Why ChatGPT Started Citing My Site: What Changed—and What I Can’t Prove

A citation appearing after website changes is worth tracking, but timing does not identify the cause. Separate citation records, crawler access, and ChatGPT referral visits.

Why did ChatGPT start citing my site? The honest answer is that a citation appeared after changes were made, but timing alone cannot show which change caused it. Without the site’s dated change log, citation records, and analytics, the specific cause remains unproven.

The useful question is narrower: what changed, when was a citation observed, and what evidence connects the two? OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT Search, but search placement is not guaranteed. A citation is an observation to document—not proof of a reliable optimization recipe.

What changed, and when?

Start with a dated chronology rather than a causal conclusion. Separate changes to page content from technical changes that could affect whether a crawler can access the site. The records needed to establish this chronology were not provided, so no specific edits or dates can be attributed here.

  • Content changes: record each affected URL, what changed, and the date it was published.
  • Technical changes: record changes to robots.txt, hosting or CDN rules, indexing directives, and other access settings, with dates.
  • Other site changes: note redesigns, migrations, or indexing changes that occurred in the same period.

This establishes what preceded the observation. It does not, on its own, establish what caused it.

What citation evidence should I record?

For every observed citation, keep the exact query, date, ChatGPT experience or mode if known, answer snapshot, and cited URL. Record whether the answer appears to use information from that page. A citation seen once shows that it appeared for that query under those conditions; it does not establish a stable pattern.

To assess repeatability, use a fixed set of queries and check them on multiple dates. Compare citation presence and destination URLs, not just whether the site appeared somewhere in an answer. Keep the answer context: different wording or circumstances can produce different search results.

What OpenAI’s crawler guidance does—and does not—establish

OpenAI says that “Any public website can appear in ChatGPT search.” It recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot if a publisher wants content to be included in ChatGPT Search summaries and snippets. That makes crawler access relevant to eligibility, not a guarantee that a page will be selected or cited. OpenAI says search placement depends on multiple factors and is not guaranteed. OpenAI’s publisher FAQ and ChatGPT Search guidance describe these limits.

OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot are separate controls with different documented purposes. OAI-SearchBot serves ChatGPT Search; GPTBot relates to potential training use. A publisher can allow search crawling while disallowing GPTBot. Changing one setting should not be described as changing the other. OpenAI documents the distinction in its crawler guidance.

Check the relevant robots.txt rules and, where available, server or CDN logs for evidence of access. A permissive robots.txt rule shows that the rule did not disallow the crawler; it does not prove a particular page was fetched, indexed, or cited. OpenAI also notes that a blocked page’s URL may sometimes be discovered elsewhere; ChatGPT Atlas may then show only a title and link. It recommends a readable noindex directive for publishers who do not want that title-and-link behavior.

What referral analytics can prove

OpenAI says publishers can track visits arriving through ChatGPT referral links in their analytics platform. Those referral URLs automatically include utm_source=chatgpt.com. A matching session supports the claim that a visit was attributed through such a link; it is not a count of every time the site was cited, and it does not show that a particular page edit caused the citation. OpenAI’s publisher FAQ describes this referral attribution.

Keep citation observations and referral sessions as separate measures. A citation may be observed without a visit, and referral traffic measures visits rather than all citation appearances. Compare analytics over defined periods and preserve the relevant page and campaign details, but do not treat traffic alone as evidence of why a citation appeared.

How to test whether the changes are associated with citations

A stronger assessment compares citation observations across a consistent query set and period, while also looking at similar pages that did not change. It remains observational, but it can show whether the timing and pattern fit the proposed explanation better than a single before-and-after sighting.

Evidence to compare What it can show What it cannot show by itself
Dated page and technical changes Which interventions preceded the observations That an intervention caused a citation
Repeated checks using fixed queries Whether citations recur under recorded conditions, and which URL is cited That the pattern will persist for other queries or future answers
Robots.txt and available server or CDN logs Whether documented crawler access may have been blocked, and whether access is recorded That access led to selection or citation
Analytics sessions with utm_source=chatgpt.com Visits attributed through ChatGPT referral URLs All citation appearances or the cause of a citation
Similar unchanged pages and a matching period A comparison against some background changes A definitive causal result; other differences may remain
Concurrent changes and outside events Potential alternative explanations, such as a redesign, indexing changes, external mentions, platform updates, or changed queries Which explanation was decisive without further evidence

There is another distinction worth preserving: a page can be cited without its information necessarily shaping the answer. A 2026 preprint describes citation selection and citation absorption as separate stages. Its reported dataset covers 602 controlled prompts and related citation and page records; those study counts do not establish that any specific edit causes a particular site to be cited. The preprint is exploratory, not proof of an effect for this site.

What can I conclude?

If a citation appeared after site changes, the records can establish the chronology and whether the observation recurred. Crawl rules and logs can clarify access; referral analytics can show attributed visits. Without a suitable comparison and control for other changes, those facts cannot prove which edit produced the citation. In this case, no site-specific records were provided, so the cause cannot be established.
