In experiments on selected ammonia and nitric-oxide collision systems, researchers measured a local maximum in inelastic collision cross-sections, followed by a decline as collision energy fell. The result points to a weakening of the effective dipole–dipole interaction at low energies—not to the disappearance of the molecules’ permanent dipole moments. The effect depends on the collision partners and their internal energy levels; it is not a universal switch that turns off every polar-molecule collision.
What “switch off” means in a molecular collision
A polar molecule can have a permanent dipole moment while its interaction with another molecule changes during a collision. In the systems studied, the molecules have closely spaced states of opposite parity. At shorter range, dipole–dipole coupling can mix those states, effectively polarizing the molecules during the encounter even without an applied electric field. The authors call this collision-induced effect self-polarization.

As collision energy decreases, the molecules’ classical turning point moves farther out. At that greater separation, dipole–dipole coupling is weaker, so it becomes less effective at mixing the opposite-parity states and sustaining the induced polarization. The measured inelastic cross-section then falls below the trend expected from classical capture. That reduced effective interaction is what the paper’s “switch off” language describes; the permanent dipoles themselves have not vanished.

Chang and colleagues report state-to-state inelastic collision measurements over 0.3–100 cm−1 for ammonia isotopologue pairs. They also used NO–NH3 measurements to show a local maximum in another collision system. Across the ammonia systems, the cross-sections follow the high-energy Langevin energy dependence before developing local maxima. The authors report that the maxima occur at higher collision energy when the combined parity splitting is larger.

The maximum is a measured feature of the cross-section, not evidence by itself of a resonance. The study’s interpretation—that weaker collision-induced mixing suppresses the effective dipole–dipole interaction at lower energy—is supported by coupled-channels scattering calculations that reproduce the cross-sections in good agreement. The primary paper in Nature Chemistry reports the measurements and calculations.
Different systems show different low-energy behavior
| Collision system | Reported observation | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| ND3–ND3 | Included in the ammonia measurements from 0.3 to 100 cm−1; a distinct low-energy cutoff is not stated in the reported summary. | Part of the set in which the cross-sections develop local maxima; its behavior should not be assigned another system’s low-energy threshold. |
| ND3–NH3 | A plateau appears below about 1 cm−1, alongside a secondary maximum. | The secondary maximum is associated with dipole–quadrupole coupling, which can become relatively more important as dipole–dipole coupling weakens. |
| NH3–NH3 | In the described data, signals became undetectable below 4 cm−1. | Undetectable signal is a limit of those measurements, not proof that the cross-section is zero below that energy. |
| NO–NH3 | Used as a complementary system to demonstrate a local maximum; a specific low-energy threshold is not stated. | It shows that the maximum is not confined to the ammonia-isotopologue examples, but does not establish a universal threshold. |
These are system-specific observations, not a single energy boundary that applies to all polar molecules. The relative importance of the interactions depends on properties such as parity splitting, dipole moment, reduced mass, and the collision energy.

Why the cross-section can rise again at still lower energy
The initial decline is not expected to continue all the way to zero energy. The authors describe Wigner threshold behavior, which predicts a later increase in the cross-section at still lower energies. A local maximum followed by suppression and a later threshold rise is therefore different from a cross-section that simply decreases monotonically to zero.

The energy ranges reached and the observed signal depend on the system and measurement. In particular, the reported undetectable NH3–NH3 signal below 4 cm−1 does not establish what the cross-section does at every lower energy.

How the maximum shifts with parity splitting
The paper reports a dimensionless scaling for the primary-maximum energy: Epeak/Edd ∝ (Δ/Edd)4/3. Here, Δ is the combined parity splitting of the colliding molecules, and Edd is the dipolar energy scale. In practical terms, the location of the maximum is not set by one universal collision energy: it changes with the internal-state splitting and the dipolar scale.
The authors contrast this scaling with a linear dependence on Δ in an earlier classical Langevin model. That earlier relation is a model comparison, not an experimental measurement. The newer scaling accounts for the relevant dimensionless dipolar and mass scales.

How the team tested the explanation
The work combines crossed and merged molecular-beam methods with state-resolved integral and differential cross-section measurements. The apparatus included Stark deceleration, curved hexapole guiding, and a beam-merging device. Velocity-map imaging of correlated recoil and energy transfer helped distinguish collision channels in which both partners changed parity from channels in which only one partner did.
Those measurements establish the cross-section maxima and recoil patterns; the account of weakened self-polarization is the authors’ interpretation of those observations, tested against coupled-channels calculations. Keeping that distinction matters: the experiment supports a mechanism for the suppression, rather than directly measuring a permanent dipole switching off.

What the result does—and does not—say about control
The study discusses sensitivity to applied electric fields and dynamic control as possible directions for further work. The reported maxima were not produced by applying an external field, and the experiment does not demonstrate field-based control. Its immediate result is evidence that the effective interaction and inelastic scattering can vary strongly with collision energy and with the molecules’ parity structure.
