Many original PlayStation game discs have a distinctive dark-looking underside, but the available official sources do not establish why Sony chose that color. In particular, they do not show that the dark surface itself was the copy-protection mechanism. Sony did use copy-protection information on production discs; that is a separate, documented fact.
What looks black on a PS1 game disc?
The dark appearance is on the underside of many original PlayStation game CDs. It is a recognizable feature, but the sources available do not establish that every licensed disc, region, or reprint has it. Color alone is therefore not a reliable authenticity test.

Why did Sony use CD-ROM for PlayStation games?
Sony’s official PlayStation history says games used the CD-ROM format. Compared with cartridges, CDs offered more room for game content; Sony also says the format let games be manufactured faster and more affordably for players. PlayStation’s official history timeline

Was the black color copy protection?
That explanation is often repeated, but the evidence here does not establish it. A technical exhibit hosted by the USPTO describes PlayStation discs as CD-ROM XA and says Sony added copy-protection information to production discs. These are distinct properties: a production disc could have encoded copy-protection information and also have a dark-looking underside. The technical description supports the former, not a causal link between the protection and the color.

Does a black underside prove a PS1 disc is genuine?
No. The sources do not show that every authentic disc has the same appearance, nor that color alone can establish authenticity. Treat the dark underside as a familiar visual characteristic, not proof of origin; the available evidence does not support using it to verify a disc.

So why are PS1 games black?
The precise reason for the dark coloration remains unresolved in the official materials cited here. The sound conclusion is limited: many original PlayStation discs look dark underneath; Sony chose CD-ROM for documented capacity and production advantages; and Sony’s production discs included copy-protection information. The sources do not connect the color itself to that protection.
