That reaction is personal, not proof that wheel navigation is faster or better. The change is easiest to understand as a different way to reach apps through an Android launcher.
What changed when I replaced the grid
An Android launcher provides the phone’s home interface and organizes access to apps. As Microsoft Support puts it, “Every Android device comes pre-programmed with a default launcher, but you can also download third party launchers, like Microsoft Launcher.” A third-party launcher changes the home-screen software and navigation arrangement; it does not replace the apps themselves. In a conventional grid, apps occupy positions in rows and columns. You tend to find one by remembering where it sits, scanning its icon, or searching. A wheel instead puts some apps around a circular control, which can make the act of choosing feel more like moving through a set of directions than scanning a page. The difference is in the navigation model—not necessarily in how the phone handles the apps after you open them.

A wheel does not always replace every grid
“Spinning wheel” can describe a launcher’s favorite-app control rather than its entire app drawer. Glide Launcher describes a radial app wheel alongside an alphabet bar and edge bars. Glide Launcher’s feature page is one example of a design that combines ways to navigate.

Phi Launcher describes a radial wheel for favorites while its app drawer can use grid, list, pager, or tile styles. In other words, a wheel and a grid can coexist: the wheel can serve as a shortcut to selected apps while the full collection remains available in another format. Phi Launcher’s site describes those options.
By contrast, the Google Play listing for Grid – Windows Phone launcher describes an endless vertical tile grid, with widgets, folders, app search, and layout backup and restore. That illustrates how a spatial layout can do more than place app icons: it may also organize information and provide tools for managing the home screen. Why the old layout can feel wrong afterward
A grid trains you to associate apps with locations: top row, lower corner, or a folder you recognize. A wheel changes the visual cues and the movement used to reach favorites. Once a different arrangement becomes familiar, the old grid may seem oddly rigid or less natural—not because it has objectively become worse, but because your expectations have shifted.
That feeling is the part a product feature list cannot explain. Whether a wheel suits you depends on what changed in your own use: which apps you put within reach, whether you rely on folders or widgets, and how you remember where things are. There is no comparative usability result here that establishes one approach as faster or easier for everyone.

What to check before trying a wheel
- What does the wheel cover? Check whether it opens all apps or only favorites, and how you reach the rest.
- How else can you find an app? An alphabet index or search can complement a wheel; a grid may depend more on remembered placement.
- What happens to widgets and folders? If your current screen is also an information dashboard or a filing system, confirm that the alternative supports the parts you use.
- Can you preserve or restore the arrangement? Backup and restore can matter if you invest time in organizing a layout. Feature availability depends on the launcher; for example, Grid’s listing describes layout backup and restore.
- Give the new arrangement time. The first few interactions measure unfamiliarity as much as fit. Notice whether app-finding becomes more comfortable as you learn the controls.
The useful takeaway is personal
A spinning wheel is a real alternative navigation pattern, but it need not mean abandoning every grid, folder, or search tool. The worthwhile question is whether the launcher’s mix of favorites, app drawer, and organization matches the way you look for apps. My sense that the old layout feels wrong is a report about adaptation and preference—not a universal verdict on Android home screens.
