SNES games look different on modern TVs because the console’s low-resolution analog video has to be adapted to a flat panel’s fixed pixel grid. The TV’s input handling, scaling, image settings, and aspect ratio all affect the result. A retro scaler can take over some of that conversion, but neither a scaler nor a CRT-style filter makes an LCD or OLED physically identical to a CRT.
Why the same SNES game can look different from one TV to another
The SNES sends an older, low-resolution video signal; a modern flat-panel TV displays a fixed grid of pixels. The signal therefore has to be processed and mapped onto that grid before it can appear on screen. The TV, any converter or scaler in the path, and the connection used can each affect how the image looks.

Scaling changes the appearance of pixels
When a low-resolution image is enlarged to fit a modern screen, the processing determines how source pixels map to display pixels. Depending on the TV and signal path, edges may look soft, unusually sharp, uneven, or more block-like. A dedicated scaler can perform this conversion before sending a digital signal such as HDMI to the TV.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCRT presentation is more than scanlines
A CRT displays an analog signal through a different physical process from an LCD or OLED. Its image’s line structure and blending contribute to the overall vintage look; simply laying dark horizontal lines over a picture reproduces only one part of that presentation. A 2014 conference-proceedings paper discusses visible line spacing in low-resolution progressive images on CRTs as technical context, not as a specification for every SNES game: the paper.

Connections and TV processing matter
Composite, S-Video, component, RGB/SCART, and other connections carry video differently, and a TV or scaler must support the particular signal. TVs also vary in how they handle legacy inputs. Some viewers report issues such as deinterlacing artifacts, input lag, or incorrect aspect-ratio handling, but those reports do not establish that every TV has the same problem. Specific advice about a TV’s behavior requires its make and model.
How to improve the picture on an HDTV
Start with the problem you can see: a stretched image, unwanted softness, harsh pixel edges, motion artifacts, or perceived lag may point to different parts of the setup. These options change different things, so compare compatibility and presentation rather than assuming a new cable alone will fix the picture.

| Option | What it changes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Connect directly to a TV with a compatible analog input | Leaves the TV to process the original signal | Whether the TV accepts the signal; its aspect-ratio and picture-processing controls; perceived lag |
| Use a dedicated retro scaler | Converts and scales an analog source, then sends a digital signal such as HDMI | Supported input type, output format, processing features, latency, and preferred sharpness |
| Use a compatible analog cable | May provide a different signal path when the console and receiving device both support it | Exact SNES revision and cable compatibility, plus the TV or scaler’s inputs |
| Use a CRT or CRT-style filter/profile | Changes the presentation toward a softer, line-structured vintage image | Whether you prefer that look and whether convenience or a more CRT-like presentation matters more |
Check aspect ratio and picture settings first
- Check the TV’s aspect-ratio setting. If the picture looks stretched, switch away from a widescreen fill setting toward a correctly proportioned 4:3 presentation where available.
- Inspect the signal path. Confirm that the TV or scaler accepts the signal from your exact SNES model and cable. A label such as “HDMI converter” alone does not establish that a device handles the console’s signal as you want.
- Then assess sharpness, motion, and lag. If the proportions are right but the image still looks soft or produces artifacts, the TV’s handling of that input or the intervening scaler may be involved. Game Mode is often suggested in community discussions, but the official sources cited here do not establish one universal setting or result across TV models.
What a scaler can and cannot do
A scaler is useful when the TV does not accept or handle the console’s analog signal as desired. Check its accepted inputs and output formats against both the console and the display before buying. For example, RetroTINK’s manufacturer pages describe the 5X Pro as accepting composite, S-Video, component, RGB, and SCART, supporting 240p and other standard-definition formats, and outputting up to 1080p. Its 4K scaler page describes analog inputs, pixel-perfect scaling, CRT simulation, and output up to 4K60. These are stated product capabilities, not independent comparative test results or recommendations for every setup.

RetroTINK’s 2X article discusses line doubling and shows an SNES/component-cable connection path. It also notes that some differences may not be noticeable to every viewer after a TV rescales the image. A scaler can improve conversion and scaling, but it cannot make a flat panel physically behave exactly like a CRT.

Choose a CRT filter for a different presentation
If you play on a Super NES Classic rather than original SNES hardware, Nintendo documents CRT Filter, 4:3, and Pixel Perfect display options for its games on that system: Nintendo Support’s display-mode guide. These documented modes apply to the Classic; they should not be treated as settings for every original-console and TV combination. A filter is a convenient approximation, not an original CRT display.

Check compatibility before changing hardware
- Identify the console revision. SNES variants may not share every output capability, so verify cable compatibility for the specific unit.
- Match both ends of the chain. Check that the scaler accepts the console’s signal and that its output is supported by the TV.
- Choose the intended look. Decide whether you prefer a softer CRT-like image or clearly separated, sharper pixels; a single pixel-perfect setting is not necessarily right for every game or display chain.
- Keep claims model-specific. If artifacts or lag persist, the display’s treatment of that input may be a factor. Community posts can illustrate individual experiences, but do not establish universal TV behavior.
