Power goes out when electricity can no longer reach customers through part of the grid. A fault or damage on a neighborhood distribution line may affect a small area; a disturbance involving transmission or generation can reach much farther. Restoration depends on what failed and how much of the system is affected, so there is no universal repair order or reliable timeline for every outage.
Why did my power go out?
Electricity travels from generators over high-voltage transmission lines and through local distribution networks to homes and businesses. An outage occurs when a part of that system cannot deliver power. The cause may be close to your home or elsewhere in the grid.

Local faults and physical damage
Many outages involve local distribution equipment. A tree limb can fall on a line, lightning can strike a substation, or a vehicle can knock down a utility pole. Equipment problems and other physical damage can also interrupt service. These events may affect one circuit or a limited neighborhood rather than the wider grid. FERC’s Reliability Explainer describes examples of storm-related damage and explains the distinction between distribution and transmission.

Outages can also involve generation or transmission, affecting system operation beyond a single neighborhood. Grid reliability includes withstanding sudden disturbances and having enough resources to meet demand. Operators monitor conditions and balance supply and demand in real time; that work helps keep the overall system operating, but it does not prevent every local equipment failure. FERC’s overview of grid reliability explains these related responsibilities.

How do power crews restore electricity?
Control-room operators manage wider system conditions and coordinate the grid response. Field crews inspect and repair damaged equipment. Those jobs are connected, but restoring a local distribution circuit is not the same task as recovering transmission or generation across a large area.
Local distribution outages
For a local outage, the utility must identify the affected equipment and address the fault or damage before service can be restored. The exact sequence depends on the utility, the cause, and the conditions crews find. Utilities plan for severe events and mobilize crews under their response and recovery procedures, but there is no single numbered repair sequence used everywhere.

Widespread system outages
A major bulk-system outage can require coordination among multiple organizations. Some generating resources have blackstart capability: they can start without power from the rest of the bulk system and help re-energize it. That is part of a broader recovery process, not a description of how every neighborhood outage is repaired. A 2016 FERC and NERC staff report discusses restoration planning and recovery practices.

The time depends on the cause, location, extent of damage, and scale of the event. A repair affecting one distribution circuit differs from a disturbance involving transmission or generation; a widespread event may also require coordination across multiple entities. Because utilities use their own procedures and crews must assess actual conditions, a general explanation cannot establish a restoration time for a particular address. Check your electric utility’s outage map or status service for current local updates and its estimated restoration time.

What U.S. outage statistics can—and can’t—tell you
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported an average of 11 hours of electricity interruptions per customer in 2024. That national average is not a prediction of how long any individual customer will be without power. EIA also reported that Hurricanes Beryl, Helene, and Milton accounted for 80% of the hours without electricity that year, showing how a few major events can strongly affect annual totals. EIA’s 2025 analysis provides those figures.
Three reliability measures
| Measure | What it describes |
|---|---|
| SAIDI | Minutes of non-momentary interruption per customer per year; a measure of total interruption duration. |
| SAIFI | Number of non-momentary interruptions per customer per year; a measure of frequency. |
| CAIDI | Average minutes needed to restore a non-momentary interruption. |
EIA’s Electric Power Annual, Table 11.3, reports state reliability data for 2023 and 2024. Its “any method” figures combine utilities using IEEE methods with those that do not. Major-event days are treated differently by method, and customer coverage is an estimate that can vary. For a meaningful comparison between states or years, check the period, the method, and whether major events are included; an annual average is not a forecast for a particular place.

Who oversees which part of the grid?
In the United States, local distribution oversight generally falls to state or local public utility commissions, while FERC’s reliability jurisdiction primarily concerns the bulk power system. Transmission and distribution are distinct parts of the grid, though a problem in one can affect customer service through the other. The scale of the outage therefore matters both for how the system responds and which authorities have oversight.
