Chinese web fonts are often large because supporting Chinese—and, more broadly, Chinese, Japanese and Korean (CJK)—can require far more glyphs than a Latin-only font. File size also depends on whether the package includes multiple regional forms and weights, and on how a site divides and requests its font files. The practical goal is not simply to use the smallest file: it is to deliver the glyphs and regional forms a page actually needs without downloading unnecessary resources.
Why does CJK coverage increase font size?
A font file needs data for the glyphs it supports. A broad CJK font therefore carries a much larger repertoire than a font designed only for Latin text. “CJK” is a useful umbrella term, but the scripts are not interchangeable: shared Han characters can have different preferred forms in Chinese, Japanese and Korean contexts.

That distinction affects packaging. Source Han Sans documents five language deployments: Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese for Taiwan, Traditional Chinese for Hong Kong, Japanese and Korean. It also describes localized forms that depend on language-tagged text and OpenType locl support. A package intended for several audiences can carry more than one regional variant; a deployment aimed at one locale can avoid some of that extra coverage. Source Han Sans documentation
Coverage, regional forms and weights all count
These are separate choices: which characters the font contains, which regional glyph forms it can render, and how many weights or styles are packaged. Noto CJK documents language- and region-specific packaging options. Its documentation cautions that a regional variable-font package carrying resources for all five language variants across all seven weights would be larger than the language-specific variable package. A variable font may help avoid duplicating weight data in some packaging arrangements, but bundling every locale can outweigh that benefit. Noto CJK packaging documentation
What determines how much a visitor downloads?
The font family’s full package size is not necessarily the amount a particular page transfers. Actual delivery depends on which resources the site references, how the files are subset, and which characters appear in the rendered text. A site may divide a large font into files covering different ranges, so a browser can request resources relevant to the page rather than one monolithic file.
CSS unicode-range helps associate a font face with a range of Unicode codepoints. It does not add missing glyphs. The W3C specification defines the effective character map for a used font as the intersection of the declared range and the codepoints in the font’s own character map. In other words, the CSS range must match what the file really contains; a range declaration cannot repair an incomplete subset. W3C CSS Fonts specification

How can you reduce font bytes without losing needed characters?
Choose coverage for the site’s audience
If a site serves only Simplified Chinese, assess a Simplified Chinese deployment rather than automatically shipping resources for Japanese, Korean and multiple Traditional Chinese variants. If one resource must serve several CJK locales, compare broad coverage with language-aware localized forms and verify the results with representative text. For fixed text such as a logo or heading, Google Fonts documents the API’s text= parameter, which requests the characters needed for that text. Its guide says, “In some cases, this can reduce the size of the font file by up to 90%.” That is conditional vendor guidance, not a guaranteed saving for a full Chinese page: the result depends on the font and the requested text. Split files with ranges that reflect their contents
Multiple @font-face declarations can pair subsets with corresponding unicode-range values. This lets the browser match text to the relevant font face, provided the file’s character map actually includes those characters. Keep ranges and subsets aligned, and check that fallback behavior is acceptable for any uncovered text. W3C CSS Fonts specification
Check format and weight packaging
Google Fonts documents WOFF2 retrieval and variable-font API responses with axis-range metadata. Compare the actual files served in the format and weight configuration your site uses; do not assume a variable font or a particular family package will be smaller in every case. Also count the font requests made by representative pages, since fewer bytes and fewer requests are related but distinct performance considerations. Google Fonts Developer API documentation

How should you compare font-delivery options?
Nominal package sizes are meaningful only when the comparisons hold constant the font version, file format, weight configuration and character coverage. For a useful comparison, measure the assets and requests for representative pages, then review the trade-offs:

There is no single byte figure that describes “a Chinese web font”: coverage, version, format, weights and packaging all change the result. Without a like-for-like measurement of those specific assets, a precise size comparison would be misleading.
