A background noise remover that sounds convincing on a clean demo can still struggle with ordinary recordings. Its result depends on the noise, room, speaker, microphone, processing method and intended use. To judge one fairly, test varied real-world inputs and listen for both what it removes and what it damages—not just whether the noise gets quieter.
What noise suppression does—and what it does not
Speech enhancement starts with microphone audio containing speech and unwanted sound, then estimates how to reduce the unwanted components while retaining speech. That estimate is imperfect: reducing noise can also soften speech, alter its natural texture or create audible artifacts. A demo on one recording shows how the system handled that recording, not how it will handle every room or speaker.

Noise suppression and echo cancellation address different problems. Suppression reduces unwanted sounds in the microphone input. Echo cancellation reduces sound that plays through a speaker and then returns through the microphone. Azure Communication Services documents them as separate real-time audio effects; enabling one should not be treated as a substitute for the other.

Why performance changes with real-world inputs
Noise type and level
A steady fan, intermittent keyboard, nearby conversation, music and a sudden clatter are different signals to distinguish from speech. Their level relative to the voice matters too: a distant speaker with loud noise is a different test from a close speaker with quiet noise. Microsoft Teams’ guidance illustrates that controls can reflect this distinction: it describes low suppression for persistent sounds such as a fan or air conditioner, and high suppression for background sounds other than speech. It also treats music fidelity as a separate use case. These are Teams-specific behaviors, not universal settings for all systems.

Speaker, microphone and room
Speech varies with the person speaking, their distance and orientation, and the microphone’s position. Rooms add reverberation, while devices and microphone designs capture different balances of voice and surrounding sound. A system tuned or evaluated on one speaker and room may behave differently on another; changing a microphone or reconnecting it can also improve the input before processing. Microsoft’s Teams voice-isolation troubleshooting advises trying those steps, but does not establish that a particular microphone type removes environmental noise.
Speech pauses and unexpected sounds
Testing only continuous speech misses what happens during pauses, when a suppressor may reduce the room tone, leave residual noise or react noticeably as speech begins again. Intermittent noise and abrupt events can expose different weaknesses from a continuous fan. Include silence, pauses and changing noise in the test material, not just a long uninterrupted sentence.

How to evaluate a background noise remover with realistic inputs
Build a test set that varies the conditions a real user will encounter. The INTERSPEECH 2020 DNS Challenge paper is a useful example of that principle: it describes synthetic and recorded noisy speech, including office and conference-room recordings, selected AudioSet clips and crowdsourced recordings captured in varied noisy settings with different devices, including headphones and speakerphones. Its blind synthetic test set also included unseen speech, noise and room impulse responses. That dataset demonstrates the value of varied conditions; it does not prove that any particular model will generalize to every environment.

| Dimension | Useful cases to include | What the variation can reveal |
|---|---|---|
| Noise | Fan or air conditioner, traffic, typing, chatter, music and abrupt sounds | Whether performance changes between steady, speech-like, tonal and transient noise |
| Speech-to-noise balance | Different noise levels and speaker distances | Whether quieter or more distant speech is preserved when noise competes with it |
| Capture conditions | Different speakers, microphones, devices and rooms | How sensitive results are to voice, input hardware and reverberation |
| Timing | Continuous noise, intermittent noise, silence and speech pauses | How the system behaves when speech stops, resumes or overlaps with changing noise |
| Processing mode | Live processing and offline cleanup, where both are relevant | Whether quality, responsiveness or resource use changes with the intended workflow |
Listen for several outcomes
Do not score a result only by how much quieter the background sounds. Evaluate speech intelligibility and naturalness alongside residual noise and processing artifacts. Listen for missing or weakened speech sounds, unnatural changes in voice quality and noise that remains or fluctuates. Use listening tests as well as objective metrics; whenever reporting a metric, name the test set and metric so readers know what the score describes.

The shock mount reduces unwanted vibration, and the removable pop filter helps deliver cleaner voice recordings for gaming and streaming without blocking the gaming computer screen.
Keep the original input and processed output paired, and compare the same speech and noise conditions across systems. If the intended use is a live call, test it live and measure responsiveness and device resource use. If the use is offline cleanup, evaluate the cleaned recordings for that workflow instead. A score or listening impression from a different test set cannot establish which system will work best on your own recordings.
How implementation choices change the trade-offs
Enhancement methods differ in how they estimate and reduce unwanted sound. Some work with short-time spectral representations and estimate masks or filters. The 2021 DeepFilterNet paper describes a two-stage design: first enhancing a spectral envelope, then applying deep filtering to periodic speech components. RNNoise is a recurrent-neural-network noise-suppression library; its repository gives a command-line example accepting raw 16-bit mono PCM sampled at 48 kHz. These are examples of different implementation approaches, not evidence that either is best for every input or application.

What to check before putting suppression in a live audio path
Offline processing can spend more time on a recording than a live system can spend on each incoming segment. In a live path, buffering and processing add delay; the system also has to run within the available device resources and work with the application’s audio framework. DeepFilterNet treats latency and computational complexity as design considerations, while Azure Communication Services’ documentation shows that integration can depend on both its audio-effects package and the calling client.

- USB Plug&Play(1.8/6ft USB Cable) -- No driver required. Just need to plug & play for the microphone to start recording, well compatible with Windows(7, 8, 10 and 11) and macOS. (NOT compatible with Xbox/Raspberry Pi/Android)
- Solid Construction--Adopting premium metal pipe and heavy-duty ABS stand to make sure that you will be satisfied with our computer mic quality
- Input format: Confirm the sample rate and channel layout expected by the algorithm and the audio framework. For example, the RNNoise repository’s command-line example uses raw 16-bit mono PCM at 48 kHz; that example is not a general requirement for every integration.
- Latency and buffering: Measure the delay added by capture, buffering and processing in the actual live path. A system that sounds acceptable offline may not meet a call’s responsiveness needs.
- Compute and device support: Check processor or device load while processing the expected number of streams. Do not assume a result on one device predicts performance on another.
- Platform and versions: Verify current framework, browser, operating-system and SDK requirements in the documentation for the exact system being deployed. Microsoft’s Azure Communication Services documentation lists browser and SDK requirements, which can change; its page was accessed 2026-10-07.
- Privacy and data flow: Establish from current product documentation whether processing is local or involves another service. Microsoft says Teams processes audio and video locally, but that product-specific statement should not be generalized to other systems.
How to remove background noise from speech in practice
- Improve the captured input first. Position the speaker and microphone for a clear voice signal, then check connections and try another microphone if the input is poor. This is a troubleshooting step, not a replacement for suppression or a promise that a particular microphone eliminates room noise.
- Choose processing for the job. For calls, start with controls built into the calling application or SDK if they meet your integration needs. For a custom pipeline or offline work, evaluate a library or framework against the same recordings.
- Test the sounds and speakers that matter. Use the matrix above, including pauses and changing conditions, rather than relying on a clean demonstration or a single noise sample.
- Choose a setting from the result, not the label. Compare intelligibility, naturalness, residual noise and artifacts. In quiet studio conditions with a high-fidelity microphone, Microsoft’s Teams support guidance advises turning suppression off; that is Teams-specific advice, so check the controls and behavior of the system you use.
