Why Do Deep-Sea Rocks Catch Fire When Brought to the Surface?

The “burning rock” phenomenon is usually methane hydrate, an ice-like water-and-methane solid. Falling pressure during ascent releases methane gas that can ignite at the surface; ordinary rock is not the fuel.

Usually, the “rock” is not ordinary rock at all. The material shown burning in deep-sea demonstrations is typically methane hydrate, an ice-like solid in which water molecules form a cage around methane. When a hydrate-bearing nodule or sediment reaches surface pressure and temperature, the solid can break down and release methane gas. If that gas is ignited, it produces the visible flame. The mineral grains are not the fuel.

This distinction explains both the dramatic video and its limits: only hydrate-bearing material can behave this way, some samples lose their methane before reaching the surface, and a flame demonstration does not by itself prove that large quantities of methane enter the atmosphere.

What is actually burning?

Methane hydrate is also called gas hydrate or “fire ice.” It is a solid lattice of water molecules that traps natural gas, chiefly methane, inside microscopic cage-like structures. In nature, hydrate forms where methane and water coexist under the right combination of high pressure and low temperature, including sediments beneath deep ocean water.

A piece retrieved from the seabed may look like a pale nodule, a chunk of sediment, or an ordinary rock coated with ice-like material. That appearance leads to the shorthand “deep-sea rock catches fire.” Scientifically, however, the combustible component is methane released from the hydrate. Sand, clay, shell fragments, and other minerals in the surrounding sediment do not become flammable simply because they spent time underwater.

NOAA’s educational resource demonstrates that a methane-hydrate nodule can burn when lit, much like a lantern wick. The flame is methane gas escaping from the hydrate and mixing with oxygen at the surface, not a fire inside a conventional stone.

Why can methane and water form a solid?

At the seafloor, pressure from the overlying ocean and sediment can be high enough, while temperatures remain low enough, for the water-and-methane lattice to stay intact. The hydrate is therefore stable only within a particular pressure–temperature range. Move it outside that range and the structure begins to dissociate: the water lattice breaks apart and methane is freed as gas.

The deep ocean provides the combination that matters. Pressure increases with depth, while cold seawater and buried sediment help keep temperatures low. Methane generated by biological activity or by geological processes can migrate through pore spaces and become trapped in hydrate-bearing layers. The result is a solid that stores methane in a compact form even though methane itself is gaseous at surface conditions.

Hydrate is not the same thing as frozen methane. Methane molecules are enclosed by a framework of water molecules; the water supplies the solid cage and methane occupies the interior. That arrangement is why a hydrate sample can look and feel like ice while containing a large amount of natural gas.

What changes as a sample rises?

An ascent through the water column removes the conditions that stabilized the hydrate. Pressure falls continuously as depth decreases. Temperature can also rise as the sample leaves cold seafloor surroundings and approaches warmer water or the air. Once the pressure–temperature combination is outside the hydrate-stability zone, methane begins to escape.

  1. Deep-sea stability: The hydrate remains solid while pressure and temperature stay within its stability range.
  2. Early dissociation: During ascent, the outer surface may begin breaking down and releasing methane bubbles.
  3. Progressive loss: Smaller pieces can lose their methane faster because they have more surface area relative to their volume.
  4. Surface exposure: Any hydrate that survives to the surface can continue dissociating rapidly, supplying methane gas that may burn if an ignition source is present.

Not every piece completes this journey intact. A sample can partially dissociate in the water column, leaving ordinary sediment and water behind. The fact that one spectacular piece burns does not mean that all hydrate recovered from the same area will do so.

Why does the released gas make a flame?

Combustion requires fuel, oxygen, and an ignition source. Methane released from hydrate supplies the fuel. At the surface, methane mixes with air, and a match, lighter, or laboratory igniter supplies the initial energy. The resulting flame can make the hydrate appear to be a candle or lantern.

The visible behavior depends on how quickly methane emerges. A nodule that is still releasing gas can sustain a flame for a period of time, while a piece that has already lost most of its methane may not light at all. The flame therefore indicates continuing gas release, not a permanent property of the mineral matrix.

Lighting a specimen also changes the chemistry at its surface. Combustion consumes methane in the gas phase; it does not set the water lattice or the surrounding rock grains on fire. As dissociation continues, the hydrate becomes less compact and eventually leaves water and sediment rather than a combustible “rock.”

What did the transit experiment show?

A controlled study by Brewer and colleagues, published in Geophysical Research Letters in 2002, measured what happened to gas-hydrate pieces moved through the ocean water column. The experiment is useful because it tests survival during transit instead of assuming that every recovered piece behaves alike.

Observation What it means
Pieces initially about 0.10 metres across survived transit to the surface ocean. Hydrate can remain present long enough to be observed at the surface under some experimental conditions.
Smaller pieces dissociated before reaching the surface. Size affects heat and mass transfer; a small piece can lose its methane before arrival.
The result came from a specific controlled experiment. About 0.10 metres is not a universal survival threshold for every hydrate deposit, route, or recovery method.

The experiment does not say that all 10-centimetre samples will survive, nor that larger samples are guaranteed to burn. Shape, cracks, surrounding sediment, ascent speed, water temperature, and the sample’s initial condition can all alter the outcome. Its central lesson is narrower: hydrate stability during recovery is a physical process, and sample size can determine whether any hydrate remains when the material reaches the surface.

How much methane is stored in hydrate?

The U.S. Department of Energy states that “when brought to the earth’s surface, one cubic meter of gas hydrate releases 164 cubic meters of natural gas.” That is a surface-volume comparison for methane-rich gas released from a unit volume of hydrate; it is not a claim that every field or specimen contains exactly that amount under every measurement method.

The figure helps explain why a relatively small-looking nodule can produce a conspicuous stream of bubbles or support a flame. In the deep ocean, pressure keeps the methane confined within the hydrate structure. At the surface, the gas occupies far more volume, so dissociation can visibly expand the material into bubbles and froth.

Gas volume also depends on the conditions used to define “surface” gas, such as pressure and temperature. The DOE figure should therefore be read with its stated basis and attribution, not converted into an estimate of the methane content of an unmeasured rock or sediment sample.

Why ordinary deep-sea rocks do not catch fire

Most rocks recovered from the ocean floor contain minerals, pore water, and perhaps organic matter, but no concentrated methane hydrate. They may be wet, dark, or coated with biological growth; none of those traits makes them flammable. A normal basalt fragment, shell-rich sediment, or manganese nodule will not produce a methane flame merely because it was brought up from depth.

Material or condition What happens during ascent Can it support the famous flame?
Ordinary mineral rock Pressure drops and temperature changes, but the mineral itself is not a methane fuel. No, unless combustible material has been added separately.
Hydrate-bearing sediment or nodule Hydrate can dissociate and release methane as pressure falls. Possibly, if enough methane remains and it is ignited.
Hydrate that dissociated in transit Methane has escaped before recovery; remaining sediment may look ordinary. Usually not, because little fuel remains at the surface.

Calling every burning sample a “rock” obscures the diagnostic question: does it contain gas hydrate? Without that information, a photograph or video cannot establish what the specimen is made of.

Does a burning sample prove a climate threat?

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, so hydrate breakdown is relevant to climate science. But the visible fire demonstration answers only a local question—whether methane is escaping from that specimen and can be ignited. It does not measure how much methane reaches the atmosphere from an entire hydrate deposit.

The U.S. Geological Survey has stated that most methane released from degrading hydrates does not reach the atmosphere. Gas can dissolve in seawater, be consumed by microbes, or remain trapped and oxidized before it reaches the air. The fraction that does escape depends on the depth of release, water-column conditions, rate of dissociation, and transport pathways.

Consequently, a burning nodule is evidence that hydrate contains methane and can release it under changed conditions. It is not, by itself, evidence of a sudden, massive atmospheric release or a specific future warming scenario. Those questions require measurements of hydrate inventories, dissociation rates, ocean chemistry, and atmospheric transport.

What scientists must control during recovery

Researchers trying to study intact hydrate have to preserve or document the conditions that govern its stability. A useful recovery plan accounts for the following:

  • Depth and pressure history: Record where the sample originated and how quickly pressure was reduced.
  • Temperature: Keep the sample cold when possible and measure warming during handling.
  • Sample size and shape: Note dimensions, cracks, exposed surfaces, and whether the piece is embedded in sediment.
  • Gas loss: Capture or measure methane released during ascent and transfer rather than relying on the final appearance.
  • Ignition safety: Treat any hydrate-bearing sample as a possible flammable-gas source and use controlled laboratory procedures.

A surface flame is dramatic but not a substitute for these measurements. The sample may have lost an unknown fraction of its methane before anyone lights it, so the flame cannot reveal the original hydrate volume on its own.

Common misconceptions, resolved

“Is the rock itself burning?”

No. In the demonstrations described by NOAA, methane released from hydrate is the fuel. Mineral grains in the sediment are not burning.

“Is fire ice just frozen methane?”

No. It is a water-molecule lattice containing methane. The water framework makes a solid under suitable deep-sea conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Will every hydrate sample burn at the surface?”

No. Some samples dissociate during ascent, and smaller pieces in the Brewer experiment did not reach the surface intact. A surviving piece still needs an ignition source and enough methane release to sustain a flame.

“Does a flame mean methane is pouring into the atmosphere?”

No. It demonstrates combustible methane at the specimen, not the atmospheric fate of methane from a whole deposit. USGS notes that most methane from degrading hydrates does not reach the atmosphere.

The short answer

Deep-sea “rocks” catch fire when they contain methane hydrate. As the material rises, falling pressure and changing temperature destabilize the hydrate and release methane. At the surface, that gas can mix with air and burn. Ordinary rocks do not become flammable, not every hydrate piece survives recovery, and the flame alone cannot quantify the climate impact of hydrate breakdown.
