A screenshot API can return an old-looking page for three different reasons: it may be serving a stored screenshot, it may capture the page before JavaScript displays the update, or the website itself may still be delivering old content. Check those layers in that order. The right fix depends on which one is happening—and cache controls are specific to each provider.
First identify what the API actually returned
Start by saving the exact request and response: request URL and parameters, HTTP status, response headers, and the image or PDF URL. Compare them with a request that produced a fresh result, including capture options and any cache-related settings.

Some services return a stored image or a URL for cached output rather than initiating a new browser render. A stored-image URL may continue serving the same capture; for example, ScreenshotOne says fetching its cache URL does not trigger a new render. In that case, make a new API request after the cache expires or use the provider’s documented regeneration control. ScreenshotOne’s caching documentation explains its cache behavior.

Find the cache controls in the documentation for the API you are calling. Providers use different parameter names and rules: ScreenshotAPI.net documents fresh=true to bypass its stored screenshot; Screenshot API documents cache, cacheTTL and staleTTL; ScreenshotOne describes TTL-based caching and cache keys tied to request options. Do not assume one provider’s parameter works with another. See the relevant docs for ScreenshotAPI.net, Screenshot API and ScreenshotOne.

If your provider exposes cache-key settings, check that the new request actually differs in the option that matters. A changed target URL or capture option may affect the key, but do not rely on adding a random query string unless the provider documents that behavior. A cache bypass should be verified by checking the response and comparing the resulting capture, not inferred from the parameter you sent.
Wait for the updated page state
A browser reaching its navigation-complete condition does not guarantee that the visible content has updated. JavaScript-heavy sites and single-page applications can populate or replace content after the initial document loads. Cloudflare’s Browser Run documentation warns that default page-load behavior can return empty or incomplete results on such pages. Cloudflare documents selector and network-idle waits; its HTML and screenshot API reference also describes page-loading controls.
Prefer a selector that represents the update
If the new text, image, or component has a stable CSS selector, wait for that selector rather than guessing how many seconds the site needs. Screenshot API documents waitForSelector and waitUntil; ScreenshotAPI documents waitForSelector and delay controls. Check the exact accepted values and syntax in your provider’s current documentation: Screenshot API and ScreenshotAPI.

Use network idle when it fits the page
A network-idle condition can help when the page’s update depends on requests completing. It is not a universal guarantee: pages with ongoing background traffic may never become idle, and a quiet network does not prove that the right content is visible. Where possible, use a meaningful selector; otherwise choose the provider’s documented network-idle setting and verify the captured state.
Treat fixed delays as a fallback
A delay can help when you know a page needs extra time, but it is a blunt instrument. Too short still captures the old state; too long adds latency and may not fix a stalled script or failed request. Use a delay only after identifying a timing issue, and prefer a selector or suitable load condition when available.
Check whether the website itself is serving stale content
Request the target page directly and compare its HTML and relevant assets with the screenshot result. If the page is already old outside the screenshot workflow, investigate the site’s deployment, origin, or CDN rather than changing the renderer’s cache settings. If direct delivery is fresh but a verified new render is old, return to the screenshot provider’s cache key, cache URL, wait condition, and rendering options.

For a fair comparison, match conditions that can change what the site sends: cookies, authentication, user agent, locale, and geography. Browser HTTP caching is another separate layer; MDN documents how the Fetch API’s Request.cache mode controls browser cache interaction, but that setting is not automatically a control for a screenshot provider’s own stored-image cache. MDN: Request.cache.

- Record the exact request and determine whether the response is a new capture or a stored-image URL.
- Use the screenshot service’s documented cache bypass or fresh-render control; check its TTL and cache-key rules.
- Wait for a selector representing the new state, or use an appropriate network-idle condition. Add a delay only if needed.
- Compare direct site delivery with the rendered result under equivalent request conditions.
Changing one variable per retest makes it easier to tell whether the issue was screenshot caching, page timing, or upstream site delivery.

| What you observe | Likely layer to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The response points to the same image URL as before. | Stored screenshot or cache URL. | Send a new capture request or use the provider’s documented bypass; fetching a stored URL may not render again. |
| The screenshot has the old layout or text, but a later browser view is current. | JavaScript update happened after the renderer’s wait condition. | Wait for the updated content selector, then test a suitable network-idle condition if necessary. |
| A fresh API request still shows old content, and a direct request does too. | Website delivery, CDN, deployment, or origin. | Compare the returned document and assets; investigate the site’s delivery path. |
| Direct delivery is current, but a confirmed new render is old. | Provider cache key, capture options, or renderer timing. | Verify the bypass and key settings, then adjust the page-ready condition. |
| A delay does not help or the request stalls. | The page may not finish its requests, or the expected content may never load. | Wait for a specific selector where possible; inspect page delivery and provider status rather than continually increasing the delay. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does adding a random query parameter always force a new screenshot?
No. A provider may ignore it, normalize the URL, or use a different cache key. Use the cache-bypass behavior documented for that API.

Is a screenshot cache the same as my browser’s HTTP cache?
No. A screenshot service’s stored image, the rendering browser’s HTTP cache, and the target site’s CDN or origin are separate layers.
Which wait condition is best for a single-page app?
When possible, wait for the selector that identifies the updated content. Network idle can help when the update depends on requests finishing, but it may not suit pages with continuous background traffic.
