Why Developers Run Out of Disk Space on macOS—and What to Check First

Projects, downloaded tools, caches and temporary files can crowd a developer’s Mac. Here’s how to check storage and choose safe cleanup steps.

Developer Macs can run low on disk space as projects, apps, downloaded development components, caches and temporary data accumulate. Some of this appears in macOS as System Data, a broad category whose contents change with the Mac’s current state—not a folder of disposable files. Check Storage settings first, then remove only data you recognize and no longer need, or move files you want to keep to external storage.

Why development work can use so much storage

A development workflow can leave data in several places: project files, application support folders, downloaded tool components, caches and temporary files. Some data is needed for current work; some can be recreated or downloaded again. Apple’s description of System Data includes caches, logs, virtual memory files, temporary files, fonts, app-support files, plug-ins and runtime resources. That helps explain why storage use may not map neatly to a category such as Documents or Applications, but it does not make every item in System Data safe to erase.

Apple’s developer guidance says apps should put recoverable content in caches or temporary directories, which macOS can purge when it detects low storage. Apple also documents that Xcode Organizer can report storage metrics for an app across releases, and that downloadable Xcode components such as simulators are among the content types that macOS caching can store locally. These sources establish that developer workflows can involve generated and downloaded data; they do not establish typical storage requirements for a developer’s Mac.

What “System Data” means—and what it does not

System Data is a managed category, not a specific folder or a diagnosis of what is wrong. Apple says its contents are managed by macOS and its displayed size varies with the current state of the Mac. Storage settings do not let you select and delete the category as a whole. To investigate data that does not appear under another category, use Finder or the app that created it.

  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Likewise, a large System Data figure does not prove that caches are the cause, or that everything counted there is junk. Some files are necessary for the system or apps to operate. Identify individual files and their purpose before removing them.

Check storage before deleting anything

  1. Open the Storage view. On macOS Ventura 13 or later, choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. On earlier macOS releases, choose Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage. Apple documents these paths in Change Storage settings on Mac. Allow the view time to populate.
  2. Review the categories and large files. Look for familiar items such as Applications, Documents, Downloads, device backups, media and the Bin. Check files in Finder or the app that owns them when you need more detail.
  3. Distinguish available storage from immediately free storage. Apple notes that the available-space figure can include purgeable storage—space macOS can free when needed. The numbers in the Storage view and the available-space figure may therefore differ.

Choose a cleanup action based on what the data is

Data type What to consider Practical action
Files you recognize and no longer need They may be personal or project files rather than system-managed data. Delete them through Finder or the app that created them. Moving a file to the Bin does not free its space until you empty the Bin.
Downloads, unused apps, old device backups or media Apple lists these as examples of content that may be removable; consider whether you can download, reinstall or stream it again. Remove only items you no longer need. For files to retain, move them to another storage device.
Caches and temporary files Some are recoverable, but an individual file’s purpose is not established just by its size or location. Let macOS manage safe caches and logs where possible; Apple says it may clear them when storage is needed. Avoid deleting an entire cache or support directory without knowing what uses it.
System Data This is a broad, variable category managed by macOS, not a cleanup target you can erase from Storage settings. Investigate individual files through Finder or the app that created them instead of trying to remove the category wholesale.

When keeping files matters more than freeing them permanently

If files are useful but do not need to live on the internal drive, move selected items to an external storage device. Apple recommends external storage as an option for files such as media. An external SSD can preserve access to those files while freeing internal capacity, but it will not itself clear caches or reduce all System Data.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Apple’s cited documentation does not publish a representative gigabyte figure for Xcode, simulator data, containers, package-manager caches or other developer workloads on a Mac. Actual use depends on what is installed and retained, so a single “typical developer” number would be misleading. Use the Storage view and inspect your own files rather than assuming a particular tool is responsible.
