Why Do People Accept Bitcoin? The Reasons—and the Limits

Bitcoin’s design helps explain its appeal, but ownership, awareness and everyday payment use are different measures—and broad Bitcoin acceptance is not established by the available surveys.

People accept Bitcoin for its peer-to-peer design, user control and predictable issuance—but acceptance is not the same as widespread everyday use. In a 2025 U.S. survey, 9% of adults said they bought or held cryptocurrency as an investment, while 2% used cryptocurrency to buy something or make a payment. Those figures cover cryptocurrency generally, not Bitcoin alone.

What does “acceptance” mean?

The question can refer to several different things: knowing about Bitcoin, owning or holding it, being willing to use it, a merchant agreeing to take it, or a completed payment. These measures are not interchangeable. The available surveys here measure cryptocurrency broadly, so they do not establish a Bitcoin-specific ownership rate or a global share of merchants that accept Bitcoin.

For a U.S. snapshot, the Federal Reserve’s 2025 survey found that 10% of adults used cryptocurrency for any measured purpose; 9% bought or held it as an investment, and 2% used it to buy something or make a payment. The categories overlap: they describe different activities, not separate groups to add together. Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, 2026.

Why do some people accept or use Bitcoin?

Peer-to-peer control

Bitcoin is designed to let users send payments without relying on a conventional payment intermediary. Its open-source, decentralized protocol is publicly verifiable. For people who value direct control over transactions or want an alternative to some conventional payment networks, those properties can be appealing. They are design features and plausible reasons for support, not evidence that most people use Bitcoin this way. Bitcoin.org’s FAQ describes these features from Bitcoin’s own perspective.

#1 Best Overall
Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Rules that are visible and predictable

Bitcoin’s issuance follows rules set by its protocol, including a maximum supply. Supporters may value having issuance governed by public rules rather than decisions made by a single central authority. Predictable supply does not guarantee that Bitcoin’s market price will rise or remain stable.

A recipient may prefer it

In the Federal Reserve’s 2025 survey, among U.S. adults who used cryptocurrency for financial transactions, 26% named the recipient’s preference as their main reason. Other main reasons included speed (19%), privacy (17%), lower cost (14%), safety (9%) and distrust of banks (7%). These figures describe a subgroup’s reported reasons for using cryptocurrency—not all adults, Bitcoin holders, or people who accept Bitcoin.

A separate Kansas City Fed analysis of U.S. survey data found that, in 2024, more than 35% of crypto payment users cited the recipient’s preference; 18% cited speed, 13% cost and 12% privacy. The authors suggest that some payments may be passive: users pay in cryptocurrency because the payee prefers it. The survey, year and calculation differ from the Federal Reserve figures, so the results should not be combined. Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, 2025.

How common are cryptocurrency payments?

Holding or investing is more common than paying with cryptocurrency in the U.S. figures available here. The Federal Reserve’s 2025 survey found 9% of adults bought or held cryptocurrency as an investment and 2% used it to make a purchase or payment. The Kansas City Fed’s analysis found U.S. consumer cryptocurrency payment use below 2% in 2023 and 2024, after nearly 3% in 2021 and 2022. These are different survey presentations and periods, not a single continuous estimate; neither is Bitcoin-specific.

Awareness also exceeds ownership in at least one country-specific snapshot. In Norges Bank’s 2024 survey, 96% of people in Norway aged 16 and older were aware of crypto-assets, while 11% owned them. Lack of interest, lack of knowledge and perceived risk were common reasons non-owners gave. Awareness does not show that someone owns crypto or that local merchants accept it. Norges Bank, 2024.

What can make Bitcoin less appealing?

  • Volatility: Bitcoin’s value can change, making it less convenient for people who want a predictable amount to spend or receive. Bitcoin.org lists volatility as a consideration.
  • Limited merchant acceptance: Bitcoin.org notes that the number of businesses accepting Bitcoin remains limited. A recipient’s preference can matter in an individual transaction, but it does not mean Bitcoin is broadly accepted at checkout.
  • Public transaction records: Bitcoin is not anonymous. Bitcoin.org says transactions leave public records and do not provide the same privacy as cash. The fact that some survey respondents cite privacy as a reason to use cryptocurrency does not make Bitcoin transactions private.
  • Custody and security: People who hold Bitcoin themselves must make choices about wallets, backups and security. Bitcoin.org advises users to consider the maturity and security of the tools they use. A hardware wallet is one optional self-custody approach, not a requirement; no particular device is established here as a recommendation.
  • Payment alternatives may suit a given transaction better: The Kansas City Fed notes that stablecoins may be better suited to payments than volatile cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin because their value is intended to track another asset. That observation does not establish that any payment method is universally faster, cheaper or safer.

What the available figures can—and cannot—tell you

U.S. survey findings show that cryptocurrency payments are less common than buying or holding cryptocurrency as an investment; Norway’s figures show that awareness is not the same as ownership. But the cited data do not establish a single global Bitcoin acceptance percentage, a comprehensive current count of merchants accepting Bitcoin, or a Bitcoin-specific U.S. household payment rate. The sound conclusion is narrower: Bitcoin appeals to some people because of its design and because particular recipients may want it, while broad everyday acceptance is not demonstrated by these figures.
