Without an authorized session for the target site, the renderer may capture a login or error page instead of the article. First check what the browser actually rendered, then confirm that the exact endpoint supports an approved authenticated workflow—and that you are permitted to capture that page.
Why the API can return a screenshot without showing the article
There are two separate authentication boundaries:
- Screenshot API authentication: your API key lets you use the rendering service.
- Target-site authentication: the subscription website separately requires a valid account session, such as its own cookies or another supported sign-in method.
Providing the screenshot service’s API key does not provide a subscriber session. ScreenshotEngine states this explicitly in its API keys and authentication documentation: “Your ScreenshotEngine API key authenticates the API call; it does not sign in to the website being captured.” Its reviewed endpoint does not document custom cookies, target-site Authorization headers, or login scripts. That describes this endpoint, not every screenshot provider.
A render can therefore work correctly while the requested content remains inaccessible: the image may faithfully show the website’s sign-in screen, access-denied page, or another error. The screenshot-api.net documentation says its service may return a login or error image for a 401 or 403 response; that behavior is specific to its documented service, not a universal rule. Source.
Diagnose the result before changing your request
- Confirm the URL and API request. Check that the request reaches the intended page and authenticates to the screenshot service as that provider documents. Keep the service API key distinct from any target-site credentials.
- Inspect the image and response details. Look for a login page, access-denied notice, final URL, status, or response metadata. A valid screenshot of a login page is not necessarily a rendering failure.
- Check the exact endpoint’s supported authentication. Find out whether it documents cookies, target-site authorization headers, or an approved interaction workflow. Do not assume a feature exists because another endpoint or provider offers it.
- Verify permission and terms. Confirm that both the screenshot provider and the site permit the intended capture. If you cannot establish an approved route, ask the provider or site owner, use a source/API intended for subscriber access, or capture content you own or are authorized to capture.
What to check when choosing an authorized renderer
If you are entitled to capture a page, compare providers on practical capabilities and safeguards—not on whether they promise to get around a paywall.

| Check | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Authentication support | Does the exact endpoint document cookies, authorization headers, or an approved sign-in interaction? |
| Error visibility | Can you distinguish a rendered login/error page from a successful capture using status, final URL, or response metadata? |
| Terms of use | Do the provider’s terms and the target site’s terms allow this page and intended use? |
| Credential handling | Where are session tokens or credentials sent and stored? Keep both API keys and target credentials out of public client code and logs. |
ScreenshotEngine’s endpoint does not document custom cookies, target-site Authorization headers, or login scripts, so it should not be treated as supporting those mechanisms. Its documentation also advises keeping its API key server-side. Confirm current documentation and terms for the exact service you use.
Do not bypass the subscription or site controls
A screenshot renderer does not grant permission to view subscriber-only material. The screenshot-api.net Acceptable Use Policy says to point the renderer only at pages you are entitled to capture. It permits captures such as pages you own or operate, pages captured for a customer who requested them, and lawful public pages consistent with site terms. It bars defeating logins, session checks, tokens, paywalls, metered walls, subscriptions you have not paid for, CAPTCHA, bot detection, IP bans, and rate limits. The policy is provider-specific; check the applicable provider and site rules for your case. Read the policy.
