D1 charges for rows read, rows written and stored data; Durable Objects can also charge for requests and duration. A handful of queries can read millions of rows, and repeated migrations or alarm scheduling can generate substantial metered activity.
Start with the billable usage line and its time series, then narrow the spike to a database, query, migration or Durable Object behavior. Eight incidents described in a September 2026 roundup illustrate possible failure modes, but they are anecdotal reports—not a representative dataset or independently audited findings.

What Cloudflare meters—and why query count can mislead
D1 billing is based on rows read, rows written and stored data, rather than idle compute hours. Cloudflare’s D1 pricing documentation says, “You are not billed for hours or capacity units.” That statement is about compute billing, not a claim that all D1 usage is free. Cloudflare D1 pricing

For Workers Paid, Cloudflare’s 2026 pricing page lists monthly allowances of 25 billion rows read, 50 million rows written and 5 GB of storage. Above those allowances, it lists $0.001 per million rows read, $1.00 per million rows written and $0.75 per GB-month of storage. These are the figures shown on the pricing page at the time of writing; confirm the live rates and your account’s plan before estimating a bill, since pricing can change. Cloudflare D1 pricing
Rows read measure the database work, not simply how many SQL statements ran. A query that scans many rows and returns only a few can produce high read usage, so query volume and row-read totals answer different questions. D1 observability
Durable Objects have a different mix of meters: requests, duration and storage. SQLite-backed Durable Objects also use row-read, row-write and stored-data meters. Cloudflare documents alarm invocations as requests and SQLite setAlarm() calls as writes; an alarm loop that repeatedly schedules new alarms can therefore keep generating usage. What the eight reported cases suggest
A September 2026 roundup describes seven D1 incidents and one Durable Objects incident. It reports examples involving sitemap crawling, read overages, a prolonged rows-read issue, a large read count, migration or backfill activity, and an alarm loop. The roundup gives reported amounts from $176 to about $34,895 for some cases, while others have no stated amount. Its entries summarize public posts; the amounts are self-reported, the roundup does not link each underlying thread in its table, and the cases do not establish how common any failure mode is. Two separate posts offer more detail, but should be read as individual operators’ accounts rather than verified billing records:
- A May 2026 Reddit poster described an approximately $35,000 bill for a side project and reported 3.13 billion KV writes, 16.62 billion KV reads, 4.01 billion Durable Objects storage rows written and 574 million KV list operations. Those are the poster’s figures, not independently confirmed usage totals. May 2026 Reddit post
- A September 2026 Reddit poster described a D1 database migration and said a $10 budget alert displayed 8,274% of budget. The poster said they added a gate to stop a batch job above ten million rows written in a day. The account does not establish a final invoice or quantify savings from the gate. Treat these reports as prompts for investigation, not proof that a particular Cloudflare product or workload is inherently expensive. The relevant question is which meter rose in your account, and what code or traffic caused it.
How to trace a spike to its source
- Identify the meter. Start with the billable usage line and determine whether it is D1 rows read, rows written or storage, or a Durable Objects request, duration or storage measure. The relevant billing and usage views are described in D1 pricing and Durable Objects pricing.
- Compare the time series to a baseline. Use daily and month-to-date billable usage, then compare the shape and timing with a prior period. Cloudflare documents usage views and account billing controls; analytics history is limited, so keep an external time series if you need longer comparisons. Cloudflare billing documentation
- Drill down to the database and time window. For D1, inspect the database and the time period where usage increased using the dashboard or analytics API. Query counts alone cannot explain a row-read increase. D1 observability
- Inspect expensive reads and writes. Check query response metadata and compare high row-read counts with rows returned. Look at query plans for scans; an index or query rewrite may help when it fits the access pattern, but is not a universal fix. Also check for repeated writes from imports, migrations, backfills or application loops. D1 observability
- Check Durable Objects behavior where applicable. Compare request, duration and storage activity with alarm schedules and invocations. Review retries and rescheduling for conditions and bounds appropriate to the application. Durable Objects pricing
- Turn on notifications and keep watching. Configure native usage notifications for rows read and written, and review account-level billable usage regularly. Notifications help surface a change; they do not identify the responsible query or job by themselves. Cloudflare billing documentation
How to estimate an eventual D1 bill
For an account on Workers Paid, use the current included amounts and overage rates displayed by Cloudflare, and estimate each meter separately. For the 2026 figures listed above, a rough monthly overage calculation is:
- Rows read overage: (monthly billable rows read above 25 billion) ÷ 1,000,000 × $0.001.
- Rows written overage: (monthly billable rows written above 50 million) ÷ 1,000,000 × $1.00.
- Storage overage: billable storage above 5 GB, charged at $0.75 per GB-month.
This is an estimate using the stated Workers Paid allowances and listed rates, not a substitute for Cloudflare’s billable-usage view or current pricing page. Use the actual billable meter values and billing period in your account; do not extrapolate from SQL statement counts or assume a brief daily peak is equivalent to the monthly total. How D1 and Durable Objects differ for cost diagnosis
| Workload or storage model | Meters to investigate | What the workload can reveal |
|---|---|---|
| D1 | Rows read, rows written and stored data | A scan can drive row reads even when query count is low; migrations and backfills can increase writes. D1 pricing |
| SQLite-backed Durable Objects | Requests and duration, plus SQLite row reads, row writes and stored data | Alarm invocations count as requests, and SQLite setAlarm() calls count as writes. Durable Objects pricing |
| Key-value Durable Objects storage | Request-unit and storage metrics, as specified by Cloudflare’s current pricing page | Available meters and backend or plan availability depend on Cloudflare’s current pricing terms. Compare those terms with your workload rather than assuming one storage model costs less. Durable Objects pricing |
There is no universal lower-cost choice here: a comparison needs the workload’s reads, writes, request frequency, duration and storage, along with the applicable plan and backend pricing. Durable Objects pricing

How to prevent repeat spikes during jobs and alarms
Put limits around migrations and backfills
Make batch jobs observable while they run, monitor write usage, and set a workload-specific gate or stop condition when a daily or per-run limit is reached. The September migration poster’s ten-million-row daily gate is one operator’s response, not a Cloudflare feature or a generally safe threshold. Choose a limit based on the job and your budget, and test that stopping a batch leaves it safe to resume.
Bound alarm and retry behavior
For Durable Objects, inspect when alarms are set, how often they invoke, and whether each invocation schedules another. Ensure retries and rescheduling stop when their application conditions are satisfied, and set appropriate bounds for failure cases. Include the documented request and SQLite write effects of alarm behavior when reviewing usage. Durable Objects pricing
Preserve a useful baseline
Use Cloudflare’s daily and month-to-date usage views and notifications, and retain an external time series if the available analytics history does not cover the comparison period you need. A baseline makes it easier to distinguish a one-off deployment or traffic burst from a sustained increase. Cloudflare billing documentation
