But those symptoms do not prove the cable is at fault: the source device, TV input or settings, and the TV itself can cause similar problems. Check the TV’s own menu and test the connection before buying a replacement.
Why the picture can fail with one HDMI cable
“4K” describes resolution, not the full signal requirement. Refresh rate, HDR, color format, and the capabilities of the connected devices affect how much data the connection must carry. A cable might work for one format but fail intermittently with a more demanding one. HDMI Licensing Administrator describes Premium High Speed cables as supporting up to 18 Gbps, with examples such as 4K at 60 Hz and HDR; its Ultra High Speed category supports up to 48 Gbps and includes formats such as 4K at 120 Hz. See HDMI’s cable-category overview.

A poor connection is another possibility: a plug that is not firmly seated or a visibly damaged cable can interrupt the signal. The same black screen or flicker can also come from the source device, the selected input, TV settings, or a fault in the television. LG and Samsung both advise checking external connections and isolating devices when diagnosing picture problems. LG’s flicker guidance and Samsung’s picture troubleshooting describe these checks.
How to find out whether the cable is responsible
- Check the TV’s on-screen display. While the picture is failing, open the TV menu or display its volume bar. If that display stays stable while the HDMI picture fails, the issue may be with the connected device or cable. If the menu itself flickers, consult the TV maker’s service guidance; LG recommends this distinction in its flicker troubleshooting.
- Reseat the connection. Turn off the TV and source device, then unplug and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends. Check for visible damage and confirm the TV is on the intended HDMI input. LG and Samsung include connection checks in their troubleshooting guidance.
- Swap one component at a time. Try another HDMI port, another source device, or a cable already known to work. Changing one thing at a time helps identify which part changes the symptom. Samsung recommends testing different external devices and sources in its picture troubleshooting steps.
- Check the source and TV settings. Compare the output settings with the manuals for the exact devices. LG’s guide to accessing 4K content from an external device says to check that the source is outputting an appropriate 2160p signal and that the relevant 4K-related TV HDMI option is enabled. Menu names and availability vary by model.
- Replace the cable if the checks point to it. Substitution or a supported cable diagnostic can implicate a cable; visible damage or a cable that does not suit the desired format are also reasons to replace it. If the TV’s own menu or picture test shows the fault too, use the manufacturer’s support path instead of assuming a new cable will fix the TV.
When a TV cable test may help
Some Samsung TV models include an HDMI cable test, but it is not available on every model. Samsung says its test is designed for cables under 2 m, so results may not be useful for longer runs. Check the instructions for your exact model before relying on the test.

Which HDMI cable category to choose
Match the cable to the signal format the devices in the connection can actually use. The TV, source, any receiver or soundbar in the path, and cable all need to support the selected format. A higher-tier cable cannot make an unsupported input or source output support a higher format.
| Setup need | Cable category to consider | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible 4K/60 HDR setup | Premium High Speed HDMI | HDMI Licensing Administrator describes this category as certified for up to 18 Gbps, with examples including 4K/60, HDR, and expanded color-space formats. HDMI cable overview. |
| Formats requiring up to 48 Gbps, including relevant 4K/120 setups | Ultra High Speed HDMI | HDMI Licensing Administrator describes this category as supporting up to 48 Gbps. Its certification program covers performance and low electromagnetic emissions. Ultra High Speed certification program. |
When buying, use the cable category and its stated capability rather than relying on “HDMI 2.0” or “HDMI 2.1” shorthand. HDMI Licensing Administrator says the category should appear on the cable and packaging. For Ultra High Speed, the certification label can be scanned to verify certification. See the cable overview and certification guidance. Choose a cable length that suits the installation; do not assume that moving to the highest category improves picture quality when the existing connection already works reliably.
