Why Chrome DevTools Full-Page Screenshots Miss Lazy-Loaded Images

A full-page screenshot captures off-screen space, not necessarily off-screen images. Here’s how to trigger lazy loading, check image requests and capture again.

Chrome DevTools can capture a page beyond the visible viewport, but that does not mean it has caused every off-screen image to load. Full-page capture records the page’s rendered state; lazy loading delays some image requests until the browser judges them close enough to the viewport. Scroll the page, wait for image requests and rendering to finish, then capture again.

Why images can be missing from a full-page capture

Capturing the whole document and loading all of its content are separate things. In Device Mode, Chrome’s More options > Capture a full size screenshot command captures content outside the visible viewport. It does not, by itself, guarantee that every deferred image has been fetched and rendered. Chrome’s Device Mode documentation describes the capture command, while MDN’s image reference explains how native lazy loading defers image fetching until the browser-calculated distance from the viewport.

When an image is marked loading="lazy", it may remain unloaded while it is far from the viewport. A full-height screenshot can therefore contain blank space or a placeholder where the image would appear after it loads. The screenshot’s dimensions are not evidence that every image request has happened.

The page load event is not an all-images-ready signal

The page’s load event can fire while lazy-loaded images are still pending. MDN notes that lazy images are not part of the eager-image basis for that event. Inspect the specific image instead of assuming the page is ready because load fired. MDN’s lazy-loading guide describes this distinction and ways to work with viewport-triggered loading.

Some sites need an interaction before loading images

Native lazy loading is not the only possibility. Site code may wait for scrolling, an intersection event, or another interaction before assigning an image’s real source or requesting it. If that trigger has not occurred, taking a static screenshot cannot substitute for it. Exact behavior depends on the page’s markup, scripts, styling, network state, viewport, and Chrome version.

How to make Chrome load images before capturing

  1. Open the page in Chrome DevTools Device Mode. Choose More options > Capture a full size screenshot for the initial capture. This captures beyond the viewport, but is not a command to force every lazy image to load.
  2. Return to the page and scroll through it in sections. Bring the areas containing missing images near the viewport, then pause so requests and rendering can complete. Scrolling can trigger native lazy loading and site-specific scroll or intersection handlers.
  3. Inspect a missing image in the Console. Select the relevant <img> element and check its loading, src, currentSrc, and complete properties. For example, with an image selected as $0, run:
({ loading: $0.loading, src: $0.src, currentSrc: $0.currentSrc, complete: $0.complete })

A complete value of false means the image has not finished loading; on its own, it does not tell you why. Compare src and currentSrc with what you expect. A missing or unexpected source may point to page logic that has not assigned the image URL yet.

  1. Check the request in the Network panel. Find the corresponding image request and determine whether it was made and whether it completed or failed. To relate page appearance to loading activity, enable Capture screenshots in the Network panel and reload. Chrome documents this feature as a way to correlate screenshots during loading with requests at that point in time: Network features reference.
  2. For custom loading, verify the trigger. If the page uses JavaScript to load images after scrolling or an intersection event, make sure that interaction occurred. Check the Network panel for the resulting request rather than treating scrolling alone as proof that the image is ready.
  3. Take the full-size screenshot again. Capture after the required image requests have completed and the images have appeared on the page.

Which DevTools action solves which part?

Method What it helps with What it does not guarantee
Device Mode full-size screenshot Captures page content outside the visible viewport. That every deferred image has been requested or rendered.
Scroll through the page and wait Brings viewport-triggered content near the viewport and gives it time to load. That every request succeeds, or that site-specific triggers have all run.
Network-panel screenshots and requests Helps correlate visible page state with loading activity and identify whether image requests occurred or failed. Forcing a missing request to happen or replacing a required page interaction.

These are complementary steps: full-size capture addresses page extent, scrolling and waiting address viewport-triggered loading, and Network-panel screenshots help diagnose timing. Chrome’s older Chrome 89 release notes describe the historical evolution of full-node capture; they should not be read as a guarantee about every current page or Chrome version. Troubleshooting missing images

  • The image is blank and complete is false: it has not finished loading. Check whether a request appears in Network; if not, scroll it near the viewport and inspect whether the page assigns a source only after interaction.
  • A request appears but fails: the screenshot reflects an image that did not load successfully. Use the Network panel to inspect that request’s outcome; repeating the capture without resolving the load failure will not supply the image.
  • The request completes but the screenshot still looks blank: check the rendered page again before recapturing. The request may have completed before the image was visibly rendered, or the page may be displaying a placeholder or applying its own presentation logic.
  • Scrolling does not trigger the image: confirm that the page’s expected scroll or intersection behavior occurred. Custom JavaScript may require a particular region or interaction, so there is no universal scroll distance that guarantees loading.
  • The page looks ready after load, but images are absent: inspect each relevant image and its request; the event does not prove that lazy resources have loaded.

Chrome’s Performance tools can help investigate runtime activity when content appears only after interaction; see the Performance features reference and Chrome’s image component guidance. Results vary by site, and no single capture sequence can be assumed to trigger every site’s custom loading code.

ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. Its full-page capture can load lazy images; cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot, with each step configurable. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server gives AI agents screenshot tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.

For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of Stripe as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options and setup.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
