On an Android phone, look in Chrome’s tab switcher, then check Recent tabs and Inactive tabs. On an Android tablet, a missing window may be under More > Manage windows > Inactive; select it and tap Restore. The steps differ because Chrome’s tablet window controls are not the same as the phone’s tab controls.
First, tell whether a tab or a tablet window disappeared
Chrome’s Android help covers tabs on phones and tablets, but the Manage windows workflow is specifically for tablets. If you use a phone, follow the tab steps below; do not look for the tablet’s window-management menu.

Also distinguish something that is still open but hard to find, something Chrome has moved to an inactive list, and something you explicitly closed. Each has a different recovery route.

- Open the tab switcher: In Chrome, tap the tab switcher beside the address bar. Swipe through the open tabs and tap the one you want. Google’s instructions describe open tabs in this view.
- Check Recent tabs: Tap More > Recent tabs to look for recently closed tabs or tabs available from other devices. Depending on the Chrome interface, tab search may also help locate an open tab. Search results can include suggestions as well as recently closed and other-device tabs.
- Check Inactive tabs: In the tab switcher, open Inactive tabs. Google says tabs and tab groups unused for 14 days or more move there. Tap the tab or group to open it. This is a move to another section, not a statement that Chrome automatically deletes the tab at the 14-day mark.
- Look in History if it is still missing: Open Chrome’s menu and choose History to look for the page you visited. A history entry may help you reopen a site, but it is not the same as restoring the original tab and its state.

Restore a missing window on an Android tablet
- Open Chrome and tap More.
- Tap Manage windows. The Active section lists recently opened windows; Inactive contains inactive windows.
- Open Inactive, select the tab or window you need, then tap Restore.
If Chrome cannot restore the window because the window limit has been reached, close an active window to make room, then try again. Google also documents More > Recent tabs as another way to reopen a tab or window. On a keyboard-equipped tablet, Ctrl + Shift + T can restore a closed window or tab.
Inactive is not the same as closed
Google says a window closed through Manage windows does not move to Inactive and cannot be restored from that list. Use Recent tabs for a closed item instead. For touch users, that menu remains available without a keyboard shortcut.

What if the tab was on another device—or sync did not bring it back?
Recent tabs and tab search can show tabs from other devices, but availability depends on the account and sync state. Sign-in or sync does not guarantee that every missing tab will reappear. A Chrome Community user reported on May 31, 2024 that Sync brought back only 40 of more than 100 previously open tabs; that is one person’s experience, not a general recovery limit or a measure of how Sync normally behaves. Check Recent tabs, History, and other-device tabs, but treat them as places to look rather than guaranteed backups. The report is at How do I recover missing tabs on Android?.

If Chrome itself crashes or will not open
Missing tabs alone do not establish that Chrome is broken. If the app is crashing or will not open, use Google’s Android-specific troubleshooting and begin with its software checks, including restarting the device: Fix Chrome if it crashes or won’t open – Android.
