A server restart can leave a YouTube stream offline because the encoder did not restart or reconnect to YouTube’s ingest server. If YouTube is receiving the encoder’s feed but the event still shows offline, the issue may instead be the broadcast’s state. Check the encoder and YouTube’s incoming preview first; the title alone cannot identify which failed.
What “offline” can mean
YouTube’s live-stream setup has two related parts: the liveStream, which represents the feed sent by the encoder, and the liveBroadcast, which represents the event shown to viewers. YouTube documents their statuses separately. An active stream status means YouTube is receiving data from the encoder; it does not, by itself, prove that the broadcast is live. Google’s Live Streaming API documentation describes the separate stream and broadcast resources and their status.

That makes the first diagnostic question simple: is YouTube receiving a feed? In Live Control Room, check for a preview and stream health. If you use the API, check whether liveStreams.status.streamStatus is active. No incoming feed points toward the encoder, its configuration, or its connection; an incoming feed with an offline event points toward the broadcast state.
Diagnose the restart in order

Confirm that the encoder process started
Check the process, service, or container that runs the encoder. Confirm it is running and producing output after the host restart. A reachable server does not guarantee that the encoder resumed. Review its logs around startup for errors or an exit immediately after launch.

Verify the YouTube destination and stream key
Confirm that the encoder has the intended YouTube server URL and stream key. YouTube describes these as the settings the encoder uses to send a feed for acceptance. Its Help page says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Manage live stream settings.
Do not assume a host restart changed the key. Resetting a key is a separate action; if you do reset one, update the encoder with the new key. YouTube recommends a new key for certain encoder startup errors, not for every machine restart. Troubleshoot live stream errors.

Check whether YouTube receives the feed
Open the event in Live Control Room and look for the incoming preview and stream-health information. If the preview is absent, the encoder may not be sending data, may be using the wrong destination settings, or may be unable to reach YouTube. If you use the Live Streaming API, an

If there is no feed, inspect the host’s startup path
These are deployment checks, not settings prescribed by YouTube. Check that the service or container has a restart policy, that its startup command runs, and that required dependencies and secrets or configuration are available when it starts. Check network egress as well. A process that starts before a required dependency or credential is ready may fail to reconnect.

If YouTube receives data, inspect the broadcast state
Check the event’s state separately from the incoming stream. YouTube’s API models broadcast and stream status independently and documents broadcast lifecycle states such as
testingandlive. For API-managed events, inspect both resources rather than treating an active incoming feed as proof that the event is live. LiveBroadcasts resource documentation.
Make recovery predictable before the next stream
Test the full restart and recovery path before relying on it for an important event. YouTube recommends testing a stream, monitoring its health, and checking that it is accessible from the channel and watch pages. If you have a backup encoder configured, test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network and verifying that playback rolls over to the backup. Set up a live stream with an encoder and Use backup encoders for live streaming.

When choosing or configuring a recovery method, verify that it can restart the encoder, retain the correct YouTube URL and key, detect whether output resumes, and distinguish missing ingest from a broadcast-state problem. If you depend on failover, test that path rather than assuming it works. YouTube’s guidance supports testing and monitoring, but does not prescribe cloud-provider-specific service settings.
