Connor Hellebuyck was still suspended by the Winnipeg Jets and absent from the team’s official roster in a report dated October 2, 2026. The designation was a snapshot of his status at that time—not confirmation that he had been traded, released or had his contract terminated.
Why was Connor Hellebuyck a non-roster player?
The status followed Hellebuyck’s failure to report to Winnipeg’s training camp on September 17, 2026. The Jets suspended him, and GM Kevin Cheveldayoff said the club acted because Hellebuyck had failed to report under his standard player contract and the collective bargaining agreement (CBA). That is the team’s stated basis for the suspension, not an independent legal ruling. NHL.com reported the team’s explanation.
A CBS Sports/RotoWire report dated October 2 said Hellebuyck remained suspended and was not listed on the Jets’ official roster, citing the NHL media site. The report does not establish a permanent roster change or explain the NHL’s specific meaning for this entry.
How the situation unfolded
| Date | What was reported |
|---|---|
| August 27, 2026 | Hellebuyck publicly confirmed that he had requested a trade earlier in the offseason. NHL.com covered his statement. |
| September 17, 2026 | He did not report to Jets training camp, and Winnipeg suspended him for failure to report, according to the team’s account. |
| October 2, 2026 | CBS Sports/RotoWire reported that he remained suspended and was not on the official roster, citing the NHL media site. |
In the August 27 statement released by his agent, Ray Petkau, Hellebuyck said he had tried to handle the matter privately and that his position had not changed: he believed moving on was best for him and his family. The trade request is the context for the standoff; it does not itself mean a trade was completed.

Had Hellebuyck been traded?
The cited reports do not confirm a trade or another resolution after the October 2 roster update. Winnipeg said it was seeking the right resolution, but no destination, deal or completed roster move is established in those reports. The non-roster listing should therefore be read as a dated status report, not evidence of a trade or release.
Hellebuyck’s recent performance context
The roster news came after an exceptional 2024–25 season. NHL.com reported that Hellebuyck won the Hart Trophy and his third Vezina Trophy that season, going 47-12-3 with a 2.00 goals-against average, a .925 save percentage and eight shutouts in 63 games. Those figures are for 2024–25, not a later season.
