Community post describes this command as downloading a PNG; that post is a user description, not official current documentation. Chrome Community: full-page DevTools screenshots.
- Compare the two results. If both are blank, investigate whether the page loaded and rendered. If the viewport image works but the full-page image is blank, note that distinction and the page dimensions; the reports available do not establish a specific cause for this pattern.
This is a diagnostic sequence, not a guaranteed repair. A blank image alone cannot distinguish a page-state problem from a capture problem.

What the reported cases do—and do not—show
An automation report involving about:blank
A January 2026 issue in the Chrome DevTools MCP project described blank screenshots when automation appeared to navigate but the inspected page remained about:blank with an empty body. The reporter used Fedora Linux, Chrome DevTools MCP v0.13.0, and Chrome 144.0.7559.96; they also reported that manual Chrome headless screenshots worked. This is an example of why checking the actual page state matters, not evidence of a Windows DevTools bug or a desktop Chrome fix. Issue #832.

A historical large-image capture issue
A Chromium protocol issue opened in 2020 described corrupted or repeated output for screenshots larger than 8192 pixels and is marked fixed. It concerns historical large-image corruption, not a wholly blank Windows screenshot or a current general Chrome size limit. The report lists Linux. Chromium issue: large screenshots.

Other reports are not explanations for this symptom
A 2026 Chromium report concerned washed-out colors while capturing on macOS; testers said they could not reproduce it, and the issue was later marked obsolete. It does not explain a blank image on Windows. Chromium issue: capture in Inspect mode.
An older Chrome Community report describes a full-size screenshot that became narrower than expected, but does not verify a cause or remedy. A changed width is not evidence of the cause of a blank image. Chrome Community: full-size screenshot width report.

Isolate the failure and prepare a useful report
- Repeat the viewport and full-size captures on a simple, ordinary webpage as well as the affected page. If only one page reproduces the problem, record that as a clue—not proof that the site is at fault.
- Write down whether the page visibly rendered, whether the address was the expected URL, which capture method you used, and which capture produced a blank image.
- Record the page dimensions along with your Chrome and Windows versions. If you can, include the affected URL or a minimal page that reproduces the problem.
- If the failure is repeatable, report it through Chrome’s feedback/reporting route with those details. The available reports do not identify a matching Windows bug to cite as the known cause.
What to use if you need an image immediately
Windows’ built-in screenshot tools, such as Print Screen, can capture an ordinary visible-screen image, but a Chrome Community post mentioning them does not establish that they capture an entire scrolling webpage. They are not necessarily substitutes for a full-document browser capture. Chrome Community: screenshot discussion.
