An RPG companion who stops following is usually not permanently gone. They may be waiting at a commanded location, walking home after dismissal, stuck on terrain, detached from the party, unavailable during a quest, or affected by a scripting bug. Start by checking the companion’s current command and the last place or transition that separated you. Then use the recovery steps documented for that specific game—there is no universal follower button or fix.
The fastest safe approach is to check the party state, revisit the last wait point, inspect the companion’s home or dismissal route, try a title-supported travel transition, and only then advance the relevant quest or revert to an earlier save.

Start with the last command, location and transition
Before changing quests or deleting saves, reconstruct what happened immediately before the companion vanished. These details distinguish a normal wait or return behavior from a quest lock or software fault.

Controls and labels differ by platform, edition and version. Do not assume that a “Companion wheel,” an “Activities” menu or a party-link toggle exists in another RPG.

Run a safe troubleshooting sequence
- Open the party or follower controls. Confirm that the character is recruited, assigned to the active group and set to Follow rather than Wait or Stay. In games with portraits or group links, make sure the companion is still connected to your party.
- Return to the last place you issued an order. A wait command is often the entire explanation. Skyrim’s official support guidance states that a follower told to wait remains where you asked them to wait. Search that exact room, camp, settlement or waypoint before trying more disruptive fixes.
- Check the dismissal destination. A dismissed follower may be heading to a home, ship, base or hub. Fallout: New Vegas support notes that companions can travel toward home or the Lucky 38 and become stuck in world terrain on the way.
- Try a supported in-game transition. Depending on the title, this can mean Fast Travel, moving to another system or planet, sleeping, changing ships, or entering a different area. Treat it as a recovery attempt, not a guarantee that works in every RPG.
- Inspect the active quest and its checkpoint. A companion can be intentionally unavailable during a story sequence, or a failed script can leave them out of place. Advance the blocked objective only when the game’s support instructions identify that as a remedy.
- Use title-specific repair steps. Restarting, verifying files, recruiting a test companion, or replaying a mission can be appropriate in one game and irrelevant in another.
- Reload cautiously. Load a save from before the disappearance only after preserving your newest save in a separate slot. Everything done after the older save will be lost.
When a wait or follow command is the real fix
Wait states are easy to overlook
“Missing” often means “waiting.” Some games leave a companion exactly where you ordered them to stay, with no automatic return when you move to another region. Check your dialogue history or memory of the last command, then revisit that spot. In Starfield, Bethesda provides a direct recovery option: open Activities and choose Retrieve Waiting Followers. That menu is a Starfield feature, not a general RPG instruction.
New Vegas can leave companions in Wait mode
Bethesda’s Fallout: New Vegas support describes a specific Lucky 38 situation in which companions remain in Wait mode. Select Follow on the companion wheel, or speak to the companion and ask them to follow. The support article also gives the concise advice: “If a companion is not following the player, try using the “Wait” command or Fast Traveling to another location.” In that game, issuing Wait and then changing location can refresh a non-following companion, but the same sequence should not be assumed to work elsewhere.
Dismissed companions, home locations and pathing failures
Dismissal is not the same as deletion
Many RPGs send a dismissed companion back to a defined home rather than keeping them beside the player. Check the settlement, ship, lodge, faction base or other recruitment location associated with that character. If the game provides a roster or recruitment dialogue, use it to confirm whether the companion is available rather than searching every map cell.
Terrain can interrupt the return trip
Fallout: New Vegas support warns that a dismissed companion may path toward home or the Lucky 38 and become stuck in world terrain. Look along the likely route, especially near doors, slopes, narrow passages and loading boundaries. A Fast Travel transition may make the character resolve to the destination, but it is a game-specific suggestion rather than a universal teleport command.
Game-specific fixes documented by official support
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Bethesda’s guidance for a lost follower starts with retracing your steps. If you told the follower to wait, they should still be at that location. Once you have checked it, use Fast Travel to another location; Bethesda recommends this as a way to bring a missing follower to your new destination. If neither step works, use a save from before the follower disappeared and verify that the character was not killed or removed by a quest condition in your particular playthrough.

The important limitation is scope: this advice concerns Skyrim’s follower system. It does not establish that every RPG will move a companion after Fast Travel or that every missing character can be recovered this way.
Fallout: New Vegas
New Vegas has several documented states that look identical in play. Bethesda suggests trying the Wait command or Fast Traveling for a companion who is not following, checking the recruitment or home location after dismissal, and reloading a previous save if necessary. In the Lucky 38 case, select Follow on the companion wheel or request Follow through dialogue.
Use the clue that matches your event. If you dismissed the character, search their home or the route toward it. If the companion is standing nearby but idle, issue Follow. If they vanished after a transition, travel to another location and check the party again before reverting your save.
Starfield
Starfield’s official support lists several checks for a missing or stuck companion:
- Open Activities and use Retrieve Waiting Followers.
- Sleep at the Lodge or on your ship.
- Travel to a different system or planet.
- Change ships when the game allows it.
- Advance the quest if recruitment or availability is tied to the current objective.
- Recruit Vasco as a recruitment test when the companion system itself appears not to be assigning anyone.
- Reload a save made before the issue.
These are Starfield support suggestions, not a promise that every companion responds to every step. If one character returns while another cannot be recruited, the problem may be tied to that character’s quest or location rather than the entire party system.

Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar’s support article, updated March 29, 2024, documents a narrowly defined camp problem. Four camp companions may appear only when they have missions after a particular Chapter 2 mission was completed using Retry Checkpoint. The article says those companions return to camp at the beginning of Chapter 4.
For that exact scenario, Rockstar’s interim advice is to replay the mission without using Retry Checkpoint, or load a save from before the failure. Do not generalize this report to every Red Dead Redemption 2 companion or to other RPGs. The documented condition is tied to a mission, chapter and checkpoint behavior; Rockstar’s article does not state whether a later game update changed its status.
Baldur’s Gate 3
Larian’s official patch notes record fixes for several symptoms that players could mistake for an incorrect command: companions failing to follow after recruitment, groups becoming unlinked when using waypoints, and non-player characters disappearing or getting stuck while running away. These notes demonstrate that follower behavior can be a software defect even when the player did everything correctly.
Patch notes do not provide a single procedure for every current disappearance. If the issue persists after re-linking the party and reloading a recent save, check the game’s current patch state and support guidance for your platform rather than applying a workaround from an unrelated title.
Genshin Impact
Genshin Impact’s relevant support flow concerns stuck, missing or visually incorrect non-player characters, who are not necessarily party companions. HoYoverse recommends exiting and restarting the game, then verifying game files through the wrench icon on the login page. If the character remains missing, contact support with screenshots or video.

Use this process only when the symptom involves an NPC covered by that support category. It is not evidence that a standard party companion in another RPG can be restored by file verification.

Travel transitions force a game to unload and reload areas, which can resolve a follower that failed to attach to the current map. Bethesda explicitly recommends Fast Travel for a lost Skyrim follower and for a non-following New Vegas companion. Starfield support expands the same idea to traveling between systems or planets, sleeping at the Lodge or ship, and changing ships where possible.
These actions are low-risk compared with deleting saves, but they are not universal guarantees. A companion blocked by a quest condition, dead by game rules, or trapped in a broken script may remain absent after several transitions. Record the last command and location before testing travel so you can tell whether the transition changed anything.
Quest locks and checkpoint scripting
Story systems can temporarily remove a companion, move them to a scene, or prevent recruitment until an objective advances. Check the current quest description, recent mission completion and any active checkpoint retry. If official support identifies quest progression as a remedy, complete the stated objective and then revisit the companion location.

The Red Dead Redemption 2 camp issue illustrates why timing matters: the documented failure depends on a particular Chapter 2 mission completed with Retry Checkpoint, and the listed companions are said to return at the beginning of Chapter 4. A generic “continue the story” instruction would be misleading for players whose disappearance has a different cause.
How to decide whether to reload, verify files or contact support
Reload an earlier save
Use an earlier save when the companion vanished immediately after a known event and the game offers no less disruptive repair. Make a separate copy or manual save first. A reload restores the game state but removes all progress made after that save, including exploration, loot and quest work.
Restart or verify files
A full restart can clear a temporary loading or display state. In Genshin Impact, the documented file-verification path is the wrench icon on the login page. Other games may expose verification through their launcher or platform, but no universal menu path is established. Follow the title’s own support instructions and avoid deleting configuration or save files unless support specifically directs it.
Contact support with reproducible details
Escalate when the problem repeats across reloads or occurs after the documented steps. Include the game and platform, version if visible, companion name, last command, last location, quest or mission, transition that preceded the disappearance, and a screenshot or video. HoYoverse specifically asks for screenshots or video for persistent NPC problems.

A compact decision tree
- Is the companion waiting? Return to the last wait point. In Starfield, use Activities > Retrieve Waiting Followers.
- Was the companion dismissed? Check the character’s home, base or hub and the route toward it. New Vegas companions can get stuck on terrain while returning.
- Is the character present but idle? Re-link the party and issue Follow. In the documented New Vegas Lucky 38 case, use the wheel or dialogue.
- Did the problem follow Fast Travel, a system change or a waypoint? Try the transition supported by that game, then inspect the party again.
- Did it begin during a quest or checkpoint retry? Read the objective and apply the mission-specific workaround. Do not extrapolate the RDR2 Chapter 2 fix to unrelated missions.
- Does it persist after a restart? Use title-specific file verification or support guidance, then consider a pre-incident save.
Preventing future companion losses
- Before dismissing a companion, note the destination the game names and make a manual save.
- When issuing Wait, record the room, settlement or landmark so you can return there.
- Keep rotating manual saves before major quests, checkpoint retries and long travel chains.
- After recruiting or changing a party, confirm that the portrait or grouping still shows the companion as linked.
- When a follower disappears, stop making irreversible quest choices until you identify whether they are waiting, returning home or story-gated.
- Keep the game updated, but check current support notes because an update can also change the behavior or workaround.
What “missing” actually means
A companion can be absent for several fundamentally different reasons: waiting at a commanded point, traveling after dismissal, stuck in terrain, detached from a party group, temporarily unavailable for a story sequence, affected by a checkpoint script, or genuinely bugged. The visible symptom is the same—no follower beside you—but the correct remedy depends on the game and the event that preceded it.
Use the title-specific evidence first: Skyrim’s wait-point and Fast Travel checks, New Vegas’s Follow, Wait, home-route and Lucky 38 guidance, Starfield’s retrieval and travel options, the mission-specific RDR2 workaround, BG3’s documented party-link and NPC fixes, or Genshin Impact’s restart and file-verification flow. If none matches your situation, preserve your saves and provide support with a precise timeline rather than repeatedly fast-traveling at random.
