Why Do Social Platforms Ignore My og:image Tag?

An og:image tag can be present while a platform cannot retrieve or use the image. Diagnose the page response, image access, platform requirements, and cached previews.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An og:image tag in your page source is only the starting point: the platform must fetch the page, read its metadata, retrieve the image, and use it in a preview. If any step fails—or the platform is showing cached data—the image may be missing or outdated. Check the exact page and image URLs the crawler can access, then apply the affected platform’s own requirements.

Why a present og:image tag may not appear

Your browser displaying the page correctly does not prove that a social crawler received the same HTML or could retrieve the image. LinkedIn specifically identifies blocked image retrieval and protected image locations as reasons an otherwise qualifying image may not appear. A preview can also lag behind a recent change because platforms cache link data.

That makes diagnosis a sequence: inspect the delivered page response, verify the image URL is publicly retrievable, check the platform’s specifications, and account for its cache. Requirements and refresh behavior are platform-specific; LinkedIn’s published figures below should not be treated as universal rules.

Check the page and image in order

  1. Inspect the HTML delivered for the exact page URL

Check the response the crawler would receive, not only a template or the browser’s rendered view. Confirm it contains the relevant Open Graph tags. LinkedIn lists og:title, og:image, og:description, and og:url in its guidance: Make your website shareable on LinkedIn.

  2. Open the exact image URL

Use the full URL specified in og:image. Check that it resolves to the intended image without requiring a login or access to a protected directory. LinkedIn says a site may block it from pulling the image or store it somewhere protected. Firewalls, bot controls, redirects, and response headers are reasonable engineering checks if retrieval fails, but their effect depends on the platform and its crawler.

  3. Compare the image with the affected platform’s requirements

For LinkedIn, the published sharing guidance specifies a maximum file size of 5 MB, minimum dimensions of 1200 × 627 pixels, and a recommended 1.91:1 ratio. These are LinkedIn specifications, not a guarantee for other networks. Consult the affected service’s current documentation or validator for its own format and limits.

  4. Refresh or allow time for cached data to change

If you changed the tag or image recently, the platform may still show its previous preview. LinkedIn advises allowing 48 hours after the last share or tag update for its cached content to refresh. Use the platform’s official inspector if available; cache schedules and tools differ, and the LinkedIn timing should not be assumed for another service. See Troubleshooting issues sharing URLs.

  5. Check controls for the specific crawler

Review access restrictions and crawler-related rules on both the page and image host. Do not assume that a rule documented for one service has the same meaning to another. In particular, Google Search’s documentation about indexing and image previews describes Google Search, not social-sharing crawlers: Google Search Central: robots meta tag, data-nosnippet, and X-Robots-Tag.

LinkedIn’s documented requirements, specifically

LinkedIn says its sharing module uses oEmbeds and/or Open Graph Protocol to display a link’s title, description, and image. Its published guidance calls for og:title, og:image, og:description, and og:url, and specifies the image limits described above. It also identifies blocked retrieval or a protected image location as possible explanations when a qualifying image does not appear. The cited LinkedIn pages do not state a publication year in the retrieved text.

For Meta and X, current official image limits, crawler access rules, and cache refresh schedules are not established here. Verify those details with the relevant service rather than applying LinkedIn’s values across platforms.

Capture the page while diagnosing its delivered content

A screenshot can help you see what a page looks like in a browser, but it does not by itself prove what a social crawler received or whether that crawler can fetch the Open Graph image. If you need a reproducible visual capture of the public page as a separate check, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers: ScreenshotNeo.

Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Troubleshooting symptoms

  • The tag is present in the template, but no preview image appears: inspect the delivered HTML for the exact shared URL. Confirm the metadata is in the response available to the crawler.
  • The image opens for you but not in the preview: check whether the exact image URL requires authentication or sits behind an access restriction. LinkedIn explicitly names blocked retrieval and protected locations as possible causes.
  • The image appears on LinkedIn but not at the expected dimensions: compare it with LinkedIn’s stated 5 MB maximum, 1200 × 627 pixel minimum, and recommended 1.91:1 ratio. Look up the other platform’s own specifications rather than reusing these figures.
  • The old image remains after a change: allow LinkedIn’s stated 48-hour refresh period after the last share or tag update; for other networks, check their current cache guidance or inspector.
  • Google Search settings seem relevant: distinguish search indexing and search-result previews from social link previews. Google’s robots documentation does not establish how LinkedIn, Meta, or X handles a shared link.
