A shallow checkout can make a Git-based versioning tool lose the tag and commit history it needs to calculate a release version. But shallow history alone does not explain why a build reports exactly 0.1.0: that value depends on the project’s version configuration or fallback. Check both the fetched tags and the available commit ancestry, then inspect the versioning tool’s own diagnostic.
How a shallow checkout can change a generated version
Git’s --depth option creates a shallow clone by limiting history to a specified number of commits. Unless --no-single-branch is used, it also implies single-branch mode. A versioning tool that derives a version from the nearest reachable release tag and the number of commits since that tag may therefore lack the information it normally uses.

Tags are a separate issue from commit depth. Some CI services limit history and omit tags to save bandwidth. PyScaffold’s version 4.3.1 FAQ describes both conditions in setuptools-scm workflows as possible reasons for an unknown or unexpected version: PyScaffold FAQ.
When the expected tag or ancestry is unavailable, the tool may use a configured fallback or a version explicitly set elsewhere in the project. That can result in 0.1.0, but the number is not a universal Git response to shallow clones.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Find out why this project reports 0.1.0
Identify the version source and fallback
First determine which versioning tool the build runs and where the project configures its version. Check the build configuration, packaging metadata, and versioning-tool settings for an explicit value or fallback. Then read the build log to see whether the tool found a tag, calculated a version, or switched to a fallback. Without the project’s configuration and logs, the exact source of 0.1.0 cannot be established.
Check whether tags and ancestry are available
For a setuptools-scm project, PyScaffold recommends checking the Git description with:

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
git describe --dirty --tags --long --first-parent
This helps show what tag-based description is available in the checkout. If the expected tags are missing, try fetching them:
git fetch origin --tags
Then rerun the project’s version diagnostic. Fetching tags alone is useful only if the checkout already contains enough commit ancestry to relate the current commit to the release tag.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Choose the smallest checkout change that restores the calculation
There are two independent requirements: the relevant release tag must be present, and the ancestry back to that tag must be available. Diagnose both before changing CI settings.
- Tag missing, history sufficient: fetch the tags and verify that the version diagnostic now finds the expected release tag.
- Ancestry missing: deepen the history or use a complete clone, then verify that the required tag is present as well.
Git documents git fetch --unshallow for removing shallow limitations when the remote repository is complete:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
git fetch --unshallow
Do not assume that deepening history also fetches tags for the newly available commits. Git’s fetch documentation treats these as separate concerns, so check both after changing the checkout: Git fetch documentation.
Check the CI provider’s checkout setting
CI providers expose their own controls for clone depth; the relevant setting and its default depend on the provider and project configuration. For example, AWS CodeBuild documents a Git clone depth setting with a Full option for a full clone. If the project uses CodeBuild, inspect that setting; for another provider, consult its documentation rather than assuming the same control or default applies. Why a shallow-clone failure can look different across projects
The exact symptom depends on the versioning logic. In one example, Essentia’s setup script uses git describe --always --tags. Its comments note that a shallow checkout with no reachable tags can produce a bare commit SHA rather than the expected tag-and-commit form; the script checks whether the expected commit-count component exists before using it. This illustrates a possible failure mode, not evidence about another project’s configuration: Essentia setup script.
Similarly, PyScaffold’s FAQ discusses unknown versions and the unexpected 0.0.post0.dev50 form; it does not establish that shallow history always produces 0.1.0. Use your own build logs and version diagnostic to connect the checkout state to the reported value.
