Why Chrome Uses High CPU—and How to Find the Cause

Chrome’s CPU use often comes from a demanding page, extension, or graphics task. Use Chrome Task Manager to locate the workload before changing settings.

Chrome can use a lot of CPU when a web page, web app, extension, or graphics-related task is doing demanding work. The quickest way to find out what is happening is to identify the busy task or process before changing settings: a CPU spike does not, by itself, mean Chrome is defective.

What is using the CPU in Chrome?

Chrome runs separate tasks for browser work, page rendering, extensions, and graphics. The process or task showing high activity can help narrow down the cause, but it does not always identify a single guilty tab: a renderer may serve one or more tabs or extensions.

A tab or web app

A page with intensive scripts or other demanding work can keep its renderer busy. Google notes that a poorly programmed web app can raise renderer CPU use. If the spike regularly appears with one site, test that page separately from other tabs before concluding that Chrome itself is at fault. See Google’s managed Chrome performance troubleshooting guide.

An extension

An extension can also contribute to browser workload. If you suspect one, disable extensions and check whether CPU use changes; re-enable them selectively to isolate the cause. Remove extensions you do not need.

Graphics work or the GPU process

Graphics-intensive pages, including pages with 3D images or YouTube videos, can affect the GPU process. Google also identifies graphics-driver issues as a possible cause of GPU-process problems. This is a different clue from a busy renderer, and it does not establish that every high-CPU spike is a graphics issue.

The main browser process

If another Chrome process is busy, use the process name and the timing of the spike as clues rather than treating the process label as a complete diagnosis. Google’s detailed process guidance is specifically for managed Chrome on Windows; other platforms may offer different process tools and menus.

  • Dual USB Hub: With a built-in dual USB hub, the laptop fan enables you to connect additional USB devices to your laptop, providing extra connectivity options for your peripherals. Warm tips: The packaged cable is a USB-to-USB connection. Type C connection devices require a Type C to USB adapter. Please plug the cooling pad's USB cable into a 5V 1A adapter for best performance; otherwise, the fans may fail to spin or run at very low speed.

Simply press the switch to select 1 fan working, 4 fans working, or all 5 working together.
  • Ergonomic Design: The laptop cooling stand also serves as an ergonomic stand, offering 6 adjustable height settings that enable you to customize the angle for optimal comfort during gaming, movie watching, or working for extended periods. Ideal gift for both the back-to-school season and Father's Day.
  • Secure and Universal Compatibility: Designed with 2 stoppers on the front surface, this laptop cooler prevents laptops from slipping and keeps 12-17 inch laptops—including Apple Macbook Pro Air, HP, Alienware, Dell, ASUS, and more—cool and secure during use.

How to identify the busy Chrome task

  1. Open Chrome Task Manager. In Chrome, select More tools > Task Manager, then inspect which tasks are using resources. Google’s instructions for speeding up Chrome include this built-in tool.
  2. Connect the task to your activity. Note whether high use begins with a particular tab, web app, extension, or graphics-heavy page. Close or isolate that workload and see whether the pattern changes.
  3. Stop only work you can safely lose. You can end a task that is no longer needed, but doing so may discard unsaved work in that tab or app. Save anything important first.

For managed Chrome on Windows, Google recommends using Windows Task Manager or Process Explorer to distinguish the main, renderer, and GPU processes. These instructions are scoped to managed Windows devices, so do not assume the same tools or labels apply on every computer.

What to try when Chrome is using too much CPU

Close tabs you are not using

Close unused tabs, then check whether CPU use falls. Fewer open tabs can mean less work for Chrome, though a single demanding page may still be responsible for a spike.

Test extensions

Turn off extensions you do not need and observe CPU use. If the problem improves, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify which one correlates with the change. Remove unwanted extensions rather than leaving them active.

Try hardware acceleration as a diagnostic

If the symptoms suggest an issue involving the computer’s hardware or graphics, you can test Chrome with hardware acceleration off. Open Chrome settings and turn off Use hardware acceleration when available, then restart Chrome and compare behavior. Google recommends this setting change in its crash and startup troubleshooting guidance when hardware interaction may be involved. Treat the result as a clue, not a guaranteed fix or a universal performance improvement.

When administrators need to investigate further

On managed Windows devices, Google advises administrators to identify the relevant process first. If process managers do not reveal the cause, its performance guide describes collecting event traces for investigation. Review what a trace captures before sharing it: traces may include sensitive information about processes, files, or input-related activity.
