If only some characters blink while the rest of an Atari 2600 game stays steady, the flicker may be a deliberate programming trade-off: the console’s TIA has only two player graphics objects, so a game can reuse them for different characters on alternating frames. There is no universal console setting that adds more objects. If the entire picture flickers or rolls, that is a different symptom and cannot be diagnosed without details about the game, console, display, and connection.
Why do some Atari 2600 characters flicker?
The Atari 2600’s Television Interface Adaptor (TIA) draws graphics using a small set of objects: two players, two missiles, a ball, and a playfield. The 1979 Stella Programmer’s Guide describes those movable objects and explains that player graphics are supplied as eight-bit data, line by line. Andrew Towers’s Atari 2600 Programming for Newbies — Revised Edition also describes how game code updates player registers as the picture is drawn.

When a game needs to show more moving characters than its two player objects can represent at once, its software can assign those objects to different characters on alternating frames. That time-sharing, or multiplexing, is a plausible explanation for familiar character blinking given the documented hardware limits; it is not confirmation of how any particular game works. The implementation can vary by game, and the visual trade-off is not a setting the player can switch off.
The TIA draws the picture as the display is generated, so graphics are closely tied to scanlines. The programmer’s guide describes a common pattern of updating TIA registers every two scanlines, which constrains vertical movement and height resolution in that approach. A vertical-delay register can allow one-line movement in some cases. These are programming constraints, not player-facing controls.

First identify what is flickering
Before changing settings or considering repairs, compare the scope of the symptom, whether it happens in one game or several, and whether you are using original hardware or an emulator.
| What you see | What it may indicate | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| A few moving characters blink while the rest of the image is stable | Consistent with software reusing limited TIA player objects; that explanation is not confirmed for a particular game without game-specific evidence. | Note the game and platform. Do not expect a universal setting to eliminate it. |
| The emulator image looks uneven or juddery | Display presentation may be contributing to the impression. | Try Stella’s documented refresh-rate adaptation and phosphor options, then compare with the raw TIA image. |
| The whole image flickers, rolls, or drops out on original hardware | The references cited here do not identify the cause or establish a repair. | Record the console, game, display, connection, and exact symptom before seeking a diagnosis. |
What you can do as a player
On original hardware
If only individual game characters blink against a stable background, treat intentional multiplexing as one possible explanation. The TIA’s object limits cannot be expanded with a general console setting, and the available technical references do not establish a fix for any named game. If the whole image is unstable, gather the setup details in the table rather than assuming the game’s graphics are responsible.

- 4-Switch Wood Grain Model
In the Stella emulator
Stella’s documentation describes display refresh-rate adaptation to minimize judder and an optional phosphor mode that blends the image. These affect how the emulator presents the image; they do not change a game’s ROM or stop its software from reusing player objects. Try the options individually and compare the result with the raw TIA output so you can distinguish smoother presentation from a change to the game’s rendering.

If you are programming an Atari 2600 game
Plan around two player graphics objects as a limited resource for each scanline. If too many moving characters need them at once, possible design choices include:
- Reduce how many characters require player objects at the same time.
- Change character or scene designs to use fewer simultaneous moving objects.
- Reuse player objects across frames to display more characters, accepting that some may blink.
These are design options inferred from the documented TIA model, not tested solutions for a particular game. Whether they work well depends on the game’s graphics, timing, and desired visual trade-offs.
