If your iPhone can’t make or receive calls, first identify which symptom you have: outgoing calls fail, incoming calls don’t ring, or the status bar says SOS, No Service, or Searching. The cause may be a setting or software issue, weak coverage, a SIM/eSIM or line problem, or a carrier account or network fault. Start with the quick checks below and test calling after each change.
Start with the symptom
Whether the problem affects outgoing calls, incoming calls, or both helps narrow down what to check. If only particular people can’t reach you, focus first on blocked contacts and call-filtering settings. If the phone shows SOS, No Service, or Searching, check cellular connection and your line. - Outgoing calls fail: Try the quick connection checks, then check your line, software, and carrier service.
- Incoming calls don’t ring or go to voicemail: Check Focus, blocked contacts, Call Forwarding, call filtering, and Silent mode.
- SOS, No Service, or Searching: The iPhone is not connected to its cellular network; check signal, line status, and carrier service.
Try quick, reversible checks first
- Refresh the connection. Open Control Center, turn Airplane Mode on, wait five seconds, then turn it off. Try a call again.
- Check Focus. Open Settings > Focus and see whether a Focus mode, including Do Not Disturb, is silencing calls. Labels may vary by iOS version; use Settings search if needed.
- Restart the iPhone. This is an Apple-listed step for SOS, No Service, or Searching. After it restarts, check the status bar and try calling.
If you can’t make outgoing calls
Check the line and cellular connection
If you use Dual SIM, open Settings > Cellular and confirm that the line you intend to call from is enabled. Menu labels can vary by iOS version. If the phone shows No Service or Searching, try again in a different location where cellular coverage may be available.

Check for carrier settings and iOS updates
Connect to Wi-Fi, then open Settings > General > About and wait to see whether a carrier settings update is offered. Install an available iOS update as well; some updates require Wi-Fi. The exact prompts and menu labels can vary by system version. Test a call after each update.
Inspect a physical SIM only if your iPhone has one
If the iPhone uses a physical SIM, reseating it may help with a line or connection problem. Don’t force a SIM that does not fit; contact your carrier if it is damaged or ill-fitting. eSIM-only iPhone models have no physical SIM tray.

If incoming calls don’t ring or go to voicemail
If the issue is limited to incoming calls, check settings that can silence, redirect, or screen them. On current iOS versions, look in Settings for these controls; use Settings search if a label or menu location differs.
- Silent mode: Check that the iPhone isn’t set to silence calls.
- Focus or Do Not Disturb: Review Settings > Focus and the active Focus mode’s allowed people and apps.
- Blocked Contacts: Review Settings > Apps > Phone > Blocked Contacts, or search Settings for “Blocked Contacts.” Remove a number if it was blocked unintentionally.
- Call Forwarding: Search Settings for “Call Forwarding” and check whether calls are being sent elsewhere.
- Silence Unknown Callers or call filtering: Check Phone settings for options that silence or screen calls from unknown numbers. These can explain why some callers don’t ring through.

Can you call over Wi-Fi when cellular signal is weak?
Wi-Fi Calling can let you make and receive calls through Wi-Fi when cellular signal is low, but support depends on your carrier and country or region. To see whether it is available, open Settings and search for “Wi-Fi Calling”; follow the carrier’s setup prompts if the option appears. Apple’s instructions are at Make calls using Wi-Fi on iPhone.
Emergency calls have special routing and location handling. Follow any address or setup prompts from your carrier, and follow local emergency guidance rather than treating Wi-Fi Calling as a universal substitute for cellular emergency service.

When to contact your carrier
Contact your carrier when the problem may involve the line, account, coverage, or carrier network—especially if the iPhone continues to show SOS, No Service, or Searching after the checks above. Ask the carrier to confirm:

- there is no billing-related block or local outage;
- the line or device is not barred or restricted; and
- calls are not failing because of a carrier-side network or call error.
Account status, outages, and service availability are time-sensitive, and Apple cannot see your carrier account details. The carrier is the right place to verify them.

Use Network Settings reset only after easier checks
If the problem persists, Apple lists resetting network settings as a later troubleshooting step. Before doing it, note that it removes saved Wi-Fi passwords and preferred networks, as well as previously used VPN and APN settings. You may need to set those up again.
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset > Reset Network Settings.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi if needed, then test calling again.

When Apple service may be appropriate
If your carrier confirms that the account, line, and network are working but calling still fails, contact Apple for help assessing whether the iPhone needs service. A failed call alone does not establish that a particular hardware component is faulty.
