A matte screen can look grainy because its anti-glare finish scatters light. The texture diffuses reflections from the room, but it can also scatter light coming from the display, creating a hazy or sparkling appearance. You can clean away dust and smudges, but cleaning cannot remove grain caused by an intact finish.
Why a matte screen can look grainy
Anti-glare surfaces are designed to spread reflected light instead of returning it as a sharp, mirror-like image. That same scattering can affect light from the screen itself. TES explains that sparkle can occur when an anti-glare treatment is inhomogeneous and interacts with the display’s red, green, and blue pixel light. A 2012 Society for Information Display article describes sparkle as a possible side effect of anti-glare layers and the design challenge of balancing glare reduction with light transmission and image clarity.

This does not mean every grainy screen has a defective coating. The effect depends on the display and its finish; “matte” alone does not tell you how textured a particular screen will look. For example, TCL specifies 25% haze for its Q8 and U8 matte monitors, a figure that applies to those models—not to matte screens generally. TCL’s model-specific explanation illustrates why it is worth checking the exact display’s specifications.
How to tell whether it is dirt or the finish
Dust, fingerprints, and smudges sit on the surface and may be removable. Grain or sparkle that remains across the screen after approved cleaning may be part of the optical finish. Cleaning is a reasonable first check, not a way to change the coating.

- Check the manual or support page for cleaning instructions for your exact display model.
- Use only the recommended method. ASUS cautions against alcohol- and ammonia-based cleaners because they can damage coatings; its cleaning guidance is an example, not a substitute for another maker’s instructions.
- Inspect the screen again under the same lighting. If the grain remains and there is no removable contamination, further cleaning is unlikely to help.
Can you remove the grain?
If the grain comes from an intact anti-glare surface, there is no safe cleaning fix: the texture is part of how the finish works. Do not peel, scrape, or abrade the layer. ASUS identifies the polarizer and anti-reflective or anti-glare film as important imaging components and warns that forcibly removing or damaging the film can cause abnormal image behavior and affect warranty coverage. Its care guidance specifically says not to scratch, peel, or tear the film with fingernails, blades, or tools.
What to do if the texture bothers you
Compare actual displays with different finishes in the lighting where you normally use them. Matte screens can reduce sharp reflections in bright rooms, while glossy screens tend to look clearer but show direct reflections more plainly. Neither finish is best for every room or viewer. When comparing, look at fine details and text as well as how strongly lamps or windows reflect, and check any haze or coating specification for the exact model. A general “matte” label does not guarantee the same appearance across screens. RTINGS’ finish comparison discusses the trade-off.
