A full-page screenshot usually captures the document’s scrollable area—not every nested scroll container inside it. If a div has a constrained height and its own overflow: auto or overflow: scroll, its offscreen content may remain outside the screenshot. To capture it, identify the scrolling element, then expand a static panel or scroll and capture a dynamic one.
Why the content is missing
A full-page capture extends the page-level capture beyond the current viewport. It does not necessarily expand each element that scrolls independently. A constrained overflow div has its own visible window and scroll position; scrolling that div can reveal content without making the document itself taller.

How overflow creates a separate scrolling region
CSS overflow determines what happens when content exceeds an element’s box. With auto or scroll, excess content is clipped to the element and can be reached by scrolling it. hidden clips content without showing scrollbars, although it can still be scrolled programmatically. A height constraint combined with one of these overflow values can therefore make a panel’s content scrollable without extending the document. See MDN’s CSS overflow reference.

Find which element actually scrolls
- Inspect the suspected div in browser developer tools. Check computed
overflow-y,height,max-height,block-size, andmax-block-size. - Compare the panel’s
scrollHeightwith itsclientHeight. IfscrollHeight > clientHeight, it has content beyond its visible area. - Scroll the page, then the panel. If the omitted content appears only when the panel moves, the panel is the nested scroll container.
- Inspect the actual rendered DOM if the visible wrapper is not the scrolling element. The relevant container may be inside an iframe or Shadow DOM.

Choose a capture method that fits the content
Static panel: expand it temporarily
If the full content is already present and stable, remove the panel’s height limit and clipping for the capture. A capture-time CSS override can look like this:

}Apply the rule only to the intended element, capture after layout settles, then restore the original styles or discard the capture page. Expanding the panel can reflow the page and change sticky or fixed positioning, so inspect the output. This produces a capture of the expanded layout, which may differ from the UI users normally see.
Panel-only image: target the element, but do not assume it expands
An element screenshot is useful when the deliverable should show just the panel. However, targeting an element does not automatically mean its clipped, scrollable overflow will be included. If the entire inner content is required, pair element targeting with a deliberate expansion or scroll-and-capture workflow. The Playwright issue discussion includes element targeting as an approach, while reports in that discussion also illustrate why overflow behavior needs to be checked for the specific page.

Dynamic or virtualized content: scroll, wait, capture, stitch
If rows or images load as the user scrolls, or a virtualized list renders only nearby items, expanding the div may not reveal the complete content. Scroll the nested container in increments, wait for each section to render, capture the visible region, and stitch the captures with overlap. Overlap helps account for sticky headers and alignment; verify row continuity, since variable-height content and recycled DOM nodes can defeat a simple stitch. This is a workflow to implement and validate for the page, not a built-in guarantee of a screenshot API.
Whole-document behavior: change the page layout only if intended
If the product should have one page-level scroll region, reconsider the panel’s fixed height or overflow rule so its content contributes to document height. Nested scrolling can be intentional, especially on small screens, so changing it affects usability as well as capture output.

Other causes to check before changing CSS
- Lazy loading: content may not exist or be rendered until its region is approached. Scroll it and wait for the content before capturing.
- Virtualization: increasing the panel height may not help when the page only keeps nearby items in the DOM. Capture successive scroll positions and check that no items are skipped.
- Sticky headers, fixed elements, or animation: these can shift or cover content across expanded layouts or stitched captures. Wait for stable rendering and inspect overlaps.
- Frames and Shadow DOM: the visible wrapper may not own the scroll position. Locate the actual rendered scrolling element before applying an override.
- Screenshot region: if only the panel is needed, capture that region; if the whole page is needed, remember that document-level full-page capture and nested overflow are separate problems.
