When an upload competes with calls, games, browsing, or other devices sending data, those activities may feel delayed—especially if the connection has limited upload capacity or packets build up in a queue. That does not mean every slowdown during a backup is bufferbloat: Wi-Fi, router, modem, or ISP problems can cause similar symptoms.
Why an upload can affect the rest of the household
A backup sends data from your home to a cloud service, so it uses the connection’s upload capacity. Upload and download are separate directions: downloading receives data, while uploading sends it. Some home connections offer much less upload capacity than download capacity, so an outbound backup can become the constraint even when ordinary downloads are usually fast. Google explains that cloud uploads share internet bandwidth with other household activities such as calls and email in its bandwidth guidance for Nest cameras and doorbells.

Other outgoing traffic still has to pass through the same bottleneck. If data arrives at a network link faster than that link can transmit it, packets wait in a queue. A long queue can add delay to interactive traffic, making a call, game, or web page feel sluggish even if the connection has not dropped.
Bandwidth competition and bufferbloat are related, but not identical
Bandwidth competition means the backup is using some of the available upload capacity. Bufferbloat refers to excessive delay caused by packets waiting in a persistently full queue. The two can happen together, but seeing a slowdown during a backup does not by itself establish bufferbloat. ISP or router congestion, Wi-Fi interference, a weak wireless signal, or a device or app problem may also be responsible.

How to find out whether the backup is responsible
1. Compare performance with the backup paused
Note which devices are affected and when the slowdown starts. Pause the backup briefly, check whether responsiveness changes, then resume it. If the problem reliably improves while the transfer is paused and returns when it resumes, the backup is a useful lead—but it does not rule out another issue that happens at the same time.
2. Measure upload as well as download
Run a speed test and record both results. Download speed alone cannot show how much capacity is available for a cloud upload. TP-Link’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking actual upload and download rates.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
3. Compare wired and Wi-Fi devices
Check whether a wired device also slows down. If wired devices remain responsive while Wi-Fi devices struggle, investigate wireless signal strength, router placement, interference, and channel conditions. If both wired and wireless devices are affected, look more closely at upload utilization, the router, modem, and ISP connection.

Where your setup and ISP instructions permit, compare a speed test through the router with one connected directly to the modem. TP-Link describes this as a way to help determine whether the router or the modem/ISP connection may be involved. Follow your ISP’s instructions before changing cabling or network settings.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Ways to reduce the slowdown without replacing equipment
Limit or schedule the backup
If the backup app offers an upload-speed limit, lower it and check whether calls and other interactive tasks improve. Not every app provides this control. Otherwise, schedule large transfers for a quieter time. Microsoft’s OneDrive guidance suggests trying uploads at night, when household use and demand on the ISP’s network may be lower.
Use router queue management when the evidence points there
Some routers offer Smart Queue Management (SQM), Smart Queues, or traffic shaping. These features manage traffic at a bottleneck to reduce the effect of queues on latency. Bufferbloat.net’s SQM setup guidance recommends starting with shaping rates below the measured connection rate and then tuning them. Settings and feature names vary by router; an overly aggressive limit can reduce peak throughput.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Generic “QoS” labeling alone does not establish that a router has effective SQM. Check the documentation for your exact model and confirm that its settings can manage your measured upload and download rates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen new networking equipment may help
Consider a router or gateway with documented queue management only if testing points to latency under load and the current equipment lacks an effective way to manage it. Ubiquiti describes Smart Queues as useful for preventing clients from using all available bandwidth on lower-bandwidth connections, and says the feature limits client speeds to configured rates. Its under-300-Mbps use case is vendor guidance, not a universal threshold for every household.

Before buying, verify support for the exact model, compatibility with your modem and ISP setup, ability to configure rates for your connection, and whether the resulting speed limits suit your household. Replacing a router is not the first step when app settings, Wi-Fi conditions, or an ISP-side bottleneck may explain the problem.
