Whether that happens depends on the disk’s motion and self-gravity, the mass concentrated near its center, and how the surrounding dark matter halo responds. Gas and encounters can also shape a galaxy’s history, but none is a universal switch that determines whether a bar forms.
What a galactic bar is—and how it grows
A stellar bar is an elongated arrangement of stars that crosses a galaxy’s center. It is not a rigid structure inserted into the galaxy; it emerges from the collective motion of stars in the disk.

In a useful simplified picture, stars’ orbits depart slightly from circles. If enough of those elongations line up, their combined gravity reinforces the alignment, drawing more stars into the growing pattern. NASA’s account of a Hubble study described the process this way: “The tiny elongations in the stars’ orbits grow and they get locked into place, making a bar.” This orbital picture is the intuitive version of a global, non-axisymmetric instability: a disk-wide pattern that grows because the disk’s own dynamics reinforce it. NASA’s account of the Hubble study and a review of bar formation explain the mechanism in more detail. Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics
Why some stellar disks are more susceptible
Disk temperature and self-gravity
A dynamically cool stellar disk—one in which stellar motions do not strongly resist changes in orbital shape—and a disk with substantial self-gravity are more responsive to a disturbance. Those conditions can make a global distortion easier to amplify. They describe susceptibility, not a guarantee: galaxies with similar broad characteristics need not form bars on the same schedule or by an identical route. The Annual Review’s discussion of bar dynamics distinguishes the disk’s instability from a simple one-factor rule.

The inner mass distribution
How mass is arranged near the center also matters. In collisionless simulations, compact classical bulges prevented bars from growing for at least 4 billion years, even in models with a maximal, low-Toomre-Q stellar disk. That is a result for those modeled systems, not evidence that every unbarred galaxy has a compact bulge. The simulation study
A 2024 analysis of the TNG50 cosmological simulation found that its barred galaxies had systematically higher central stellar mass relative to dark matter before bar formation. Read alongside the bulge simulations, this points to the importance of central structure and the balance of mass there—not a single universal threshold that divides barred from unbarred galaxies. The TNG50 analysis
Dark matter halos: mass is not the whole story
Dark matter does not simply suppress bars. Some early models found that a massive halo could stabilize a disk. But a halo that responds dynamically is different from a fixed background: a live halo can absorb angular momentum from a bar and help the bar grow. Halo mass and halo response therefore cannot be treated as interchangeable explanations. The Annual Review’s account of halo–bar dynamics

Gas and encounters can influence the outcome, but are not required switches
Gas affects how a bar forms and evolves, but gas-rich galaxies are not barred by definition—or barred galaxies excluded by gas content. An analysis of the local S4G survey found bars across a broad range of atomic gas fractions and colors. The observed relationship between gas and bar frequency depends on the sample and how the images resolve bars. The S4G analysis
A passing companion or merger can perturb a disk and affect its bar history. It is not necessary in every formation history, however: the TNG50 analysis found no clear link between mergers and the disk instabilities that led to bars in its sample. Interactions can promote, delay, create, or destroy bars under different conditions, so their effect depends on timing and the state of the galaxy. The TNG50 analysis
Bars change galaxies after they form
A bar can redistribute angular momentum and drive gas toward a galaxy’s center. That inflow can contribute to central star formation and the buildup of central structures. Bar-driven inflow has also been proposed as a way to fuel an active galactic nucleus, but that connection has not been observationally established as a dependable outcome. A bar’s effects are part of a galaxy’s continuing evolution, not just a feature that distinguishes one spiral from another. Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics S4G analysis

What bar counts tell us—and what they do not
Survey results show that bar frequency varies with the galaxies being counted and how they are observed. They are population measurements, not rules for predicting whether an individual galaxy must have a bar.
| Study context | Reported result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Hubble/COSMOS study, reported by NASA in 2008; more than 2,000 spiral galaxies | About 20% of the distant sample had bars, compared with nearly 70% of modern counterparts | A study-specific comparison across cosmic time, not a universal fraction for all galaxies today. NASA’s account |
| S4G local-universe analysis, 2018 | Bar frequency reached approximately 0.70 near a stellar mass of 109.7 solar masses | A local-sample result that depends on mass and measurement choices; the study also found that resolution thresholds can reproduce some apparent survey trends. The S4G analysis |
These figures need not conflict. The Hubble comparison concerns distant and modern populations across cosmic time, while the S4G result describes local galaxies by stellar mass. Epoch, mass selection, bar-strength definition, wavelength, and image resolution can all affect the reported fraction.

Why one spiral has a bar and another does not
The best explanation is a combination of conditions and history. A disk’s susceptibility determines how readily stellar orbits can reinforce a large-scale pattern; the central distribution of stars, bulge, gas, and dark matter shapes that susceptibility; and a responsive halo or external encounter can alter the evolution. Since galaxies change over time, the difference is not a fixed divide between two kinds of spiral: it reflects how each galaxy’s structure and dynamics have developed.
