Why Chrome May Ask for Biometric Authentication Before Filling a Password

Chrome can request a fingerprint, face, or device passcode before autofilling saved passwords. Its password-specific setting is separate from verification for other sensitive autofill.

Chrome may ask for your fingerprint, face, or device passcode before filling a saved password because Google Password Manager can require an identity check. On a PC, the password-specific setting is called “Use Windows Hello when filling passwords”; on a Mac, it is “Use your screen lock when filling passwords.” Google says biometric authentication for this password-specific feature is off by default. A separate control for sensitive autofill information is on by default unless you turn it off.

Why Chrome asks you to verify before autofilling a password

The prompt is an identity check associated with Chrome and Google Password Manager’s password-protection and autofill features. Google says confirmation can help protect saved passwords from unauthorized access. It does not, on the cited documentation, indicate that the website itself asked Chrome to scan your fingerprint or face.

Chrome may use on-device encryption for autofill and password data; Google says the details depend on the operating system. You can read its explanation in How Chrome protects your autofill and password data.

Two Chrome settings can trigger verification

Chrome has a password-specific biometric option and a broader re-authentication control for sensitive saved information. They have different scopes and defaults.

Setting What it covers Default noted by Google Platform or fallback
“Use Windows Hello when filling passwords” or “Use your screen lock when filling passwords” Filling saved passwords Biometric authentication is off by default for this feature Windows PC: Windows Hello. Mac: screen lock.
“Verify it’s you when filling sensitive info” Sensitive saved information more broadly Additional re-authentication is on by default unless turned off If biometrics are unavailable, Chrome can use the device’s default screen lock, such as a password or passcode.

Google documents the password controls in Manage passwords in Chrome – Computer and the broader autofill control in Fill out forms automatically in Chrome – Computer.

How to check or change the password prompt

  1. In Chrome, open Passwords and autofill.
  2. Select Google Password Manager, then open Settings.
  3. On a Windows PC, inspect Use Windows Hello when filling passwords. On a Mac, inspect Use your screen lock when filling passwords; change the relevant option if you do not want that password-specific confirmation.

How to check verification for other sensitive autofill

  1. Open Chrome Settings.
  2. Go to Autofill and passwords, then Autofill settings.
  3. Inspect Verify it’s you when filling sensitive info. Google says turning this off prevents screen-lock or biometric verification prompts when attempting to autofill sensitive information.
