Blue bubbles are iMessages. Green bubbles are messages sent through RCS, SMS, or MMS instead. Green does not by itself mean you were blocked, that the phone is broken, or that delivery failed. It identifies the messaging service used for that particular message.
Blue and green bubbles at a glance
| Bubble | Service | Connection and capabilities |
|---|---|---|
| Blue | iMessage | Uses Wi-Fi or cellular data; supports Apple-specific effects, read receipts, typing indicators, high-resolution media and end-to-end encryption between supported iMessage participants. |
| Green | RCS | Carrier-provided messaging; can support high-resolution photos and videos, links, delivery and read receipts, and typing indicators where the carrier and participants support them. |
| Green | SMS or MMS | Traditional carrier messaging. SMS is primarily text; MMS handles many photo, video and group messages. Features, limits and charges depend on the carrier and plan. |
Apple documents the differences between these services in its messaging comparison. Bubble color does not simply mean Wi-Fi versus cellular: iMessage can use either Wi-Fi or cellular data, while carrier services follow their own requirements.

Why a message to another iPhone can be green
An iPhone recipient does not guarantee an iMessage route. Common causes include:
- iMessage is turned off on your phone or the recipient’s phone.
- iMessage is temporarily unavailable, or one phone lacks a working Wi-Fi or cellular-data connection.
- The recipient recently changed phones, numbers, SIMs or carriers and iMessage activation has not completed.
- Your phone number or Apple Account address is not selected correctly in Send & Receive.
- The conversation is addressed to an email address rather than the intended phone number, creating a separate thread.
- A group includes someone who is not participating through iMessage.
- RCS is available for the account and carrier, so the message uses RCS while remaining green.
Apple lists device type, disabled iMessage, temporary availability problems and new-device settings as reasons messages may appear green. A green bubble alone is not evidence that someone blocked you.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Why one conversation can contain both colors
The color describes the transport selected for each message, not a permanent label attached to a contact. A thread can be blue while iMessage is reachable and green during a temporary service or configuration problem. A phone-number or email-address change can also create separate threads.
Group chats are especially easy to misread. Apple says a group remains an iMessage group only when all participants use Apple devices with iMessage enabled. If one participant is not using iMessage, the group may use MMS, SMS or RCS and appear green. See Apple’s group-message guidance for the distinctions.
How to get blue bubbles back when possible
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Messages.
- Turn on iMessage.
- Tap Send & Receive.
- Confirm that the correct phone number is selected for receiving and replying.
- Under the option for starting new conversations, choose the phone number or Apple Account address you intend to use.
On earlier iOS releases, Messages may appear directly in the main Settings list rather than under Apps. Enabling iMessage cannot turn a non-iMessage recipient or a mixed-service group blue; it only lets eligible conversations use iMessage when the service is available. Apple’s green-message instructions show the current settings path.

What RCS changes on an iPhone
RCS is a newer carrier messaging standard supported on iPhone from iOS 18 onward when the carrier, region, plan and account support it. It remains green because it is not iMessage. To check it, go to Settings > Apps > Messages > RCS Messaging.
If RCS Messaging is missing, Apple says the feature may not be available for your carrier, region or account. Activation can also take time, including several hours. RCS can be considerably richer than SMS or MMS, but availability and features vary.
Do not treat all green messages as having the same privacy. Traditional SMS and MMS are not end-to-end encrypted. Apple describes end-to-end encrypted RCS as a beta feature in iOS 26.5 for supported carriers, rolling out over time; encryption therefore depends on software, carrier and participant support. See Apple’s RCS requirements and settings.

Troubleshoot an unexpectedly green message
Only one contact is green
- Check whether that contact has iMessage enabled and whether the correct number is selected in their Send & Receive settings.
- Confirm you are messaging the right phone number rather than an old number or Apple Account address.
- Consider a temporary iMessage outage or a manually selected carrier-message option.
Every conversation is green
- Verify iMessage is on and your phone number is activated.
- Check Wi-Fi or cellular data, then restart the iPhone.
- Install available iOS updates and allow time for activation after a phone, SIM or carrier change.
- Ask the carrier to confirm SMS, MMS and RCS support if carrier messages also fail.
A message shows a red exclamation mark
- Check your network connection.
- Tap the red exclamation mark and try again.
- Use Send as Text Message only if you accept carrier messaging and any applicable plan limits or charges.
To enable automatic fallback, open Settings > Apps > Messages and turn on Send as Text Message. This sends through the carrier, appears green and does not preserve iMessage features or its encryption.

You recently switched from iPhone to Android
Your number may still be registered with iMessage, so Apple devices can continue trying the iMessage route. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance directs people in this situation to deactivate iMessage; follow the current instructions at Apple’s send-and-receive troubleshooting page.
Does green mean worse, costlier or less private?
Not automatically. iMessage uses data, so cellular-data charges can depend on your plan. SMS and MMS use carrier messaging and may be subject to plan limits or fees. RCS is also carrier-provided, with availability and terms set by the carrier.

Feature and privacy differences depend on the green protocol:
- iMessage: Apple features and end-to-end encryption between supported participants.
- RCS: Modern delivery indicators and media features where supported, but encryption is not universal.
- SMS/MMS: Broad carrier compatibility, fewer features and no end-to-end encryption.
Common misconceptions
“Green means Android.”
Android is one common reason, but green can also mean RCS, SMS, MMS, disabled or unavailable iMessage, a setup problem or a mixed group.
“Blue means Wi-Fi.”
Blue means iMessage. iMessage can use cellular data as well as Wi-Fi.

“Green means I was blocked.”
Color alone cannot establish blocking. It only shows that this message did not use iMessage.
“Every green message is SMS.”
On current iOS, green may be RCS, SMS or MMS. The bubble has no separate color for each protocol.
“Green means the message failed.”
A green message can be delivered normally. Delivery failure is indicated separately, such as by a red exclamation mark.

The Bottom Line
Read the color as a service indicator: blue is iMessage; green is RCS, SMS or MMS. Check iMessage activation, Send & Receive, connectivity and carrier support when an eligible iPhone conversation unexpectedly turns green.
