JPG files can become damaged when data is interrupted or altered while the image is being saved, copied, downloaded, or stored. A file with the wrong extension can also look unreadable even when its image data is intact. Start by checking whether one file or several are affected, confirming the file’s actual format, and looking for an untouched original or backup before trying repairs.
What JPG damage looks like—and what it does not prove
A JPEG may refuse to open, show only part of an image, or display gray or scrambled areas. These symptoms can result from missing or altered image data, but they do not identify the cause by themselves. A file that fails in one application may instead be affected by that app or its display path; compare it in another trusted image viewer before concluding the file itself is damaged.

Also distinguish a damaged JPEG from a file whose name ends in .jpg but whose contents are another format. Adobe notes that an extension that does not match the file’s actual format can prevent Photoshop from identifying it correctly. Adobe’s guidance on the Invalid JPEG Marker error explains this mismatch. Renaming the extension is appropriate only after you establish the actual format.
Common reasons a JPG becomes damaged
An interrupted save or camera-card write
If a camera loses power or a memory card is removed while a photo is being written, the saved file may be incomplete. A crash while an application is saving can cause a similar problem. A JPEG-specific guide describes these as possible causes, not as a measure of how frequently they occur. If several photos from one card are affected, preserve what remains and avoid relying on that card until you have checked it or replaced it.

An interrupted copy or download
Disconnecting a cable, cancelling a copy, or losing the connection during a download can leave an incomplete file at the destination. If the original is still available and opens correctly, make a fresh copy from it rather than trying to repair the incomplete destination file.
Storage problems or insufficient space
A drive or removable device that returns altered or incomplete data can affect saved images. A full storage device can also prevent a write from completing. When failures recur, investigate the storage path and available space instead of repeatedly editing damaged copies.

Application, software, or graphics issues
A failure in a particular program does not, by itself, establish that the JPEG bytes are damaged. Try opening the file in another trusted viewer and consider whether a recent software or graphics-related change coincides with the problem. Adobe advises investigating shared hardware and software when multiple files are corrupted or recovery fails. Adobe’s damaged-file guidance covers recovery and troubleshooting for Photoshop files.

Safe first steps before attempting repair
- Leave the original untouched. Make a working copy before trying repairs or changing the filename.
- Look for a backup or earlier version. Open the backed-up copy to verify it, then save any recovered version under a new name. Adobe recommends checking a backup before using it as the recovered file.
- Check the scope. Determine whether one image or several fail, and whether the affected files share a device, location, or time of failure.
- Verify the format. A filename suffix alone does not establish what format the file contains; confirm that before correcting an extension.
- Retry from an intact source. If the original photo or source file remains available, create a fresh copy rather than working on the questionable copy.
- Protect other files if failures recur. Stop depending on a suspect card or drive until you have preserved its other contents and checked the storage device.
Recovery depends on what data remains. A repair tool cannot be assumed to reconstruct image data that is missing, and there is no universal repair method or success rate established for every kind of JPEG damage.

How to reduce the chance of future damage
- Keep a second copy of important photos and verify that backups open.
- Do not remove a camera card or disconnect storage during a save or transfer.
- Allow enough free space before saving images.
- If multiple files fail, investigate the shared device, storage location, and software rather than repeatedly changing the affected copies.
- For important saves, prefer a safer local location over a network share when practical; Adobe cautions that network shares can be more vulnerable during saving.
The JPEG Committee’s overview of JPEG systems provides standards context for JPEG formats and related transport and metadata, but a file’s visible symptoms alone are not enough to diagnose a specific failure.
