Why Did Old Fire Trucks Have No Roofs?

Open crew areas carried forward horse-drawn fire-engine layouts and made quick dismounting easier, but exposed firefighters to weather and road hazards. Enclosed cabs emerged gradually, with open and closed designs coexisting.

Many older fire trucks had open crew areas because their layouts carried forward seating arrangements from horse-drawn fire engines. Open sides made it easier for firefighters to dismount quickly, but left them exposed to weather and road hazards. Enclosed cabs appeared gradually as designers gave crew protection more weight; open and closed designs overlapped rather than changing everywhere on one date.

Why did old fire trucks have no roofs?

The vehicles were not necessarily uncovered everywhere. “Roofless” usually refers to the crew area or body: firefighters might ride on exposed seats along the sides or rear, while equipment was stored elsewhere on the vehicle.

That layout had roots in manual fire engines. The Museum of Fire describes early engines carrying both equipment and firefighters, with crew members seated along the sides and equipment stored below. It calls this the Braidwood style and says the arrangement shaped fire-engine design for more than a century. Motorization added greater range and motor-driven pumps, but did not immediately replace exposed seating. Museum of Fire: Illustrating Change

The London Fire Brigade traces the outward-facing crew arrangement on its Dennis Big 4 to horse-drawn fire engines dating to 1820. That date marks the seating tradition cited by the Brigade, not the first roofless fire engine. London Fire Brigade: Dennis “Big 4”

What did an open layout make easier?

Getting off quickly

With no enclosed cab or doors in the way, firefighters could dismount directly from their seats. Quick access mattered when crews needed to move from the vehicle to the incident. The Science Museum Group describes open bodies as having this practical advantage. Science Museum Group: 1936 Leyland fire-engine model

Keeping to a familiar arrangement

Motorized fire appliances inherited a body layout that had developed around earlier engines. The continued use of exposed seating reflects that design history as well as the value placed on access; the evidence does not establish visibility or tradition as the sole reason for keeping crews outside.

What were the disadvantages of riding without a roof?

Open-riding firefighters had little protection from rain, cold, or collision hazards. As motor engines took crews farther from their stations, concern about protecting riders grew. The trade-off was not simply between an old-fashioned and a modern appearance: enclosure offered protection, while designers still had to preserve fast access and make room for equipment. When did fire trucks start getting enclosed cabs?

Enclosure arrived in stages, and the documented examples do not establish a single worldwide changeover date.

  • 1930: An enclosed body was built for Edinburgh Fire Brigade, according to the Science Museum Group.
  • Within 20 years after 1930: The Science Museum Group says enclosed bodies had become usual for new appliances. This describes a broad design trend, not the date every fleet adopted enclosed cabs.
  • Late 1940s: NSW fire-brigade designers experimented with ways to protect crews while keeping access practical. The Museum of Fire reports that experimental Scout Cars had reduced storage and distracting side-window reflections. A later “New World” arrangement paired an enclosed front cabin with inward-facing rear seating, intended to improve protection while allowing a quick exit.

The Science Museum Group’s description of its 1936 Leyland model puts the transition in context: “For many years the standard type of fire-engine body in Britain was completely open.” Science Museum Group: 1936 Leyland fire-engine model

Why did open and closed designs coexist?

Departments and vehicles did not all adopt the same arrangement at once. Heritage NSW, for example, lists both an open-cab and a closed-cab 1942 Morris Magirus turntable ladder in its heritage fleet. This is a reminder that the transition varied by vehicle and service rather than following one universal timetable. Heritage NSW: Fire and Rescue NSW Heritage Fleet

In practice, enclosing a crew meant balancing protection against the needs of the job. The NSW experiments show some of the design questions involved: a cabin could protect riders, but windows could create reflections and enclosed seating could affect storage. Designers also had to retain a quick way for firefighters to leave the vehicle.
