Automatic frame-rate matching changes a streaming device’s video output to better match a film or show. Your TV may briefly go blank or flicker while it switches modes; if the picture does not return, or the signal keeps dropping, troubleshoot the device and HDMI chain. Matching can reduce judder caused by frame-rate conversion, so turning it off trades smoother transitions for potentially less natural motion.
Why frame-rate switching can cause a black screen
A streaming device can change its output refresh mode to match the frame rate of the content. The TV then has to resynchronize to the new signal. Apple warns that a blank screen or flickering may occur as Apple TV switches formats. Android Developers likewise says that some devices show a black screen for a second or two during refresh-rate switching. Apple notes that TVs respond differently and a mode switch may take a few seconds.

Those are vendor descriptions of possible interruptions, not timing guarantees. A short blank exactly when playback begins or the content changes format can be normal. A screen that stays blank, repeatedly loses signal, or goes black at unrelated times needs separate troubleshooting.

Video is made up of frames shown at a particular rate. When the display refresh rate and video frame rate do not align, the device or TV has to convert between them. Android’s frame-rate guidance explains that matching the display refresh rate to the video can avoid conversion artifacts such as 3:2 pulldown judder. The visible result depends on the content, device, app, and TV.

There is a tradeoff: matching may cause a brief transition when playback starts or the format changes, while leaving the output at a fixed rate can avoid some mode switches. But fixed-rate conversion may make motion look uneven. There is no universally best setting; choose based on whether you prefer source cadence or uninterrupted transitions, and how your TV handles conversion.
Choose the setting that suits your setup
| Choice | Potential benefit | Tradeoff or constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Enable frame-rate matching | Content can display at its original or corresponding cadence, reducing conversion judder. | The display may flash, flicker, or briefly go black during a mode change. |
| Disable frame-rate matching | Avoids some mode changes and may keep the interface at a steady output mode. | Frame-rate conversion can produce judder; results vary by TV and content. |
| Use Quick Media Switching, if supported | Can reduce delays when changing frame rates. | Requires compatible equipment. Apple says it works best when the switching formats use the same chroma. |
| Use a fixed refresh mode | May suit setups where consistent behavior matters and conversion looks acceptable. | A nonmatching mode can create judder or slow apps designed for another refresh rate. |
If you want original cadence and can accept brief transitions, keep matching enabled. If uninterrupted navigation matters more, try disabling it and compare motion on the content you watch. Android’s guidance describes the conversion tradeoff; NVIDIA also warns that on SHIELD, selecting a refresh rate other than 60Hz can slow activities designed for 60Hz, including the home page, games, and 60Hz video.

Android TV and NVIDIA SHIELD
Android devices and apps can handle frame-rate preferences differently, so a device-level setting does not prove every app uses matching. NVIDIA says Plex and Kodi support automatic matching on SHIELD. Its guidance also covers display-mode selection and the possibility that a non-60Hz mode can slow 60Hz-oriented activities: SHIELD TV refresh rate.
What to check when the screen stays black
- Check when the blank happens. If it occurs briefly as playback starts or content changes, the display may be resynchronizing to a new mode. If it persists, recurs outside those transitions, or the signal never returns, continue with the checks below.
- Confirm support in the app and device. Verify that the app and streaming device support frame-rate matching, and use instructions for the exact model and software. A matching setting on the device does not mean every app uses it.
- Compare with matching disabled. Temporarily switch it off and test the same content. If the blackouts stop but motion looks less smooth, that points toward a mode-switch tradeoff; it does not by itself identify a faulty component.
- Check resolution and the HDMI path. Review the source’s resolution and matching settings, the HDMI cable and TV port, and any receiver or HDMI switch between the device and TV. Apple includes HDMI setup and related checks in its Apple TV black-screen troubleshooting guidance. These are diagnostic categories, not proof that a particular part is defective.
- Check power and supported switching features. Confirm the source and connected equipment have power. If your equipment supports Apple’s Quick Media Switching, check whether it is enabled and whether the formats you switch between use the same chroma; Apple says QMS can reduce switching delays but does not apply to every setup.
- For SHIELD, check the selected display mode and app. If the home screen or other 60Hz-oriented activities slow down after choosing a different refresh rate, test the prior mode and observe whether the issue is limited to a particular app or content.
Replacing an HDMI cable is not an established fix for ordinary, brief blanking during a mode change. Consider a known-good compatible cable only if you are diagnosing persistent signal instability, and treat it as one check among several—not a guaranteed remedy.

When to leave matching on or turn it off
Leave matching on if preserving the content’s cadence matters more to you than a short resynchronization, and the picture returns reliably. Try it off if you prioritize uninterrupted transitions and your TV’s conversion produces acceptable motion. On SHIELD, also consider whether the chosen fixed refresh rate affects apps designed for a different rate.
