The apparent issue was whether the event had the required approval and licenses—not a clearly announced statewide ban on robot fights. The order is reported by Futurism based on a letter the organizer posted; the available sources do not independently authenticate the document or settle whether California’s combat-sport law covers this format.
What happened at the reported robot cage fight?
Futurism reported on October 2, 2026, that Robot Entertainment Kombat (REK) hosted what it described as California’s first human-on-robot cage fight in mid-September. According to the report, a human handler controlled the robot while a human performer dramatized the strikes, making the bout a staged entertainment event rather than a contest between autonomous machines.

Futurism says the California State Athletic Commission apparently sent a cease-and-desist letter addressed to people holding, promoting, advertising, or sponsoring unsanctioned human-versus-humanoid-robot cage fights. REK founder Cix Liv reportedly posted the letter on social media. The report says it directed organizers to stop hosting and promoting such events and threatened a misdemeanor charge. Liv wrote, “We made it boys.” The case-specific account and the letter’s contents are reported by Futurism; the available sources do not independently establish that the Commission served or authenticated the document.
Why did officials reportedly intervene?
As Futurism characterized the letter, the concern was that the event lacked required permits or prior approval under existing combat-sport rules. That is different from an explicit ruling that human-robot bouts are prohibited as a category. The report also noted that the Commission could withhold approval on a case-by-case basis under the law it cited; that legal implication remains the report’s characterization, not a definitive ruling on robot fights.

What does California’s combat-sport law say?
California Business and Professions Code section 18640, quoted in the Commission’s June 20, 2011 meeting materials, gives the Commission authority over specified boxing, kickboxing, and full-contact martial-arts contests and exhibitions in the state. The passage states:
“The commission has the sole direction, management, control of, and jurisdiction over all professional and amateur boxing, professional and amateur kickboxing, all forms and combinations of forms of full contact martial arts contests, including mixed martial arts, and matches or exhibitions conducted, held, or given within this state. No event shall take place without the prior approval of the commission. No person shall engage in the promotion of, or participate in, a boxing or martial arts contest, match, or exhibition without a license, and except in accordance with this chapter and the rules adopted hereunder.”

- Staff verify an event using evidence such as online material or a flyer.
- Staff contact the venue and organizer and explain the applicable legal requirements.
- Staff prepare a cease-and-desist letter; the procedure also describes inspector service and coordination with local law enforcement when needed.
These steps show how the Commission’s general procedure handles events it considers unregulated. They do not, by themselves, confirm the service, enforcement history, or legal basis of the reported REK letter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are robot cage fights illegal in California?
The sources support a narrower answer than a categorical yes or no. The Commission’s materials require prior approval and licensing for the specified combat-sport contests and exhibitions within its jurisdiction. Futurism reported that the Commission appeared to invoke those rules against REK’s event. But the statutory language cited does not name robots, and the available sources do not settle how it applies to this particular format. The report therefore does not establish that California has banned all robot cage fights.
