Classic RPGs can feel difficult because several pressures stack together: a party may need more levels to reach the next dungeon, magic may be limited, enemies may punish predictable actions, and defeat may erase a long stretch of progress. Those pressures are not one universal “old RPG” formula. Developer accounts show different games used different combinations—and later editions sometimes let players reduce specific kinds of friction.
Why do old RPGs feel so hard?
In many classic RPGs, winning a battle is only part of the challenge. The player must also judge whether the party is strong enough to proceed, whether to spend scarce abilities now or save them, what an enemy might do in response, and how much progress is at risk if the party loses. Each decision affects the next one: using magic to survive an ordinary encounter may leave less for a boss, while a distant save point can make a risky experiment costly.

These mechanics should be treated separately, rather than as a single difficulty setting. A level gate asks the player to build capability; resource management asks how to spend what the party already has; an enemy counter asks the player to understand a rule; and a harsh save or death system raises the cost of failure.

Why do classic RPGs make you grind?
Grinding is repeated combat undertaken to gain levels, money, or other progression. It becomes a practical gate when the next area’s enemies outmatch the party and the game offers few alternate routes. Repeating easier encounters can then be the most reliable way to improve the odds of getting through the dungeon.

FINAL FANTASY IV director Takashi Tokita recalled that the game used tiered dungeon balancing that expected players to level up: “We also balanced the game in this tiered way so you can’t get through dungeons without leveling up, and that might have felt a little challenging.” This is an example from one game, not proof that every classic RPG required grinding or that extra levels always solve a tactical problem. A historical overview of the original Dragon Quest also describes fights as depending heavily on character level, offering an earlier example of level-based progression (The Guardian’s Dragon Quest history and review).
Grinding can feel especially dull when the repeated fights offer little new information or decision-making. The player may be repeating low-risk actions to reach the next meaningful story or tactical choice. Tokita later contrasted that approach with a design emphasis on a smoother difficulty slope and reducing repetition: “Things are different now, what’s valued is finding a smooth difficulty slope that keeps players from having to do things over and over again as much as possible.” That is his retrospective perspective, not a description of every developer’s goals across an era (Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY IV anniversary interview).

How resource management adds a different kind of difficulty
Leveling makes a party stronger; resource management is about deciding how to use limited capabilities. If healing or magic is scarce, an ordinary encounter matters because spending a spell to win it safely may leave the party less prepared for what comes later.

Why can familiar attacks trigger enemy counters?
Some classic RPGs expect players to learn enemy behavior rather than rely on a simple rule such as “use the matching element.” Tokita described FINAL FANTASY IV enemies that react to certain player actions; an attack that seems intuitive could provoke a counter. Because the game’s Active Time Battle system let enemies act between ordinary player attacks, a counter could arrive before the player had finished a turn.
Tokita also recalled that players were expected to experiment and share information in person at a time when internet access was not a routine source of answers. That is one developer’s account of the period, not a universal explanation for how every game taught its rules. In practical terms, when a seemingly effective action causes a sudden response, treat the result as information: vary one action at a time, watch for a repeatable reaction, and avoid risking a long run of progress while testing a suspected counter.

What makes old RPG save systems feel punishing?
Save access changes the cost of failure. If a save point is far away, defeat can mean replaying a long stretch; if character death is difficult to reverse, the loss may be more than time or progress. These are distinct kinds of stakes.

A different example comes from the official Wizardry Variants: Daphne interview, where the speaker is identified simply as Mamoru. He described character death as consequential: “Unlike modern games, permadeath of a character was detrimental, with absolute no forgiveness.” The interview also describes players using resets and save-scumming to protect their characters. This illustrates a system where the potential loss of a character is central, rather than just the time needed to return to a boss (Wizardry Variants: Daphne interview).

When a game feels unfair, identify which pressure is actually blocking progress. The answer affects what to try next: more levels can help with a progression gate, but they do not reveal an enemy’s counter rule or make a scarce resource renewable.
- Progression dependence: Are enemies consistently stronger than the party, and are there few alternate routes? That points toward a level or equipment gate.
- Resource pressure: Does the party reach later fights short on healing or magic? Track what is being spent in ordinary encounters before assuming the party simply needs more levels.
- Enemy behavior: Does a particular action trigger an immediate response? Change one tactic at a time and observe whether the reaction repeats.
- Failure cost: How much time, progress, money, or character investment is lost after defeat? A long gap between saves can make experimentation much riskier.
- Encounter pressure: Are fights frequent, and can they be avoided? Encounter frequency changes how often the player must spend resources and how much repeated combat is required.
Can newer editions make classic RPGs less punishing?
Some later editions give players direct control over particular sources of friction. Square Enix’s 2023 announcement for the console versions of FINAL FANTASY Pixel Remaster says they include options to switch off random encounters and adjust experience multipliers from zero to four (Square Enix’s Pixel Remaster console announcement).
Those controls apply to the console editions described in that announcement; they do not establish that every platform version or the original releases have the same options. Turning off random encounters addresses encounter frequency, while changing experience gain affects leveling pace. Neither necessarily changes an enemy’s behavior, a save point’s location, or every consequence of defeat.
What to compare when choosing a version or game
“Difficulty” can mean several different things. If you are deciding whether a version will suit you, compare the mechanics that determine the kind of friction you want to avoid or keep.
Quick Recap
| Factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Recovery | How much health, magic, or other capability returns between encounters? | Limited recovery makes routine fights affect readiness for later ones. |
| Save access | How far apart are saves, and can you save before major risks? | A longer interval raises the time cost of a mistake. |
| Failure cost | Does defeat cost time, money, progress, or a character? | Different penalties call for different levels of caution. |
| Encounter pressure | How frequent are encounters, and can they be avoided? | More fights mean more opportunities to spend resources or repeat combat. |
| Progression dependence | Can tactics or route choices carry the party forward, or is leveling a practical requirement? | This distinguishes a problem solved through play decisions from one that may require building capability. |
| Player controls | Does this specific edition offer encounter or experience settings? | Later releases may let players alter some friction without changing every underlying rule. |
