Bluetooth audio that suddenly sounds worse usually points to a changing condition—not necessarily broken headphones. Distance, nearby wireless activity, streaming problems, a second connected device, or a setting or driver can all affect playback. The fastest way to find the cause is to change one thing at a time: compare streamed audio with a downloaded track, test another source or headset, move closer, and disconnect any secondary device.
First, identify what “worse” means
Notice whether playback cuts out, skips, crackles, or becomes consistently muffled. Intermittent dropouts often call for checking the connection or wireless environment; a steady change in clarity is a reason to inspect the selected output and settings. These are clues, not definitive diagnoses: a controlled comparison is more useful than assuming the headphones have failed.

Run quick tests to isolate the cause
- Compare local and streamed audio. Play a track stored on the device, then compare it with streaming audio. Apple notes that wireless headphones may lose connection more often with streamed audio than with content stored on the device (Apple Support). Samsung also identifies online streaming connection status as a possible influence on sound quality (Samsung Support UK). If local playback is steady but streaming is not, investigate the app or network before changing headset settings.
- Move closer to the source. Test in the same room with a clear path between device and headphones. If that helps, distance or an obstructed or busy wireless environment may be involved.
- Temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth devices. If the headphones support multipoint, disconnect the second paired source for the test. Bose notes that a secondary connected device may try to send notification audio and interrupt listening (Bose Support).
- Compare devices. Try the headphones with another source, or try a different headset with the original source. Bose recommends this comparison to help determine which side is responsible (Bose Support).
- Refresh the connection. Charge the headphones, restart Bluetooth on the source device, and reconnect. If the issue remains, use the headphones’ model-specific support instructions rather than assuming a generic reset procedure applies.
If audio cuts out, skips, or crackles
Start with the source nearby and an unobstructed path, then repeat the test away from crowded wireless areas. Sony identifies busy places such as trains and roads as environments where headphone communication may be interrupted (Sony Support). On a Windows computer, Microsoft says an unshielded USB device near a USB 3.0 port can sometimes interfere with Bluetooth; move the device or receiver away and test again (Microsoft Support).
If only streamed audio cuts out, compare it with a locally stored track before changing Bluetooth settings. If both fail, continue with the distance, interference, multipoint, and device-comparison tests above.

If sound becomes muffled or noticeably lower quality
Check whether the change coincides with microphone use—for example, after joining a call or enabling voice input. Temporarily stop using the microphone and compare playback. A difference makes microphone activity worth investigating, but it does not by itself establish a universal cause: behavior can depend on the operating system, headset, and application.
On Windows, also check that the intended headphones are selected as the playback output and inspect their available audio format. Microsoft recommends trying 2-channel, 16-bit, 48,000 Hz where that option is available; this is Windows-specific guidance, not a universal setting (Microsoft Support).

Windows menus and device support vary by version and hardware. Microsoft’s guidance for Windows 10 and 11 includes these checks:

- Open Settings > System > Sound and select the intended Bluetooth headphones as the output device.
- In the device’s available output-format settings, try 2 channels, 16 bit, 48,000 Hz, if offered.
- Remove the headphones from Bluetooth devices, then pair them again.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on, then reconnect the headphones.
- Check for an updated Bluetooth driver using the instructions for the computer’s manufacturer.
- If the connection keeps dropping, check Windows power-saving settings. Microsoft’s Bluetooth disconnection guidance points to Energy Saver and device power-management settings as possible factors (Microsoft Support).

When a headset-specific reset or service makes sense
If the problem follows the headphones across more than one source, consult the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance includes connection, environment, Bluetooth cache, and streaming-status checks, but cache steps are specific to its supported devices and instructions (Samsung Support UK). If another headset also sounds poor on the same source, focus on that source’s app, settings, or Bluetooth connection. Consider replacement only after these comparisons suggest a fault or incompatibility.
