A greyed-out song in Apple Music can mean different things: the track may be unavailable in your region, hidden, blocked by content restrictions, missing its original computer file, or waiting to sync. Start by checking the message beside the song. If you manage your library on a Mac or Windows PC, its Cloud Status can point to the right fix.
First, identify what kind of song is affected
The fix depends on where the track came from and whether one song or a larger part of your library is affected. A track bought from the iTunes Store, one added from the Apple Music catalogue, and a file imported from your computer do not fail for the same reasons.

- One purchased song: check the Apple Account used for the purchase and, on a computer, authorization to play iTunes Store purchases.
- One catalogue song: look for a message such as “No Longer Available” or a country-or-region warning.
- A song you imported: check whether the original file is still where the Music app expects it.
- Many songs across devices: check the account, Sync Library, and internet connection.
Apple’s troubleshooting guide lists these and other causes, including hidden songs and content restrictions.

“No Longer Available”
This means the song was removed from the Apple Music catalogue. Search Apple Music for another listing or version. If you find one, remove the unavailable entry from your library and add the alternative. Catalogue listings can change, so finding the same recording is not guaranteed.

“This item is not currently available in your country or region”
Apple Music availability varies by country and region. Check whether the track has an available listing for your region. If it does, remove the greyed-out entry and add the available version. Changing device settings cannot restore a recording that is not licensed or listed for your region.
The song is hidden
A hidden song can appear greyed out. Use your Apple Account or library controls to unhide it; the track may not be damaged or missing from the device. Apple’s guide to missing or greyed-out songs includes the relevant account and library instructions.
The song is explicit
Music restrictions set to Clean can block explicit tracks. If you are permitted to access explicit content, change the music restriction to Explicit in the device’s content or music restrictions. This will not help with songs greyed out for another reason.

A purchased song will not play
Confirm that the device is signed in to the Apple Account that bought the track. On a computer, the account may also need authorization to play iTunes Store purchases. If the purchase is missing, check the account’s purchases and redownload the song using Apple’s purchase and download instructions.
Check Cloud Status for a missing or unsynced computer file
If the song came from your own music files, use the Music app on a Mac or the Apple Music app on Windows to inspect its Cloud Status. In the Songs view, show the Cloud Status and Cloud Download columns. The status helps distinguish a missing original file from a sync delay or catalogue removal.
Exclamation point
The original file cannot be played or synced because the app cannot locate it. Select the item and use Locate to find the file. If it is gone, import it again from its original source.

Waiting
The song is waiting to sync. Put the computer holding the original file online, update Cloud Library, and allow time for the upload or sync. If it remains stuck, Apple suggests deleting the entry and importing the song again from the original source.
No Longer Available
If Cloud Status says No Longer Available, the track was in the Apple Music catalogue and has since been removed. Search for an alternative listing, remove the unavailable entry, and add the alternative if one is available.

- Make sure each device is signed in with the Apple Account associated with the Apple Music subscription.
- Confirm that Sync Library is enabled on each device and that the devices have internet access. Apple’s Sync Library setup instructions give device-specific steps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Windows.
- If your library starts on a computer, update Cloud Library on that computer first, then allow the synced devices to update.
If the issue continues, Apple suggests turning Sync Library off and back on across devices. Treat this as a later troubleshooting step, not a quick toggle: turning it off removes downloaded music, and a large library may take time to sync again. Back up your music library before changing the setting. Apple cautions that “Apple Music isn’t a backup service.”
What changes if your Apple Music subscription was cancelled?
After cancellation, Apple Music catalogue music and playlists tied to the catalogue or Sync Library are removed from devices other than the original computer where the library is downloaded. That is different from music bought from the iTunes Store: those purchases remain in your library. A subscription provides access to catalogue tracks; it does not turn those tracks into iTunes Store purchases.

If your original music files are on a computer, keep a backup before making library changes. An external drive can be a destination for that backup, but it will not fix a catalogue removal, account mismatch, content restriction, or regional availability issue. Apple explains the need to back up before changes in its missing or greyed-out songs guidance.
