Some PCs have two Ethernet ports so they can connect to separate networks, provide a configured backup link, or support a network setup such as link aggregation. On workstation and server systems, extra ports can also serve multiple clients, devices, or virtual machines. Two jacks alone do not combine bandwidth or double your internet speed; their purpose depends on the hardware and how the network is configured.
What two Ethernet ports mean
Each Ethernet port is a separate network interface. For ordinary home or office use, you can connect one port to your router or switch and leave the other unused. A second port gives the PC another way to connect, but plugging in two cables does not automatically make them act as one faster connection.
Why a PC might have two Ethernet ports
Connecting to separate networks
A PC can connect one interface to a production network and another to a lab, storage network, or other segment. With suitable software and configuration, it can also route or control traffic between those networks. The second port is only a physical connection point: it does not automatically provide routing, internet sharing, or secure separation. ASUS describes the dual Gigabit LAN design on its Z7S WS workstation board as allowing a PC to serve as a gateway between two separate networks (ASUS Z7S WS manual).
Link aggregation for capacity or resilience
Link aggregation—also called teaming, bonding, or port aggregation—groups physical links into a logical connection. Depending on the method and traffic, it can increase aggregate capacity across multiple connections or provide a backup if a link fails. It must be configured, and the PC’s network interface, software, and network equipment must support a compatible method. For LACP, for example, the switch or router generally also needs LACP support; an unmanaged switch does not support link aggregation (ASUS LACP guidance; NETGEAR on managed and unmanaged switches).

Do not assume two 1 Gb/s ports will give one download or application a 2 Gb/s connection. Intel says bandwidth gains in the teaming modes it describes are available when connecting to multiple destination addresses, and TrueNAS says LACP does not improve performance for a single-user TrueNAS system (Intel adapter teaming guide; TrueNAS interface documentation). The result depends on the implementation and workload.
Failover when a link fails
A configured failover setup can move traffic to another interface if a cable, port, or link stops working. Some configurations can also use separate switches so that a switch failure does not necessarily take down both links. Coverage depends on the mode and network design: two ports do not provide redundancy until they are configured for it. Intel documents adapter and switch fault-tolerance modes, while ASRock describes traffic moving from a failed port to a working one (Intel adapter teaming guide; ASRock X570 Taichi manual).

How to tell what the ports on your PC are for
- Check the exact model’s manual or specifications. Port count, speed, and role vary by model. A Supermicro X14SBW-F/-TF motherboard family, for example, lists variants with dual 1 GbE or dual 10 GbE RJ45 LAN ports, along with a separate dedicated BMC LAN port (Supermicro X14SBW-F/-TF specifications).
- Look for a separate management port. A BMC LAN connection is for out-of-band hardware management on supported systems; it is not necessarily another general-purpose Ethernet port for the operating system.
- Identify your intended setup. If you only need normal network access, connect one port. If you need separate networks, failover, or aggregation, confirm that the PC and the rest of the network support the required configuration.
- Check the workload before expecting more throughput. Aggregation may help with multiple traffic streams or provide resilience, but the benefit is not guaranteed for one user or one transfer.
