“Why can’t I copy and paste in Microsoft Word?” usually boils down to a clipboard issue, a Word add-in or setting blocking paste, or a Windows/macOS protection feature getting in the way. The frustrating part is that the symptom looks the same whether it’s a local glitch or a policy restriction.
This guide walks through a practical, 2024-ready troubleshooting flow for Word on Windows and macOS. You’ll start with quick checks, then move into deeper fixes like safe mode, add-ins, clipboard history, Protected View, and Office repair.

When copy/paste fails in Word, it typically shows up in one of these ways: Ctrl+C doesn’t seem to copy, Ctrl+V pastes nothing, pasting inserts weird formatting, or paste buttons are disabled. Sometimes the paste target is the problem (the cursor is in the wrong place), and sometimes the clipboard is.

Quick checks (the fastest fixes before deep troubleshooting)
Start here—these resolve a surprising number of cases quickly.
- Try keyboard shortcuts and ribbon paste: Use Ctrl+C then Ctrl+V. Also try Home > Paste (the dropdown) and select Keep Text Only or Keep Source Formatting.
- Restart Word: Close Word completely (end the process if needed) and reopen it. Then try again.
- Restart the device: A full reboot clears hung clipboard services and stuck add-ins more reliably than switching tabs.
- Test with a plain source: Copy from Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (macOS) into Word. If it works, your issue is likely source-specific formatting or an app integration.
- Try a different paste location: Click into a normal paragraph in the document body and try pasting again (not inside a header/footer, textbox, or table cell).
- Check whether paste is blocked by protection: If the file is opened in Protected View, try enabling editing after verification (details below).
Common causes and how to confirm them
Most Word copy/paste failures fall into a few repeatable categories. You can confirm which one you’re seeing with quick tests.
| Symptom | Likely cause | How to confirm fast |
|---|---|---|
| Paste inserts nothing | Clipboard not updating, blocked paste action, or Word setting | See if paste works in Notepad/TextEdit from the same copy |
| Paste button is greyed out | Protected View, selection type, or disabled editing | Check file banner: Protected View / Read-only |
| Paste works for plain text but not rich content | Formatting incompatibility or content type restrictions | Try Paste Special > Keep Text Only |
| Only one document fails | Document protection, section restrictions, damaged template | Try a new blank document and copy into it |
| Only fails on a work/school PC | Policy restricting clipboard actions | Try on another account/device; ask IT if policies exist |
Fixes for Microsoft Word on Windows
Use these steps in order. They target the most common Word-for-Windows clipboard and paste blockers first.
1) Enable editing if the file is in Protected View
If Word shows a banner like Protected View and doesn’t let you edit, paste may be blocked.
- Open Word and the affected file.
- Look for a yellow/orange security banner near the top.
- Click Enable Editing (or Enable Content if shown), then try paste again.
2) Use Paste Options instead of plain paste
When the clipboard contains content Word can’t render cleanly, switching paste mode often fixes it.
- Select where you want the content.
- Home > Paste (dropdown arrow).
- Try Keep Text Only or Keep Source Formatting.
3) Paste Special (force the text format)
Paste Special is reliable when the source includes complex formatting, embedded objects, or unsupported content types.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- In Word, place the cursor in the target location.
- Go to Home > Paste > Paste Special (or press Ctrl+Alt+V).
- Choose Unformatted Text or Text depending on what you see.
- Click OK, then test.
4) Check whether Word is locked or the document is protected
If the document is protected, paste may be disabled or limited to certain areas.
- Open the document.
- Review the status bar and look for Read-only.
- Go to Review > Restrict Editing.
- If editing is restricted, remove protection if you have permission (you’ll need the password if set).
5) Disable Word add-ins (common culprit)
Add-ins frequently intercept clipboard operations. Disabling them helps you confirm whether Word is the problem.
- Open Word.
- Go to File > Options.
- Select Add-ins.
- At the bottom, next to Manage: choose COM Add-ins and click Go….
- Uncheck all add-ins and click OK.
- Restart Word and test copy/paste.
6) Start Word in Safe Mode
Safe Mode isolates Word from add-ins and customizations.

Fixes for Microsoft Word on macOS
macOS Word behaves similarly but the UI and safe mode steps differ. Follow these in order.
1) Quit and relaunch Word
Sometimes the clipboard handshake gets stuck. Quit Word completely, reopen, and test again.
2) Try Paste Options and Paste and Match Style
macOS paste compatibility issues often fix with the right paste command.
- Select a paste target inside a normal paragraph.
- Try Edit > Paste.
- If available, try Edit > Paste and Match Style or use the paste dropdown if shown.
3) Test in a new blank document
If the issue is only in one file, you’ll isolate quickly.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Copy from the same source and paste into the new file.
4) Disable add-ins (macOS)
macOS Word add-ins can still interfere with paste. Disabling them is a fast confirmation step.
- Open Word.
- Go to Tools > Add-ins.
- Uncheck/disable all add-ins.
- Restart Word and test.
5) Use Word Safe Mode
Safe Mode on macOS bypasses add-ins and startup templates.
- Quit Word.
- Hold Option and open Word.
- Word may prompt you to start in Safe Mode; confirm and test.
6) Check Full Disk Access / security permissions (advanced)
If copy/paste is blocked only for certain apps or sources, macOS privacy permissions could be involved. Review System Settings > Privacy & Security for app permissions, especially for file access-related workflows.
Fixes when the problem is with the clipboard (Windows)
If copy and paste fails across apps (not just Word), the clipboard or related services are the primary issue.

Clear and reset clipboard history
Windows Clipboard History can get into a broken state, especially after crashes or remote sessions.
- Open Settings > System > Clipboard.
- Turn Clipboard history Off.
- Restart the PC.
- Turn Clipboard history back On (optional), then retest copy/paste in Word.
Restart Windows clipboard-related processes
If you can’t wait for a full reboot, restarting services can help.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Find and restart Windows Explorer (right-click > Restart).
- Test copy/paste again in Word.
Disable clipboard manager apps and third-party utilities
Utilities that extend clipboard features (many “clipboard sync” apps) sometimes conflict with Word’s paste pipeline.
- Close those apps (including any overlay tools).
- Test copy/paste in Word again.
- If it works, uninstall or update the conflicting tool and re-test.
Fixes when the problem is source-specific (web, PDFs, apps)
Sometimes Word isn’t broken; the content you’re copying is. Different sources produce different clipboard formats (HTML, RTF, plain text, images, or embedded objects).

Browser content often includes hidden layout and scripts. Try copying only text, then use Paste Special.
- Highlight only the text you need.
- Right-click > Copy.
- In Word, use Home > Paste dropdown > Keep Text Only.
- If that fails, use Paste Special and choose Unformatted Text.
Copying from PDFs
PDF text is often not real text on the clipboard—it can be vector shapes or special objects.
- Try selecting the PDF text and using the PDF viewer’s copy.
- In Word, paste using Keep Text Only.
- If paste still fails, extract text from the PDF via a proper OCR or copy workflow before importing into Word.
Copying tables and formatting
Tables are the most common “it pastes, but it’s wrong” scenario. Paste Special often helps, as does converting to plain text and reformatting.
- Paste using Keep Text Only.
- Rebuild the table using Word’s Table tools (Insert > Table) or Word’s conversion options.
Fixes for copy/paste restrictions (work or school accounts)
Some environments restrict clipboard usage for security. If you’re on a managed device, copy/paste might be disabled in specific apps or contexts.

- If the behavior matches a policy, contact IT with your symptoms and app version.
Validate whether remote sessions affect clipboard
Remote Desktop (RDP) and VDI setups sometimes alter clipboard behavior or limit clipboard sharing.
- Test copy/paste locally in Word (on the host device) if possible.
- If using RDP, check the session settings for “clipboard redirection.”
Safe-mode and add-in troubleshooting
If quick checks didn’t solve it, confirm whether an add-in is the root cause. This is the most efficient “binary search” approach.
Use Safe Mode to confirm Word-only problems
If paste works in Safe Mode, the problem is almost certainly an add-in, template, or customization.
Disable add-ins in batches
Once you know paste works in Safe Mode, re-enable add-ins one by one until it breaks again.
- Return to File > Options > Add-ins (Windows) or Tools > Add-ins (macOS).
- Enable half the add-ins, restart Word, and test.
- If the problem returns, disable that half and try the other half.
- Repeat until you find the specific add-in.
Update add-ins and Office
After you isolate the add-in, update it. An older build can break clipboard integration after an Office update.

Reset Word settings
A corrupted Word settings file can stop paste behavior or break ribbon controls.
- Close Word.
- Press Win+R.
- Type:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Templatesand press Enter. - Rename any custom templates you suspect, then reopen Word and test.
If you use custom templates heavily, rename rather than delete—then test with and without them.

Start with a clean template
If copy/paste fails only in one document type, test with a brand-new blank document based on the default template.
- Create a new Word document.
- Copy/paste the same content.
When copy/paste works in Word but not everywhere (or vice versa)
Different behavior patterns point to different owners of the problem.
- Pastes fail in all apps: Clipboard/OS issue. Focus on Windows clipboard history, reboot, and third-party clipboard utilities.
- Pastes fail only in Word: Word add-ins, document protection, Protected View, or Word settings. Focus on add-ins and Safe Mode.
- Pastes into Word fail, but paste into other editors works: Source format mismatch. Use Paste Special and Paste Options like Keep Text Only.
- Pastes only fail for one file: Document corruption or protection. Test with a new blank document and compare.

FAQs about copy and paste not working in Microsoft Word
Why does paste fail only when I copy from a website?
Web pages often copy as HTML with scripts or layout components Word may not accept. Try Home > Paste dropdown > Keep Text Only, or use Paste Special (Ctrl+Alt+V) to paste unformatted text.
Does Protected View disable copy and paste?
Yes. When Word opens a file in Protected View, editing actions (including paste in many cases) can be restricted. Look for the security banner and choose Enable Editing if you trust the file source.
Could Microsoft Word add-ins be the reason?
Definitely. COM Add-ins (Windows) and Word add-ons (macOS) can intercept clipboard operations. Safe Mode is the quickest way to confirm, then you can disable add-ins to identify the offender.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy does copy work but paste doesn’t (and it affects other apps too)?
If other apps also can’t paste, it’s usually the system clipboard. Clear clipboard history, reboot, and temporarily disable clipboard manager utilities.
What should I do if none of these fixes work?
Run Office repair (Quick Repair, then Online Repair on Windows), then reset Word settings/templates. If the behavior is consistent only under a managed account, involve your IT admin because policies can block clipboard operations.
Bottom Line
When copy and paste stops working in Microsoft Word, don’t guess—identify whether it’s a Word-only issue, a document protection issue, a clipboard/OS issue, or a source-format issue. Start with Protected View and Paste Options, then use Safe Mode and add-in disabling to isolate the real culprit.
Most cases clear up with one or two targeted steps. If you still hit a wall, Office repair and a clean template test are the most dependable “last mile” fixes for 2024-era Word installations.
