When investors expect those drivers to weaken, they may lower expectations for several companies at once. A shared share-price decline, however, does not prove that every company’s business is weakening—or identify why prices moved on a particular day.
Why a change in expectations can affect several stocks
Heavy equipment is expensive, and customers often buy it to support projects or expand capacity. If a project is delayed, expected machine use falls, credit gets harder to obtain, or uncertainty makes new capacity seem risky, a contractor or fleet owner may postpone an order. Lower or later orders can affect manufacturers’ expected production, dealer sales, and inventory.

Caterpillar’s annual-report risk disclosure describes demand for its products and services as cyclical. It says demand can be significantly reduced during economic weakness, including when government and business investment, business confidence, or credit activity decline, or when real interest rates and credit constraints rise. The company also identifies the risk that inventory may not match demand. These are shared economic channels, not evidence that every manufacturer has the same exposure.
Interest rates can matter in several ways at once. They can weigh on construction and other investment, make it more expensive for customers to finance equipment, and encourage owners to keep existing machines longer rather than replace them. The eventual impact depends on the project pipeline, customer finances, and how much equipment is already in use.

Share prices may react to a change in expectations before reported sales or earnings do. Investors can revise views about future orders, production, or risk across several manufacturers at once. That general mechanism does not establish that the stocks have a particular measured correlation, or explain a specific synchronized decline.
Which shared drivers matter—and where they differ
| Driver | How it can affect equipment demand | Why companies may respond differently |
|---|---|---|
| Construction and infrastructure | Major projects and public spending can support demand for heavy construction equipment. Residential and commercial building also matter, particularly for light construction equipment. | Manufacturers differ in their mix of heavy civil, residential, commercial, compact, and roadbuilding equipment, as well as in regional exposure. |
| Financing and interest rates | Higher borrowing costs or tighter credit can make purchases less affordable and reduce customers’ willingness to add or replace machines. | Customer types, purchase financing arrangements, and reliance on rental fleets or dealers vary. |
| Mining, energy, agriculture, forestry, and power | Investment in these industries can create demand for equipment outside ordinary building construction. | A manufacturer with significant sales in one of these markets may not track a construction-focused peer closely. |
| Backlog and replacement timing | Projects already in the pipeline can support near-term orders; owners can also delay replacement if existing fleets remain adequate. | Backlog size, project timing, and the age and utilization of customers’ fleets differ. |
| Business mix | Equipment sales are only one source of activity for some manufacturers; parts, services, engines, power systems, or other machinery can also matter. | A company with more recurring parts and services revenue may have different sensitivity from one more dependent on new equipment orders. |
CNH’s 2025 annual report distinguishes these demand channels: it ties heavy construction equipment sales primarily to expected major infrastructure construction and repair projects, government spending, and economic growth. It links light construction equipment sales to residential and commercial construction, interest rates, and financing availability. That distinction helps explain why a change in housing activity need not affect every equipment maker in the same way as a shift in public infrastructure plans.

Why companies in the same sector can diverge
“Construction and heavy equipment” is not a single business. To understand why two stocks move differently—or whether a broad decline reflects a common concern—compare the companies’ actual exposures:

- Geography and public funding: Project pipelines, government spending, and economic conditions differ by region.
- Backlog and replacement cycles: A strong backlog can support near-term activity, while delayed fleet replacement can change future demand.
- Other businesses: Engines, power systems, mining or agricultural equipment, parts, and services can make a company’s overall results less dependent on construction-machine sales alone.
Deere’s 2026 construction and forestry outlook illustrates how several drivers can point in different directions within one manufacturer. The company projected U.S. and Canadian earthmoving and compact equipment industry sales to be flat to slightly higher, citing construction backlogs, infrastructure spending, and data-center construction starts while noting restraint in private commercial investment. It forecast global forestry markets to be flat and roadbuilding markets to remain flat at strong levels. These are company forecasts, not guaranteed outcomes, and they describe industry expectations rather than stock performance.

What recent company figures do—and do not—show
Company operating results can help test whether a broad claim of falling equipment demand fits the evidence, but they do not explain a stock move by themselves. Caterpillar’s 2025 annual report expected 2026 North American equipment sales to end users to grow moderately compared with 2025, with construction spending supported by infrastructure funding and data-center investment. That is management’s outlook, not a statement about share prices.
Caterpillar reported second-quarter 2026 sales and revenues of $20.5 billion, up 24% from the second quarter of 2025. On August 4, 2026, CEO Joe Creed said, “Strong order rates and a growing backlog reflect broadening momentum across all three of our primary segments.” Those company-specific results and comments are not proof that every equipment maker was growing, nor do they establish the direction of Caterpillar’s stock or the sector’s shares on any particular date.

How to assess a particular synchronized selloff
- Set the date and comparison window. Establish which stocks fell, by how much, and over what period. Without dated price performance, “fall together” is not a verifiable description of a specific event.
- Separate share prices from operations. Compare the move with dated company results, order or backlog updates, and changes in guidance. A share-price move can reflect revised expectations even when current sales remain strong.
- Look for a shared exposure. Check contemporaneous developments in construction and public spending, financing conditions, mining or energy investment, and broader economic expectations.
- Compare company mix before generalizing. Review each manufacturer’s end markets, regions, customer financing exposure, backlog, and non-construction businesses.
- Keep the conclusion proportionate to the evidence. A common price decline alone does not show that operations deteriorated, that all stocks have the same risk, or that one macroeconomic factor caused the move.
