These are four failure paths described in a StorageReview report dated August 30, 2026, about an ASHRAE TC 9.9 bulletin; they are not universal failure rates or one-size-fits-all remedies. The right coolant and pressure limits depend on the specific IT equipment and system design.
Where the facility loop ends and the IT loop begins
A coolant distribution unit (CDU) commonly transfers heat from the facility water system (FWS) to a separate technology cooling system (TCS). The TCS carries coolant to IT equipment, including cold plates, through components such as manifolds, hoses, tubes, valves, quick disconnects, sensors, and controls.

That boundary matters because the facility loop and the equipment loop do different jobs. ASHRAE’s 2019 paper Water-Cooled Servers: Common Designs, Components, and Processes distinguishes their water-quality requirements and warns against applying facility-water guidance to the technology side. Cold plates and internal IT passages are sensitive to corrosion, scale, fouling, microbial issues, and other water-quality problems.

| System | What it serves | What to use as its basis |
|---|---|---|
| Facility water system (FWS) | Building-side cooling and the CDU heat exchanger | Facility-water guidance appropriate to the site and applicable ASHRAE edition |
| Technology cooling system (TCS) | CDU secondary piping and IT equipment, including cold plates | Technology-cooling guidance plus the specific IT manufacturer’s requirements |
The table is a boundary, not a substitute for an engineering specification: values and treatment choices must be checked against the relevant ASHRAE edition, site water, system design, and IT equipment requirements.

Four ways the TCS can leave its design basis
ASHRAE’s committee publication list confirms a 2026 TCS coolant-integrity bulletin. The operational details below are those reported by StorageReview on August 30, 2026; they should be read as that report’s account of the bulletin, not as a universal code or installation instruction.
1. Coolant formulation changes
Changing a blend or adding makeup fluid can alter viscosity, density, specific heat, and thermal conductivity. Those property changes can affect pressure drop, pump operating point, heat-exchanger effectiveness, and CDU control. A fluid that still circulates may therefore behave differently from the fluid used to design and commission the loop.

The reported guidance is to meet applicable ASHRAE minimum water-quality guidance or the IT manufacturer’s specification, and to obtain technical review before mixing coolants without confirming compatibility and performance effects. A nominal mixture mentioned in a secondary account is not a universal recipe; use the formulation specified for the particular equipment and loop.

2. Air remains in the loop or enters later
Entrained air can reduce heat transfer, contribute to pump cavitation, accelerate corrosion, and extend commissioning. Air-related symptoms may not be obvious at initial startup: the report says degassing can be more effective at elevated temperatures that might occur only when the system is carrying substantial load.

Separator placement, venting, and high-point geometry affect how air is removed. Treat those as project-specific design and commissioning details rather than applying a generic layout. An air-related problem that appears after the loop reaches steady operating temperatures should be investigated as a possible change in operating conditions, not dismissed because the system initially ran.
3. Fabricated stainless steel is not properly passivated
Welding, grinding, and field work can damage stainless steel’s protective surface film. The report says free iron can then enter the coolant and foul cold-plate microchannels. A single untreated installed component may put the wider loop at risk, so fabrication and field-work quality can matter well beyond the part being worked on.

Passivation and cleaning requirements must be set for the materials, fabrication process, and applicable project specifications. Do not infer a chemical treatment procedure from this failure description; the appropriate procedure is not established as universal.
4. Pressure limits overlook operating states
A loop’s pressure design needs to account for more than normal circulation. The report describes reviewing the pressure cascade across normal operation, flushing and filling, static height, relief settings, expansion-tank precharge, and connection or disconnection transients. Pressure testing and relief-valve selection also need to fit the system design and applicable standards.

The maximum working pressure published for the IT equipment is a key constraint, but it does not by itself define a single setting for every part of the loop. No blanket pressure limit or relief setting applies to all TCS installations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to verify in design, commissioning, and operation
The report describes several practices that can help preserve the intended fluid condition and make deviations easier to identify. These are checks to incorporate into the site’s engineering and operating plan, not a stand-alone service procedure.
- Record the design-basis coolant specification in turnover documents so the intended fluid is clear to operators and service teams.
- Verify coolant concentration and quality at initial fill, after significant makeup-fluid additions, and periodically according to the project plan.
- After vacuum filling, check that the blend is uniform rather than assuming the system is homogeneous.
- Coordinate site-specific water treatment and monitoring with qualified water-management specialists. ASHRAE’s 2019 paper notes that installation and service can introduce contaminants, and that larger systems may increase contamination risks and create stagnant branches.
- Consider TCS-side filtration as a means of mitigating particulates introduced during commissioning or service, while sizing and specifying it for the actual loop.
- Account for CDU controls that maintain coolant above room dew point; ASHRAE Handbook guidance identifies condensation as a risk if liquid systems are not properly controlled.
- Include the liquid-cooling system’s resilience and redundancy requirements in the project design rather than treating the CDU as an isolated component.
Why the equipment specification remains decisive
ASHRAE guidance helps distinguish the facility and technology loops and frames the risks, but it does not replace the requirements for the specific IT equipment, system design, or applicable code. Confirm coolant chemistry, material compatibility, working pressure, and operating limits against the equipment maker’s documentation and the engineered design before changing fluids or settings.
