NASA’s technical record gives the transport rate as 336 feet per minute at 24 frames per second, while IMAX’s 15/70 Filmmaker’s Manual describes the camera as considerably louder than an Arriflex 35mm camera. That mechanical noise can make quiet dialogue difficult to record cleanly on set.
What makes a traditional IMAX camera loud?
The main cause is the film transport: 15/70 film moves rapidly through a large camera mechanism. NASA’s 1992 technical record for the 12-IML-1 camera states that film travels at 336 feet per minute when the camera runs at the standard 24 frames per second. NASA Technical Reports Server

IMAX’s 15/70 Filmmaker’s Manual describes the camera as considerably louder than an Arriflex 35mm camera. The available technical information does not break down how much noise comes from the motor, shutter, magazine, or other individual parts, and it does not establish a decibel rating. A camera operating near actors can be picked up by production microphones. The noise is especially troublesome in quiet scenes, where clean synchronized dialogue matters; the manual discusses limits on usable sync sound. It is therefore a practical sound-recording constraint, not simply a matter of the camera being conspicuously loud to people nearby.
#1 Best Overall
- 📷 Film-saving: You can have twice as many images per roll. For example, a film roll with 36 exposures can yield around 72 half-frame photos - doubled!
- 📷 Lightweight and Easy-to-use: The pocket-size camera is light and tiny, and hence convenient for you to bring along daily. Since its instructions are simple, it is suitable for all analog hobbyists.
- 📷 Built-in Flash: Turning on the flash by adjusting the silver ring around the lens so that you can use KODAK EKTAR H35 during days and nights, outdoor and indoor.
- 📷 Perfect for Beginners: The point-and-shoot camera is easy to use for new analogue hobbyists.
- 📷 Five colors: Off-white, black, brown, sage and sand. Neat and natural.
How do productions work around the noise?
Use another camera for dialogue when needed
For Oppenheimer, cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema described using a System 65 camera for dialogue, and sometimes shooting additional IMAX takes when the director could make the sound work. This lets a production use a more workable camera for dialogue while reserving IMAX for scenes where its image is especially wanted or the sound conditions permit it. Filmmaker Magazine’s 2023 interview with Hoyte van Hoytema
Enclose the camera in a blimp
A blimp is a sound-reducing enclosure around the camera. It can reduce noise reaching the set, but makes the camera system substantially larger and heavier. IMAX’s 15/70 manual gives a weight of 275 pounds for a blimped 2D camera. That figure describes the system in the manual, not every IMAX camera setup.

What has changed with newer IMAX film systems?
In July 2026, the Associated Press reported that Christopher Nolan and IMAX developed a newer Keighley camera-and-blimp system after Oppenheimer, in preparation for The Odyssey. AP described The Odyssey as the first feature shot entirely on IMAX film. The enclosed system reportedly weighed about 300 pounds, and the film needed reloading every two-and-a-half to three minutes. These are details of that reported setup, not universal specifications for IMAX film cameras; they also do not show that the new enclosure eliminates camera noise. Associated Press, July 2026

Even when a blimp helps with sound, the equipment’s weight and short film run time impose operational constraints. The 275-pound and approximately 300-pound figures come from different systems and sources, so they should not be read as a direct test or a like-for-like measure of a design change.
