Why Blockchain Transactions Slow Down—and What to Do While You Wait

A pending transaction is not necessarily a failed one. Check its network and status, then weigh waiting against network-specific replacement or cancellation options.

A pending transaction has usually been broadcast but not yet included in a block; that does not by itself mean it failed. Check its status and network first. On Ethereum, you can wait, try a higher-fee replacement, or attempt cancellation while the original is still pending—but a fee increase costs more and cannot guarantee prompt inclusion. Bitcoin and other networks use different rules, so do not apply an Ethereum fix across chains.

What “pending” means—and what it does not

Sending a transaction is not the same as having it confirmed. On Ethereum, a submitted transaction is broadcast and enters a pool of pending transactions. A validator must select it and include it in a block before the transaction is considered successful. Ethereum.org distinguishes that inclusion from later milestones called justification and finalization, which increase confidence that the result will remain in the chain.

Stage What it tells you
Submitted Your wallet has prepared or sent a transaction. This alone does not prove it reached the network.
Pending The transaction has not yet been confirmed. A wallet may show a local pending entry even if the transaction has not propagated as expected.
Included or confirmed The transaction has been placed in a block. On Ethereum, this is the point at which it is considered successful, although later chain milestones can add confidence.
Failed The network or wallet reports that the transaction did not succeed. Check the specific transaction details rather than treating every delay as a failure.
Justified or finalized Ethereum chain milestones after inclusion that increase confidence in the transaction’s permanence.

These labels are not interchangeable, and other blockchains may use different status terminology and confirmation rules. There is no dependable universal wait-time estimate: congestion, fee conditions, network design, wallet behavior, and transaction type all matter. A pending label is a reason to investigate, not a promise that it will clear within a fixed number of minutes.

Why transactions slow down

Validators choose which transactions to include

Transactions compete for inclusion in blocks. On Ethereum, every transaction needs a fee, and Ethereum.org explains that fees change with network congestion. A fee that was competitive when you submitted may be too low for the demand that follows. If the fee is below what the network is currently willing to process, the transaction can wait in the pending pool.

Ethereum fees reflect more than the amount sent

Ethereum’s fee calculation involves the base fee set by the network, an optional priority fee intended to incentivize inclusion, and the gas used by the action. Gas measures the computational work a transaction requires; it is not itself a price in currency. A basic ETH transfer generally takes less gas than a smart-contract interaction, and contract calls can vary in complexity. Consequently, two transactions sent for the same token amount can have different fees.

Ethereum.org gives illustrative gas-use examples: sending ETH, 21,000 gas; sending ERC-20 tokens, 65,000 gas; transferring an NFT, 84,904 gas; and swapping on Uniswap, 184,523 gas. These are examples of gas units, not fee prices or guaranteed requirements. Actual contract implementations and transaction conditions can differ; the figures do not tell you what a transaction will cost at a particular moment.

Wallet display and network state can differ

A wallet’s history is the first place to check, but a local pending entry does not always establish that the transaction is visible across the network. MetaMask’s pending-transaction guidance recommends determining whether the transaction remains only in the local mempool or has been broadcast to the network. Where the network provides an explorer, look up the transaction hash there as well. A missing or unrecognized hash is not proof that funds are permanently lost; it means you should verify the network and wallet state before signing another transaction.

Check the transaction before changing anything

  1. Open the wallet’s transaction history. Select the relevant entry and note the network, status, transaction hash, recipient, amount, and fee details shown. Do not rely on a notification alone.
  2. Confirm the network matches the transaction. A transaction on one chain will not be sped up by changing fees or settings on another chain.
  3. Look up the hash on the appropriate network explorer, if available. Compare its status with the wallet. The explorer can help determine whether the transaction is network-visible and whether it has been included or failed.
  4. Check for earlier pending Ethereum transactions from the same account. Ethereum transactions are ordered by nonce. A later transaction may be unable to proceed while an earlier nonce remains unresolved, so deal with the oldest pending transaction first.
  5. Decide whether you can wait or need to act. Consider the transaction’s current state, whether the wallet supports a replacement action, the additional fee, and how urgently settlement is needed.

If the transaction is already confirmed successfully, do not try to cancel it: confirmation cannot be undone through a wallet cancellation control. If the wallet says pending but the explorer shows a confirmed transaction, rely on the network record and investigate any separate issue, such as a recipient not recognizing the payment.

What to do with a pending Ethereum transaction

Option 1: Wait

Waiting avoids paying more to replace the transaction. Ethereum.org’s FAQ describes waiting until the network is willing to process transactions at the chosen price. This can be sensible if the payment is not urgent and the fee you selected remains acceptable. Neither a wallet nor the cited guidance can guarantee when the network will include it, so avoid treating a published time estimate or an old fee screenshot as a promise.

Option 2: Use the wallet’s speed-up feature

Ethereum.org describes resubmitting the same transaction with a higher gas fee. MetaMask’s extension guidance describes a speed-up action that reuses the same nonce. The replacement is intended to take the place of the pending transaction rather than become a second separately completed payment, but signing the replacement still means accepting its fee. A higher fee increases spending; it does not guarantee immediate inclusion or acceptance by every node.

  1. Open the pending transaction in the wallet and check that it is on Ethereum and has not already confirmed.
  2. If the wallet currently offers a speed-up action, review the replacement transaction details and fee it proposes.
  3. Compare the fee with current network conditions using a current network fee tracker rather than copying a static number from an old guide.
  4. Only approve the replacement if the recipient, value, network, nonce, and fee are correct and you accept the added cost.

Wallet interfaces and supported networks can change. MetaMask’s custom replacement instructions include fee-increase examples as procedural guidance, not as universal thresholds or a guarantee that a replacement will be accepted or mined quickly. Use the wallet’s current official instructions for the exact controls available to your account.

Option 3: Attempt cancellation while it is still pending

Ethereum.org describes a cancellation attempt using a zero-value transaction to your own address with the same nonce. MetaMask also documents an in-app cancellation or a custom-nonce replacement. These actions attempt to replace the pending transaction; they are not a way to reverse one that has already been included. A cancellation may fail to replace the original, and the replacement transaction itself can incur a fee.

  1. Verify that the original transaction is still pending, not confirmed.
  2. Use the wallet’s current cancellation instructions for the network. If the wallet requires a custom replacement, follow its official guidance rather than guessing a nonce or fee.
  3. Before signing, check the network, recipient, value, nonce, and fee. A zero-value cancellation transaction is not the same as sending the original payment again.
  4. Check the resulting transaction status using the wallet and, where available, the network explorer.

If several Ethereum transactions are pending, resolve the earliest nonce first. Later transactions can remain blocked behind it. Avoid repeatedly submitting replacements without checking the latest state: you could pay additional fees without resolving the underlying queue.

Bitcoin replacement is different from Ethereum replacement

Bitcoin’s BIP 125 describes opt-in full Replace-by-Fee signaling. Under this policy, nodes may allow a transaction that signals replacement to be replaced in their mempool, subject to relay-policy and fee conditions. The BIP does not guarantee that every node, wallet, or service will apply identical rules. A recipient may also choose not to treat a payment as received until it is confirmed.

This is not Ethereum’s same-nonce replacement procedure. If a Bitcoin transaction is pending, use the sending wallet’s current guidance and consider the receiving service’s confirmation policy. Do not create an Ethereum-style replacement or assume that a fee bump will work unless the Bitcoin wallet and transaction support the relevant replacement behavior.

When the account belongs to an exchange

If you initiated the transaction from an exchange-controlled account, the exchange controls the platform account and its transaction tools. Ethereum.org directs users in that situation to contact the exchange’s support team. A self-custody wallet’s replacement controls may not apply to an exchange account, and creating another withdrawal request may not cancel the first one.

For a self-custody account, consult the wallet provider’s official instructions. Never give a seed phrase to someone claiming they can recover funds or unstick a transaction. Ethereum.org warns that legitimate support will not ask for it.

Reduce fee surprises on future transactions

  • Check current network conditions before sending. Ethereum fees vary with congestion; a previously used fee is not a reliable guide to present conditions.
  • Match the network to the task. Ethereum.org says Layer 2 networks can offer lower fees and handle more transactions. They may suit a future transaction that does not need to happen on Ethereum mainnet. Choosing a different network does not move or accelerate a transaction already pending on another network.
  • Allow for the type of action. A contract interaction may use more gas than a simple ETH transfer. Review the wallet’s fee estimate for the actual action rather than assuming that all transfers cost the same.
  • Keep track of pending transactions. On Ethereum, unresolved earlier nonces can hold up later transactions from the same account. Check the oldest pending transaction before submitting another.

How to choose: wait, speed up, or cancel

Your situation Practical choice Important limitation
The transaction is not urgent and the current fee is acceptable. Wait and monitor its state. There is no guaranteed inclusion time.
An Ethereum transaction is pending, urgency justifies added cost, and the wallet offers a replacement. Consider the wallet’s speed-up feature after checking the replacement details. A higher fee costs more and does not guarantee prompt inclusion.
You want to stop an Ethereum transaction that is still pending. Attempt the wallet-supported cancellation or same-nonce replacement. Cancellation is only an attempt while pending; it cannot reverse a confirmed transaction.
A Bitcoin transaction is unconfirmed. Check the wallet’s Bitcoin-specific replacement support and recipient policy. BIP 125 describes opt-in relay policy, not universal implementation or guaranteed replacement.
The wallet is exchange-controlled or the transaction state is unclear. Contact the platform’s support team or consult the wallet’s official help. Do not share a seed phrase with purported support.

The key decision is not simply whether a transaction has taken “too long.” First establish which network it is on and whether it is still pending, network-visible, confirmed, or failed. Then weigh urgency against the cost and uncertainty of a replacement. No general-purpose trick can make a validator include a particular transaction, and network-specific replacement rules should be followed only through the wallet that supports them.
