Why Do RCA Cables Hum—and How Can You Find the Cause?

RCA connections can pick up hum through their shared signal-return and ground path. Use simple isolation tests to tell a cable fault from a system ground loop.

Yes. RCA cables can carry audible hum because they use an unbalanced connection: the ground path also serves as the signal return and commonly acts as the cable shield. Electrical noise on that path can enter the audio signal. But a hum that starts when you connect RCA cables does not automatically mean the cable is faulty; the cause may be a ground loop between devices, a damaged cable, or another part of the system.

Why an RCA connection can hum

In an unbalanced RCA connection, the signal travels alongside a ground path that also provides the return for the signal. Because that ground path commonly doubles as the cable shield, interference or current associated with connected equipment can affect the audio. This is one reason unbalanced connections can be more susceptible to noise than balanced connections. Sound Devices explains ground-loop noise, while Focusrite outlines the difference between balanced and unbalanced audio.

A ground loop or interaction between devices is especially plausible when the hum appears or changes after equipment is interconnected. That points to the audio system or its grounding paths, not necessarily a failed RCA lead. A loose plug, damaged cable, or inadequate shielding can still be responsible. Sennheiser’s troubleshooting guidance also treats ground-loop hum as a system issue to investigate.

How to isolate the source of the hum

Change one connection or component at a time and listen for what changes. This makes each test more informative than swapping several things at once.

  1. Check the connection and cable. Make sure the RCA plugs are fully seated and inspect the cable for visible damage. Move it away from power cables and possible sources of electrical interference; unbalanced cable grounds can pick up unwanted interference, as QSC notes in its guidance on unbalanced cables.
  2. Disconnect the RCA cable from the affected device’s input. If the hum stops, investigate the connected source and the audio path between devices. If it continues with the input disconnected, the noise may instead involve the powered device or its supply. This is a useful isolation clue, not a definitive diagnosis; Bose describes this test for its Solo 5 product.
  3. Substitute one known-good cable. If the hum changes or disappears, the original cable or one of its connections is suspect. A replacement is most useful when a cable fault is indicated; simply buying a different cable is not a reliable fix for a ground loop.
  4. Try another source or device, if practical. A different source can help establish whether the noise follows a particular component or connection. Keep the rest of the setup unchanged while testing.

Choose a remedy that matches the test result

What you observe What it suggests What to try
The hum changes or disappears with a known-good cable, or the original cable is loose or damaged. A cable or connection fault is plausible. Reseat or replace the faulty lead. A more expensive cable by itself is not a remedy for a ground loop.
The hum stops when the RCA input is disconnected. The connected audio system or a ground-loop path through the RCA connection deserves investigation. Check the source and connections. A compatible inline RCA ground-loop isolator is one possible option for this case, but it will not fix every kind of hum.
The hum remains with the RCA input disconnected. The connected source and RCA path are less likely to be the cause; the powered device or its supply may be involved. Consult the device’s support guidance or a qualified technician rather than assuming an RCA isolator will help.
Both devices have compatible balanced inputs and outputs. A balanced audio path may reduce susceptibility to noise. Use a compatible balanced connection if the equipment supports it. An adapter alone does not make an unbalanced input or output balanced.

Ground loops vary with the equipment and installation, so a single fix cannot be guaranteed. Sound Devices puts it plainly: “There is no definitive set of rules which can resolve every ground loop situation, but trial and error often leads to a solution.” Its ground-loop guidance recommends investigating the audio system rather than assuming one component is always at fault.

What not to do

  • Do not remove protective mains earth. Never disconnect a device’s safety earth to try to stop audio hum. Troubleshoot the audio path instead; seek qualified help if you suspect an electrical fault.
  • Do not assume every hum means a bad RCA cable. Replacing a lead makes sense when inspection or substitution points to a cable problem; a system-level grounding issue needs a different approach.
  • Do not assume an RCA isolator is a universal cure. It is a conditional option when the tests point to a ground-loop path through the RCA connection, not when the hum persists with the input disconnected.
