You usually can’t format an internal drive because it is currently in use, marked read-only, affected by file-system errors, or not being detected. The right fix depends on whether you use Windows or macOS, what error appears, and whether you need to keep the files. If the drive contains data you want, stop before trying to erase or repair it.
Before troubleshooting, protect any files you need
Formatting and repair attempts can damage or erase data. If you need files from the drive, do not format it, delete its partitions, or run commands intended to reset it. Prioritize preserving the data and consider qualified recovery help if the drive is failing or repeatedly disappearing.

Apple recommends making a current backup before repairing a Mac storage device, since files may be damaged or erased during the process. See Apple’s Disk Utility repair guidance. An external drive can be useful for a backup, but it will not fix a disk that cannot be formatted.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirst identify the operating system, disk, and error
Before changing anything, establish three facts:
- Are you using Windows or macOS, and which version?
- What is the exact error message or code?
- Does the intended disk appear in Windows Disk Management or macOS Disk Utility, and is it the disk or partition currently running the operating system?
These details distinguish an ordinary limitation—such as trying to format the active system partition—from a read-only setting, file-system damage, or a disk-detection problem. Do not assume formatting is a repair for physical drive failure.

- SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
- USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
- REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
- 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
- PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
Why Windows may refuse to format the drive
The partition is in use
Windows cannot format a disk or partition that is currently in use, including the partition containing Windows, through Disk Management. Microsoft states this limitation in its Disk Management guidance. If your goal is to reinstall Windows or erase its system drive, you need an appropriate boot or recovery process rather than formatting that partition while Windows is running. Select the target carefully: choosing another disk can erase the wrong data.
The disk is marked read-only
A read-only attribute can prevent changes, but it does not prove that the drive is healthy or that clearing the attribute will solve the problem. Microsoft’s DiskPart documentation describes how to inspect and clear the selected disk’s read-only attribute: attributes disk.

DiskPart commands apply to the object currently selected. Before using them, verify the disk’s number and identity; selecting the wrong disk can have serious consequences. Microsoft explains DiskPart’s selection model and disk commands in its DiskPart reference. Avoid destructive commands such as clean or formatting unless you intend to erase the relevant partition or volume information and have protected anything you need.

If Disk Management sees the disk but formatting fails with an error, the volume or disk structure may have a problem. Note the exact message and avoid repeatedly retrying an erase operation, particularly if the disk is also slow, disappearing, or contains important files. Those signs make data preservation and diagnosis more important than trying another format.

You are expecting a quick format to erase the data securely
A quick format creates a new file table; Microsoft says it does not fully overwrite or erase the volume. It is not a secure-erasure method. See Microsoft’s explanation of Disk Management and formatting.
Why macOS may refuse to format an internal drive
You are trying to work on the startup disk
macOS cannot treat its active startup disk like an ordinary idle volume. To repair a startup disk, Apple directs users to start from macOS Recovery and use Disk Utility there. Apple also advises using Recovery when checking a startup disk or volume. Follow Apple’s repair instructions and its Disk Utility First Aid guidance.

Disk Utility detects errors it cannot repair
Apple recommends running First Aid on each volume, then each container, and finally the physical storage device. Disk Utility can find and repair some problems involving formatting and directory structure, but it cannot fix every fault. Back up first: Apple warns that files may be damaged or erased during repair. If First Aid cannot repair the errors, Apple says erasing the disk may be necessary—but erasing destroys data, so do not proceed unless that is your intent and you have a safe copy of anything important.

Check whether the device is listed in Disk Utility, including the available device and volume views. If it remains absent, Apple says the Mac or storage device might need service. Its guidance is explicit: “If your storage device doesn’t appear in the sidebar of Disk Utility, your Mac or the storage device might need service.” See Apple Support.

Choose the next step based on what you see
| What you observe | Safer next step |
|---|---|
| The target is the active Windows or macOS system disk | Use the operating system’s appropriate boot or recovery environment; do not try to format the running system partition in place. |
| Windows reports read-only status, and the disk is visible | Confirm the disk’s identity and inspect its DiskPart attributes before considering whether to clear read-only. This does not establish that the drive is healthy. |
| The disk appears, but repair or format errors persist | Preserve needed data first. On a Mac, use First Aid in the recommended order; if errors remain, follow Apple’s guidance rather than repeating destructive attempts. |
| The disk is missing from Disk Management or Disk Utility, or repeatedly disappears | Stop repeated format attempts. The issue may require device or computer service, especially if the data matters. |
| You want to reuse the disk and do not need its contents | After confirming the correct target and backing up anything needed, use the operating system’s supported disk-management or recovery workflow. |
When formatting is the wrong next move
Formatting is an erase or setup operation, not a general-purpose cure for a failing drive. If the disk is absent from the operating system’s disk utility, repeatedly produces errors, or holds files you cannot replace, stop destructive troubleshooting and seek appropriate service or data-recovery advice. The exact cause cannot be determined from the question alone; the operating system, error text, disk visibility, and data-recovery needs all matter.
