A benchmark of four models on “the Bash macOS still ships” cannot support a model ranking unless its results and test conditions are available. The title alone does not identify the models, tasks, machine, Bash executable, harness error, or scores. What can be established is that Apple’s current Terminal guide names zsh as the default login shell, while Apple’s public Bash source repository contains a Bash 3.2 source tree. Those facts make it important to distinguish the system Bash executable from the shell a Terminal session starts.
What does “the Bash macOS still ships” mean?
It does not necessarily mean Bash is the default shell in Terminal. Apple’s current Terminal User Guide says, “The default shell is zsh,” and explains that Terminal can be configured to open a different shell by its complete path. A Mac can therefore have a Bash executable available while a new Terminal window starts in zsh.

Apple’s public Bash source repository contains a Bash 3.2 source tree. That establishes an Apple-maintained or distributed 3.2 source line; it does not prove which Bash executable is installed on every Mac, or which executable a particular test invoked. Check the actual path and version before attributing a result to “macOS Bash.”
Why can a Bash script work on one Mac but fail on another?
Shell compatibility depends on the interpreter that runs the script, not just the computer’s operating system. Scripts can rely on Bash-specific syntax or features, while the default interactive shell may be a different shell. Even two Bash invocations may resolve to different executable paths or versions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The GNU Bash Reference Manual, Edition 5.3, documents indexed and associative arrays. It describes indexed arrays as zero-based and associative arrays as using arbitrary strings, with empty strings unavailable as associative keys. Those details describe Bash 5.3; they do not establish when each feature first appeared or whether a particular Mac’s Bash supports it. The GNU project describes Bash as an sh-compatible shell, but that does not mean every Bash-specific script runs in every shell.
When comparing two environments, check:
- The exact interpreter path and version used to execute the script.
- The macOS release and whether Terminal starts zsh or a separately selected shell.
- Whether the script depends on Bash-specific syntax or features.
How to verify which shell and Bash executable you are using
- Check the current shell: run
echo "$SHELL"to see the configured login-shell path. This does not, by itself, identify every shell process or executable started later. - Check Bash directly: run
/bin/bash --versionto inspect the version reported by that path. - Check the command resolved by your current session: run
command -v bash, then use the returned path with--version. This can distinguish the system path from a separately installed Bash. - Run the script with the intended interpreter: use an explicit interpreter path when testing, rather than assuming Terminal’s default shell is Bash.
For reproducibility, report both the shell session and the interpreter that actually executed the script. A login shell setting is not a substitute for recording the executable path used by a test.

What can be concluded from the four-model benchmark claim?
The available benchmark details do not establish the four model names or versions, task set, prompts, harness error, machine, run count, scoring method, or results. No score, pass rate, runtime, or ranking can responsibly be inferred from the title.
A harness failure matters because its timing determines whether any result is meaningful. If it failed before model calls, there may be no model outputs to compare. If it failed during evaluation, outputs might exist but remain unscored or inconsistently scored. In either case, incomplete measurements are not evidence that one model performed better than another.

What a reproducible benchmark report needs
Before treating a four-model test as a comparison, publish enough detail for a reader to understand what ran and where it failed:
- All four model names and versions.
- The exact tasks and prompts, plus the harness code and version.
- Error logs and the failure point: before model calls, during calls, or during scoring.
- macOS release, hardware, and the exact Bash executable path and version.
- Run count, scoring criteria, exclusions, and any reruns.
If the harness did not produce valid, consistently scored measurements, the accurate report is that no valid comparative result was produced—not a model ranking.
