Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Antivirus products often score highly because professional tests measure defined sets of threats and tasks that many major products handle well—not because any product is guaranteed to stop every threat. Scores can also bunch together when products perform similarly, and a strong result in one test does not necessarily predict performance on another operating system, computer or type of attack.
What does a professional antivirus score measure?
There is no single industry-wide antivirus score. Testing labs use different categories, scoring scales and award rules, so a score from one lab should not be compared numerically with a score from another.

AV-TEST combines protection, performance and usability
For its Windows home-user evaluations, AV-TEST awards up to six points in each of three categories: protection, performance and usability. That makes 18 points the maximum. Its seal starts at 10 points, while its “TOP PRODUCT” distinction starts at 17.5 points. A high total therefore reflects more than malware detection: system impact and disruptive false warnings or blockages also matter. See AV-TEST’s Windows home-user scoring and results.

AV-Comparatives’ annual consumer program includes Real-World Protection, Malware Protection, Advanced Threat Protection, Performance and False Positives. Its 2025 Top-Rated award required at least 90 points across the main series. That recognition is a composite within AV-Comparatives’ own program; it is not equivalent to an AV-TEST score. The lab’s 2025 summary report also names Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, ESET, G Data, Kaspersky and Norton as Top-Rated products for that year—not as universal or necessarily current winners.

Why do many products score highly?
Common test scenarios are often well covered
Real-world protection tests commonly examine malicious websites and download routes that could affect ordinary users. AV-Comparatives says it tries to include working drive-by exploits, which it says are usually well covered by major products; it identifies this as one reason scores can look relatively high. Its tests can also model users following malicious links or installing malware. The lab describes its approach in the July–October 2025 Real-World Protection Test.
This does not mean the test covers every way malware can reach a device. A real-world web test and a test of malware already on a computer, on removable storage or in a more advanced attack scenario answer different questions.
Rank #2
- THREAT DETECTION – Stay one step ahead. Suspicious links, risky sites, viruses, and scams, caught automatically before they reach you.
- PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.
- SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few easy clicks, and we'll automatically protect your info on public Wi‑Fi, every time you connect.
- GUIDED ACTION – Know what matters and what to do next. Clear alerts and simple guidance make it easy to take action.
- MORE THAN ANTIVIRUS – Scam protection, identity monitoring, VPN, web protection, and antivirus work together to protect you, all in one place.
Products can use several protective layers
Protection may come from URL blocking, content filtering, cloud reputation, machine-learning detection, behavior blocking, signatures and heuristics working together. One product might compensate for a weaker URL blocker with strong behavior protection. But no one layer covers every route: for example, blocking a malicious website does not protect against malware introduced from a USB drive or local network.

Signatures and heuristics can also help detect and remove files that were initially missed.

Small score differences may not represent a meaningful gap
Products that perform similarly can cluster near the top. AV-Comparatives cautions that too few samples may make apparent differences unrepresentative of actual protection. It uses many test cases and statistical clustering; products in the same cluster may be treated as equally effective when their false-positive rates are below the industry average. A precise-looking ranking can therefore suggest more certainty than the test supports.
Why false alarms affect the result
A product should not be rewarded for blocking legitimate files or actions as though every block were a successful detection. False alarms can interrupt normal use, and users may have to decide whether a warning is real. AV-Comparatives says a product with a high detection rate but more false alarms is not necessarily better than one with somewhat lower detection and fewer alarms. Its March 2026 Malware Protection Test considers false positives in its award rules, with high false-positive counts capable of reducing an award level.

- ONGOING PROTECTION Download instantly & install protection for your PC or Mac in minutes!
- ADVANCED SCAM PROTECTION Help spot hidden scams online. With the built-in Genie AI assistant, you’ll never wonder if a message or email is suspicious again.
- REAL-TIME PROTECTION Advanced security protects against existing and emerging malware threats, including ransomware and viruses, and it won’t slow down your device performance.
- SAFEGUARD YOUR PASSWORDS Easily create, store, and manage your passwords, credit card information and other credentials online in your own encrypted, cloud-based vault.
- 2 GB SECURE PC CLOUD BACKUP Help prevent the loss of photos and files due to ransomware or hard drive failures.
In its 2025 false-alarm tests, AV-Comparatives recorded 9 false positives for Kaspersky, 12 for Total Defense and 19 for Bitdefender across that year’s tests. These are historical totals from that lab’s 2025 testing, not current overall rankings or a guarantee about later versions. The figures appear in its 2025 summary report.
How to apply a lab result to your own computer
Check what was tested before treating a result as relevant to your setup. A lab result reflects a particular product version, platform, configuration, sample set and workload; it does not establish performance on every device or operating system.

| Comparison axis | What to check |
|---|---|
| Protection scenario | Was the test about web threats, malware already on a device or removable storage, or advanced threats? These are distinct test types. AV-Comparatives lists its consumer test series in its 2025 summary. |
| False positives | Did the product wrongly flag legitimate files, websites or actions, and did false alarms affect the award? Compare the protection and false-positive results together, not detection alone. See the March 2026 Malware Protection Test. |
| Performance | Check the test’s operating system, product version, hardware and activities. AV-Comparatives’ April 2026 low-end performance test covered listed products on Windows 11 64-bit and specified file, archive, installation, launch, download, web-browsing and UL Procyon tasks using an Intel Core i3, 8 GB of RAM and an SSD. The lab says these results indicate impact under those specific conditions, and advises users to assess performance on their own PCs. See its April 2026 Consumer Performance Test. |
| Usability | Look at warnings and blockages that might interfere with ordinary activity. AV-TEST includes usability as a separate scoring category in its Windows home-user evaluation. |
| Freshness and scope | Note the report date, tested product version and platform. A result from a past test cycle does not establish how a newer release performs; the April 2026 performance report, for example, applies to its listed Windows versions and test conditions. |
What high scores do—and do not—establish
The cited results concern Windows consumer security products and specific test periods. They do not establish how the same products perform on macOS, Android, in enterprise environments or against every category of threat. Even within a Windows suite, protective components can have uneven strengths, and a test covers only its chosen cases and conditions.
Use professional results as evidence about how a product performed in the stated tests. To compare candidates fairly, match the test period and platform, distinguish the threat scenarios, consider false alarms alongside protection, and treat close or clustered results cautiously.
